if there is a siren from a fire truck or ambulance or police car, the deaf people cannot hear that, and that is a serious safety issue. Where I live, those emergency vehicles are often coming through traffic. And the deaf cannot hear car horns. I had the impression deaf people were not allowed to drive anywhere, but I guess I was misinformed about that. . Seems like a serious safety issue

You have false information about Japanese deaf are not allowed to drive. I went to Japan and met deaf Japanese people. they have drive licenses to can drive. I rode my deaf good Japanese friends who drive her/his cars.

the problem with deaf people driving is when they're talking with someone else. it's hard for a deaf person to watch someone sign and watch the road at the same time. I heard they're known for kind of swerving around the road at these times.

of course, young people are the ones with the highest risk of crashing, but I just wanted to put that out there.

I cannot imagine why countries not allow deaf drivers. We deaf American allow to drive. No matter what. We all do the same as hearing people do. We go to work and take kids to school. China, Jamaca, Japan and few other countries still not allow to drive but some area have changed now. That is good news but bad news some are still around. Its sad.

yeah, I heard in two years ago. I went to Japan for five times. In 2001, I went to Tokyo with my Deafies friends for driving. My Deaf friend can drive his car.. right now, I am not sure if Japanese Government dont allow deaf people to drive right now, I will ask my Deaf japanese friend real sooner. smile

Japanese driving law was already changed in 2008, letting deaf people to drive with a wider mirrors and a speacial deaf sign on the car.
