Even though the setting is England and the staging and costumes can be authentic period English, the story is a fantasy which started out as a French romantic ballet, LADY HENRIETTE OF GREENWICH. MARTA recycles some music Flotow originally wrote for LADY HENRIETTE when he was living in France. MARTHA was always traditionally staged with singers in English costumes blocked in the visual style of a French romantic ballet.

Popularised by Enrico Caruso, this aria, aka m'appari, is actually better known and more often sung in Italian than in the German version. As the story of Martha takes place in England, this performance was in England and the character who sings it is an English Lord it makes perfect sense for him to sing in English. N'est pas?
