I don't think you're supposed to shoot the actual metal lock because of the possible ricochet. Your supposed to shoot at the wood part of the door where the door meets the frame at the lock. The fragments explode the inside lock out.

you guys got ripped off! you dont see these doors outside of homes, (which is the primary reason for a door breach to be executed). If you didn't have an industrial door, and you didn't have access to "hatton" plastic slug projectiles you guys just wasted time. good day sirs...
Ripped off? Ripped off how? We were trained by a SWAT team member and police officer from New Jersey. He's our friend and didn't charge us a dime. We got the doors from the junk yard because they were free. My father-in-law runs the range where we did the drills. The entire day was the cost of ammo and the pizza we had for lunch. Any time spent on the range is not what I would consider time wasted. Oh, and good day to you too.
The question was already answered in the comments... "Buckshot and birdshot... we also tried slugs. We were all pretty surprised at how well the birdshot performed compared to the other two."
Looks fun. I have an 870 that has a breacher barrel and I've actaully been meaning to try this. Its little surpirse that birdshot is the most effective. 1.125oz of #9 shot moving at 1550FPS is no joke and at these distances its hitting as one mass, basically duplicating the effects of frangible slug breaching round. With such small shot, and a standoff device you'd have very little spalling
In such a situation overpenetration is also not a concern. You make that kind of entry you better shoot to kill cause the guy on the other side will be.
Even a 180+ gr. round from a 30-06 round does not have enough mass to reliably break apart the locking mechanism, the door bolt, or the frame of the door. Frangible shotgun slugs and frangible buckshot do an excellent job because they are extremely heavy and they pose the least risk to anyone. Non-frangible rounds can pose a large threat to the shooter if something like a padlock needs to be busted.
Not all doors have dead bolts. If 30 caliber, or larger, rifle bullet is what works best, then entry teams would be using them. They are not. They aren't as reliable or safe as a frangible door-breaching shotgun round.
people breach doors with shotguns not rifles because shotguns can also fire special door busting rounds which is a solid wall of powder. no bounce, all bust
Must be careful with slugs or other non-frangible rounds when breeching. Birdshot is not as dangerous, but buck shot and slugs can ricochet and hurt someone.

So your not supposed to shoot the upper lock, only the handle? I guess It shouldn't concern me I don't have rounds safe enough to do this.
DaOneAndOnly3 2 years ago
Each person only got to shoot one lock or doorknob because we didn't have enough for everyone to each shoot both.
Sloppopotamus 2 years ago
Oh thanks for the reply, so I assume in a non training environment you would have probably shot both. I understand well great video thank you.

maybe u should try the .50 cal

fascinating! Ive seen "compressed copper slugs" advertised for the purpose. Tried them?

amazing what a shotty will do to a door,.... AND it's amazing what a bit of foam over a microphone can do for wind noise ... lol
TapOutSnap 3 years ago
Haha! Yeah... I'm actually filming this with my still camera, so the wind noise is really irritating. :-)

isn't it dangerous to shoot from such a short distance? I mean the bullets could "jump" back to the shooter?

Just use a 30-06 and shoot it straight on.
Sorry, never a fan of shotguns.

Try it.
My 30-06 blows the entire deadbolt through the door and 20 yards away with 150gr fmj
impact energy is a function of mass and velocity, not just mass.
Anubis78250 3 years ago

hafetysazard 3 years ago
yeah ... no the reason they don't use them is because they don't carry rifles in those situations.
I'm not saying a 30-06 is better for these situations.
I'm saying it does a better job of blasting a lock than a shotgun slug.
Anubis78250 3 years ago
It is possible, but it seems that frangible slugs, and the like, do a far more reliable job at busting locks and doors open than rifle bullets could.
hafetysazard 3 years ago
