only part I like is when he eats and eats ... trys different food.. only food bit I like to watch of his travels... nothing mo... to watch how he eats, etc...
I am Mexican and i have Malaysian friends, and i think we share many things about culture and the way of enjoying the life, family and sharing is the most important thing for us and i think Anthony really enjoyed this program just like he enjoyed the Mexican program, of course in both countries he had really good guides and met amazing people. That is the most important thing. Viva la raza, Mexico y Malasia!
The worst one is the trip to Romania with the RUSSIAN (!!) guide- very difficult to watch as he knew only Romania "has Vampires". The trip to Philippines is cool if you haven't seen it...
saw the philippine one but was not impressed by it. maybe because i'm filipino, i held it at a higher standard. there are much to be desired but was not included. mmmm
I do agree with you, especially the guide he had was a little strange! He had a series of good people here in Malaysia... P.S. Since I love Philippines as well, what would you have included in that show??
the filipino guide didn't have a clue of his own filipino culture. bourdain was hard pressed to tie filipino food and culture, his guid was unable to give him that. bourdain is a man who looks for a common thread by which he could tie food & culture, it was agonizing to hear bourdain over and over trying to eke out from that guy what he thinks of the filipino culture. he was energized to begin but deflated when called to act.
EXCELLENT comment, I saw he had a very strong and persuasive video that he sent in, then became distant and had virtually lost his mind. I bet me and you would make good guides for Mr. Bourdain!!
lol. thanks for the vote of confidence but i don't think i'll be a good tour guide for bourdain. bourdain gets a little on the softy sometimes, melodramatic in his diction. but i guess that's what people like from him. also, i'll be a little biased in showing him around in my side, the filipino spicy foods. yum.
after malaysia, i like (2nd in my personal list of favs) bourdain's trip to quebec. the french-canadian chef who cooked all those dishes one right after another was freaking awesome.
I spent almost 2 years on the Quebec border when I was first in the Army, we used to go on weekends to Gatineau Quebec for Poutine, etc... amazing cuisine tradition there by the way!!
I agree with you bro.. and the guy that they got is a complete stranger to his country and culture.... but anthony had the best pig ever....................
Glad that he shows to the world about Sarawak and the jungle that he went to is damn awesome to travel btw...There's more great location of food in Sarawak...Hope that next time he wanna visit malaysia again,he will cover all of Malaysia interesting states that have great food to enjoy...hehehe...Ooo-haaaaa(meaning cheers in Iban)..
He went to Egypt without wanna to go pyramid... So, he is somewhat special and I think he was looking for something original in Malaysia; not famous tourist destinations like Penang, Malacca and Perak. He went to a 'hard to find' place to eat chinese food..see. Also, he had visited China and tried their best cuisine there. But, one thing is true; he should at least try cendol of the street hawker and chicken rice balls at a tiny shop in Malacca; whose businesses have survived for generations.
That's bullshit, There are other places. Penang is overrated. I've been there many times. Also been through the east and west coast of the peninsular and lived in Kl for years. I now live in Sarawak and am shocked to discover how ignorant i have been about this beautiful and most interesting part of malaysia both culturally and foodwise. Please wipe out your ignorance and open your deluded mind!
Sarawak kicks ass, the malaysian culture there still remains strong and authentic. Peninsular malaysia is very watered down and culturally boring in comparison. I'm sorry kid.
Yes. He was stranded in Malaysia for three years. He was just reintroduced to the first world three months ago. He's currently serving at Chino for kill hundreds of pigs.
Living in malaysia, you would have a srong feeling like "Why am I so unlucky to be an asian ...too bad". And if u could speak a gud english, then u would pretend you're u "Hi-Class", I mean "Fat ass" , anyhow, if you had ever been studied oversea, tht's the worse !! You could juz runing away from Malaysia ....
well, shah rukh khan who casted one of his film in malaysia received 'datukship' for promoting malaysia to the world (or maybe just hindustan cinemas). I think anthony deserved it more than shah rukh khan.
u couldn't be more right man..I never really knew much about the Iban culture and this show was really informative..even as Malaysians I think we really understand everything about our country..two thumbs up Bourdain!..
I like how this episode focuses on the native people of Malaysia which not many has seen. I do think that Anthony Bourdain needs to have a sequel to this. Malaysia is a very complex country with each state having variances in food & culture. For example, the laksa in Sarawak is very different from the laksa in Penang or Johor. Originally am from Penang, live in KL for a while and I has seen/stayed in the rural areas. The experience is absolutely breathtaking.
There is always moments of filled and hollow for everyone to experience and I realy don't think He belongs in New York, personaly I think He just belongs traveling period, think that's what He truly loves.
I wouldn't want to go back to a City either when being there, hell noooooooo, maybe not stay there but at least keep going and travel some more.
Because of idiots like diz ppl tink malysia is a jungle, he goes 2 the oldest traditional village and shows it to the world. aND PPL get diz kind of impression of my country. But we are modernized an dlive in city and got one of the biggest buildin in the world . so fuck u Anthony
malaysia is both modern and rural. I don't see what's wrong with antony showing everyone the more rural side of malaysia. Please think carefully before you post more ignorant messages.
You're so worried about what people think of our country yet you had less than half the mind to type and form sentences in a decent manner? Did you even see the first two parts of this episode? It's morons like you who give our country a bad rep.
That's because you're a 13 year old trust fund baby who's never worked a day in your life waiting to be whisked away into some foreign land by some (preferably white) prince on a mighty steed. At least own up on your brother's behalf. And like I said, try and type in a decent manner.
And yes, if you absolutely have to choose something to hate about your country, hate the people who runs it by lining their pockets with gold and turn a blind eye on the real problems facing its people, problems you've never experienced is my guess. Cause you're too busy worrying about "why won'ts dis boy lieksz me?" or "IWants to beez a suparstarrsss!"

I would NEVER EVER kill a pig just because this the cultural tradition of my hosts; there is a limit in how far I'd go. I could tell he was disturbed by it too.
His comments at the end, where he says, "I don't feel I belong here, but I'm not sure I belong back in New York either," . . maybe that's what happens after you've traveled someplace and bonded there. Since you can't be both places, you're never completely whole anymore.
He forgot to mention that the Iban are Evangelical Christians and that's why they don't practice headhunting anymore.
