When I was a baby our Alaskan Malamute, Conan, would lay by my crib while I was napping. If I so much as cried, pooped, farted, anything, Conan would rush out like it was the end of the world and freak out until my parents came to see what was wrong, but then he wouldn't get out of the way. He was such a funny, loving dog, I miss him so much :'(
My family used to have a GS/mutt mix named Jack. It was a fierce guard dog of the house and surrounding yard but when it got old it became mean and senile. I liked that dog but I can remember a few occasions when it tried to attack my siblings. Eventually it had to be put down.
My white GSD would kill someone if they even tried to hit or attack me. She saved me from getting robbed by a street gang one night. 15 of them surrounded me and told me to drop my wallet and jewelry, but then Luna snapped and went nuts on them and they ran. I was worried they would try to steal Luna, but she brought justice to them punks.
One evening my 4 yr old son and I were walking around the block. A woman was walking her German Shepherd. We were walking fast and had caught up to them. We were on the sidewalk and they were on the street. I started walking quite a bit ahead of my son. My son stopped. The german shepherd stopped. Her name was Annie. Annie would not continue until my 4 year old continued. Something about that really stuck with me. Her owner said she was waiting for him to go. Thought that was awesome.
We adopted a 6 year old white GSD last month. He's amazing with my kids, my cats, and my Pit Bull. But he will chase the cats away from the kids, lol.
aww i had a dog who protected me when i was a kid. and to those that think this is wrong my dog died to save my life, so if you think it is wrong i m very sorry for you
i used to own a GSD, we spoiled the dog rotten, but somehow the dog was mean everyone else. it was our responsibility as dog owners to make sure he did not hurt anyone, and not to llow him to get free for even jsut one moment. we finally gave the dog to a farm owner, who never had one lick of trouble from him (we checked), he just didnt like his living surroundings. once he had room to move, he fell in love with the family and everyone else, including other animals.
I grew up with a GSD and have one now as an adult. They are AWESOME with children. We were so safe as kids in the front yard with ours, and now my children have the same thing. He watches intently and never moves or leaves unless they are out of his site.
my two GSDs wouldn't allow my niece to learn how to walk....when she would pull herself up they would head-butt he back down and make her crawl in a circle...
My Male GSD LOGAN looks just like AVA.....he is 7 years of age, but has early disc disease...heartbreaking.If he goes before I do...well. Logan has a long ancestry...many generations. The right GSD is magical.
i would like a german shepard. when im older. xd ill get one as a baby so i can care for it and it will be nice when its older 2 years before we get a baby or something then he can gaurd her :o
GSD's aren't mean, but it's in their DNA to 'guard and protect' their people, property, space, whatever. If you come near what they are guarding, they will warn you off. They don't need to be trained to do this. It's natural. That's why they need to be well socialized with other dogs and people when they are puppies. Otherwise, you have a dangerous dog who will get in trouble doing what comes natural due to bad owners.
funny thing is, when dogs just became humans best friend, prehistoric people use to leave there children with wolves when hunting because they know the wolf would protect them against any threat, and the wolves knew there would be a reward for them if they did so.
@XcontritionsXXX awwww thats adorable :) lol i have to agree that GSD's are the best guard dogs ever. thats why when i own my own house i;m getting a german shepard
My mother told me that when i was little she would babysit other children and when the parents would come pick them up they couldnt walk over and grab their child or my GSD would have gone after then. My mom would have to let him know the person was okay or my dog wouldnt stop for anything. I think its so cute how pertective they can get.
lol I love shepherds. Had two, we're down to one right now. my female got old. best dogs. Love them to death. And irresponsible owners are definitely the problem. Hence the Pitbull issues. Amazing dogs but in the hands of morons... even a chihuahua can be deadly.
no wonder your baby sneezed, I could almost see how pieces of dogs' hair are flying in the room and your baby breathing them in! Don't get me wrong, I love pets but long coated animals must live outside. it takes for a dog to wave it's tail one time, and its hair is everywhere in the air, even those tiny hair that you cant see but can feel once they get in your nose.

I don't like all these movies with dogs near babies.I don't know if it's good to expose a babies fragile immunitary system to a dog, even if it has all his vaccines. My vet also said he doesn't agree with all the people who let their dogs lick their faces all the time.
@VladChe Actually,it is BETTER for children to be raised around animals b/c it makes their immune system STRONGER by introducing them to dander/hair/pollen/etc Children raised w/ animals have been studied to be less sick than those in a sterile living area & your Vet doesn't like pets licking faces b/c there is a RARE chance they might have a parasite that can be passed to humans Also human/animal vaccinations have nothing to do w/ each other & they aren't even for the same diseases.
German Shepards are excelent with children. We had a half german shepard half black lab and she was exelecnt with children. But she died yesturday because of cancer and she was the best dog we've ever had
@stingraybch Up to this day I still cry about it. But Harry makes me feel better(her son). There isnt a day that I don't think about my Anastasia i'm just glad I wuz there for her final hours and that she didnt die alone. She died knowing she was very loved by every1.
@doagirl I have a german Shep/ Black lab as well! My two year old nephew LOVES my puppy. Even though My pup is rumbuncious at times, he never hurts my nephew. And the tolerence he has for a little kid is unbelievable. P.S. I am deeply sorry for your loss. Dogs are like your children, it's hard, I know. I had a dog that was an amazing guard dog that followed me everywhere I went, he was like a brother to me. We had to put him down a couple months ago. So I know exactly how it is:(
The breed is also known as GSD because of the literal German translation. People don't use it to look "smart", they use it because it's short and correct.
"GSD" identifies that you're speaking about the dog and not necessarily about a person who owns livestock. Thanks for the intelligence update Mariussixtysix....
I had a bad experiance with a GSD 7 or 8 years ago, but I never hated them. I hated the owners. They were the ones who taught it to be mean. A GSD attacked me and my 2 year old yellow lab mix and chased us and went after my puppy. Thankfully we got back to my house with just a small bite on my puppy's ear, nothing major. It wasn't the dog's fault it was mean, it was the owners. Apparently, the owners beat it and just made it mean. That is the only time a GSD ever attacked me.
My aunt and uncle actually own a GSD and we get along amazingly, it is so sweet! It will eat parfait right out of your hand. And yes, they feed it McDonald's parfaits.
@jkirk1626 true, people who say that german shepherds are dangerous forget to look that owners usually are at fault because of irresponsibility and improper handling, my grandma has a GSD when i visit and it has never acted agressive to me nor bitten me ever
@TheBeserkian an owner doesnt have to abuse a dog for it to be aggressive towards another dog, my GSD was raised on a farm as the only dog and we moved to the city when he was 6, he hates ANY dogs and men in uniforms, yet, he is the most loving animal EVER with our family, he was never BEAT. but whatever you people think that dogs cant bite unless taught or abused, you're insane.
@TheBeserkian I'm sorry to hear that. I don't approve of dogs being hit. It's just like when they spank a child but worse because a child eventually becomes insolent towards its parent while a dog will always love its own no matter how many times it is beaten.
@TheBeserkian my uncle was deliveryed pizzas and this bastard owner had 2 1 year old husky gsd mixes in a fucking cat cage so he rescued them and gave them to us sadly 1 died not that long after we got her because she still wasn't gaining as much weight as she wanted because she was young and we got her skinny and she was shot by a hunter who though it was a coyote and other 1 (had puppies which 1 of them was kinda dumb but loving) died 2 years ago but pitbulls can be good if u raise them well
@tallicAgrl9051 Oh Lord, that took place around... 8, 9 years ago? Something like that. The people who owned the dog moved out a month after the incident.
that doesnt make me anything because I'm not the one suggesting that the above mentioned incident be reported. I get it your a real softie. cant stand up for yourself so you'll just call pet care or someone.PUSSY!
@candydude235 yea sure, calling strangers names on youtube makes you a real TOUGHIE big boy.
There are different ways of solving things and i would take various approaches towards various situations. oh i've stood up for even stray animals before. what makes you think you KNOW me so well to make comments like that?
@TheBeserkian I got attacked by a deranged gsd when I was 11. It was old and had dementia I believe. Took a chunk out of my leg. now, 11 years later, I own 2 and will never have another breed. Irony.
I don't get why GSDs have such a bad rep for being around kids. ANY dog can be aggressive and bite... Sheps are no more likely to than any other dog. In my personal opinion I would never let a kid around a cocket spaniel. I've been bitten twice by them but never by a GSD (mine or others)
That's so weird, Ive actually never heard of German Shepards being bad with kids...All the ones I've known and heard about have always been very good with kids, and protective of them. Still, its all in the training.
I'm not going to say there's such a thing as a bad dog or a good dog, but I do think that some are more aggressive than others. There's a few breeds I definitely wouldn't trust around a child. The German Shepherd is definitely not one of them. These are the perfect family dogs. I have never seen a more loyal companion. It's a shame that people don't possess some of the traits these dogs have.
@denergy94063 what the fuck would that accomplish? you were a baby yourself once...if someone did that to you when you were a baby you most likely wouldn't be here dumbass...cant believe someone would think that way -.-
our old shepherd did that for me and my sis even when we were out in public in the pram, he was police trained though and had to approve of anyone before they were even allowed within 2 feet us, was sooo cute
dogs can be very protective of human children. my sister's baby was on the bed when the cat came running in the room, and her dog (a terrier) ran over and put his front paws over the baby (not on top of it) and "hid" it from the cat.
german shepherds are my fave! :) according to dogs 101 on animal planet, dobermans are better guards than german shepherds :) im glad we have a doberman back at home but I would love to have both :) german shepherds are just the best but i love my dobie just as much :)
I wonder who is the best guard? I haven't heard of it on that show
thats a great shepherd, german shepherds are really the best!, i have 9 german shepherds and when someone tries to hit me (play hit) they'll attack but won't bite cuz tey know the person but when a guy try to hurt for real they'll definetely attack no backing up
i still wouldn't trust german shepherds around babies,
over protective dogs are just as bad as dog who are curious about babies
My old boxer dog was the right sort of dog to have around children, protective yet didn't seem that way, was even so smart that every night he would check the cot i used to lay in
yea, well how come when my big brother was in the bathroom and the baby was in the living room with the GSD he didn't kill him, and just because ur boxer is protective doesn't shepherds can't
stop acting like your dog's shit doesn't stink... you've obviously never owned a german shepherd. i had one for 13 years, my parents left me alone just about every day but i knew nothing bad would happen because the dog was there. you're dog isn't the only one who checked on you late at night, mine had arthritis but he still struggled to walk across the house to make sure i was alright. Boxers are used as bait dogs also, they don't even attempt to protect their owners.
"just depends what sort of HUMAN BEING is in control"
GSDs don't need their owners present to be good dogs, they do it on their own. with their own free will. sorry that your boxer needs to be told what to do instead of doing it automatically.
well guess what, thats what dogs are now being bred for, human control or pets the age of free thinking dogs may have gone since we hardly use them now for working
lol that fun she cased the cat out of the room

@TheBeserkian raising a shepard is like raising a child you treat it right and it will grow up fine treat it wrong and it wont.

@TheBeserkian my uncle was deliveryed pizzas and this bastard owner had 2 1 year old husky gsd mixes in a fucking cat cage so he rescued them and gave them to us sadly 1 died not that long after we got her because she still wasn't gaining as much weight as she wanted because she was young and we got her skinny and she was shot by a hunter who though it was a coyote and other 1 (had puppies which 1 of them was kinda dumb but loving) died 2 years ago but pitbulls can be good if u raise them well
kookieless 10 months ago
@TheBeserkian you should report the beating.
tallicAgrl9051 10 months ago
@tallicAgrl9051 Oh Lord, that took place around... 8, 9 years ago? Something like that. The people who owned the dog moved out a month after the incident.
TheBeserkian 10 months ago
@TheBeserkian oh that's too bad... :( i would've reported...

@tallicAgrl9051
that doesnt make me anything because I'm not the one suggesting that the above mentioned incident be reported. I get it your a real softie. cant stand up for yourself so you'll just call pet care or someone.PUSSY!
candydude235 9 months ago
@candydude235 yea sure, calling strangers names on youtube makes you a real TOUGHIE big boy.
There are different ways of solving things and i would take various approaches towards various situations. oh i've stood up for even stray animals before. what makes you think you KNOW me so well to make comments like that?

Got to hate aholes like that....Too bad there are too many.

@TheBeserkian I got attacked by a deranged gsd when I was 11. It was old and had dementia I believe. Took a chunk out of my leg. now, 11 years later, I own 2 and will never have another breed. Irony.
ElliottDenney 8 months ago 2
@ElliottDenney You will never in your life have a better dog than a GSD. They are the best period.
DogsBestFriend4Life 7 months ago 2
I don't get why GSDs have such a bad rep for being around kids. ANY dog can be aggressive and bite... Sheps are no more likely to than any other dog. In my personal opinion I would never let a kid around a cocket spaniel. I've been bitten twice by them but never by a GSD (mine or others)
k4ch3ll4 2 years ago 6
That's so weird, Ive actually never heard of German Shepards being bad with kids...All the ones I've known and heard about have always been very good with kids, and protective of them. Still, its all in the training.

@brightasblackout hey it all depends how they are brought up and trained when they are young!

I thought German Shepherds where good with kids. that is why we got Luci.
szarrok 2 years ago
I'm not going to say there's such a thing as a bad dog or a good dog, but I do think that some are more aggressive than others. There's a few breeds I definitely wouldn't trust around a child. The German Shepherd is definitely not one of them. These are the perfect family dogs. I have never seen a more loyal companion. It's a shame that people don't possess some of the traits these dogs have.

Watching the GSD, gives the same impression as when you see the Secret Service protecting the President.

Many dogs treat the baby as part of the flock and feel its their duty to protect them just like any other defenseless cub. :)

dogs can be very protective of human children. my sister's baby was on the bed when the cat came running in the room, and her dog (a terrier) ran over and put his front paws over the baby (not on top of it) and "hid" it from the cat.

german shepherds are my fave! :) according to dogs 101 on animal planet, dobermans are better guards than german shepherds :) im glad we have a doberman back at home but I would love to have both :) german shepherds are just the best but i love my dobie just as much :)
I wonder who is the best guard? I haven't heard of it on that show
PettoPrincess88 3 years ago 2
Yea GSD are prolly the most diverse dogs you will find. They are fast, strong bite force, very smart, very loyal, protective, cunning.

there will always be dispute about which dog is the best guardian, but a lot of ppl say its Cane Corso

thats a great shepherd, german shepherds are really the best!, i have 9 german shepherds and when someone tries to hit me (play hit) they'll attack but won't bite cuz tey know the person but when a guy try to hurt for real they'll definetely attack no backing up
animalrights800 3 years ago
i still wouldn't trust german shepherds around babies,
over protective dogs are just as bad as dog who are curious about babies
My old boxer dog was the right sort of dog to have around children, protective yet didn't seem that way, was even so smart that every night he would check the cot i used to lay in
Galacticmaster 3 years ago
yea, well how come when my big brother was in the bathroom and the baby was in the living room with the GSD he didn't kill him, and just because ur boxer is protective doesn't shepherds can't
animalrights800 3 years ago
stop acting like your dog's shit doesn't stink... you've obviously never owned a german shepherd. i had one for 13 years, my parents left me alone just about every day but i knew nothing bad would happen because the dog was there. you're dog isn't the only one who checked on you late at night, mine had arthritis but he still struggled to walk across the house to make sure i was alright. Boxers are used as bait dogs also, they don't even attempt to protect their owners.
candycane27 3 years ago
boxers do protect owners, just depends what sort of HUMAN BEING is in control
Galacticmaster 3 years ago 3
"just depends what sort of HUMAN BEING is in control"
GSDs don't need their owners present to be good dogs, they do it on their own. with their own free will. sorry that your boxer needs to be told what to do instead of doing it automatically.
candycane27 3 years ago 2
well guess what, thats what dogs are now being bred for, human control or pets the age of free thinking dogs may have gone since we hardly use them now for working
Galacticmaster 3 years ago
no sorry but gsd would be better then a boxer gds are simply bread to proctect
frankieoldboy 3 years ago 3
your opinion,
but i was protected by a boxer at all times
