Wow...you know. I grew up watching vhs tapes of Little Audrey and I have never paid attention to the Mammy character & the licorice. Its a true testament to the time, a sad part of our history, but I still love this cartoon. I was just singing "The tummy ache blues" out of nowhere and thought Id look it up. Funny how my adult eyes can see those things now....smh
I thought the Mammy character was racist, sorry. I also thought the licorice heads lampooned blacks. While lampooning the Mammy character as an Aunt Jemima stereotype, the cartoon is still funny. I just didn't like the racism, sorry.
I had this cartoon when I was little and loved it. I didn't think anything of the mammy character cause I didn't associate her with myself. When your a kid you know that people are different but you don't really understand. So yes I might be black but this character wasn't anything like me or anyone I knew because she wasn't real. Maybe to adults it had a darker meaning but when your a child you don't look at things beyond the surface.
@purplekitty i also saw this cartoon as a child and what impressed me the most was "The Tummy Ache Blues" song. Like you, I didn't find anything offensive about the mammy character and i definitely did not associate her with myself, my mother or any of my family/ friends. Unfortunately, now that i am a very grown-up 52 yr. old man, the racist stereotype depicted by the character is so obvious and quite offensive. Racism STINKS!!!
If it hasn't been written about before: the cord with the bags of candy hanging outside Audrey's window is a direct reference to "The Lost Weekend" with whiskey bottles instead of sweets. There, Ray Milland has to dry out from binge-drinking much the way Audrey has to get over candy munching.
I just checked out Wikipedia for some info about this mammy and i was linked to tom and jerrys page where the mammy in they're series is called "Mammy two Shoes". This Mammy in the little audrey cartoon seems to be called "Blackface". people are right it is highly racist but it is a cartoon so i wouldnt care pretty much.
Your right and things like this did happen around them times so this cartoon is only telling the truth. there was mammys which are something like? Maids? im not quite sure...
@Uncutcartoons247 Actually its from the 1940s and racism doesn't have an expiration date. From the beginning to present day, its just alive today as it was back thousands of years ago...
@kisa154 I thought the same thing. But at the same time, I loved this cartoon as a child and I didn't think of it in that light when I was little. Therefore, I think for most people, they don't see is that way because it takes them back to childhood and they remember it the way they did then. But I do see your point. It is totally racist. But it does take me back to fond memories.
@bloodshedhexer This is a "normal black person from 1950"?! Where were you in 1950? I doubt it was funny to everyone back then. Did you also speak to everyone in 1950? I was directed here by an article entitled Branding the Black Woman. You should read it and open your mind.
You are an ignorant commenter. Go rot with the other morons of society, loser scumbag. Black is black is black. So suck on that blackness, b-otch! Booyah! There, that's a better reaction, right? Fuck intelligence, let's just get all stupid up in here. Up in HERE!

OMG I used to love this cartoon when I was a kid! I didn't realize though that "Mammy" was just the creators making fun of us black people. Takes all the fun out of watching it now :/
@Applestix414 Are you kidding?? I too am black, and you know, my mother and I got a HUGE kick out of the Mammy character. She's an honest, wise, motherly character...what isn't to love about her? :) "Eatin' candy 48 hours a day..." She reminds me sooo much of my best friend's mom!!
You gotta let some things go. Few cartoons got very far without stinging one group or another! And this is tame compared to some other stuff.
@meowkie I'd have to agree with Applestix If EVERYTHING in the cartoon was drawn the same way, that would be one thing, but the whole "looks barely human with HUGE white lips and of course is extremely overweight" portrayal of the maid is gratuitous...
@shmuli9 Oh, hun, the portrayal is EXTREMELY obvious. I'm not denying that they went out of their way to illustrate her as the stereotypical black person, but that's just the way it was back then. And back then, it was probably more of a shame than it is now. However, now that we've accepted that times have changed, I think it's alright to look back on things like this and shrug our shoulders. It's not like they burned a cross on her yard! :) Have a good one.
@meowkie Things have changed (for the better, I hope, though it seems like perhaps the pendulum has swung too much the OTHER way), but there are certain other things that are peculiar, to say the least...
@shmuli9 The only way the pendelum is going to freeze at a happy medium is if people accept the past, accept their own actions, calm down, and enjoy the show. :)
@meowkie Indeed... White people need to stop thinking (subconsciously, OF COURSE) that they are better than the other 4/5 of the world's population, and everyone else, assuming they're in countries where they are "minorities", need to stop thinking that every time they didn't get a job/were informed that their shoes were untied/whatever is only "because they're not white". A jerk can be a jerk, and a nice person can be a nice person, regardless of race...
jesus i love this show and little lulu and crashbox why cant they put the good shows back on the ones that teach you lessons and they should cancel all that stupid stuff.... and why is the maid telling her what to do is she like the nanny also
Wow!!! I haven't seen this video since I was prob 7 or 8 and now 29!!!! I remember it like it was yesterday, funny how you can remember certain things so clear! I am a little sad right now, good ole days!
Lillian Randolph and Hattie McDaniel were in Hollywood when this was filmed in New York; "Petunia"'s voice [that's the name of the maid; she also appeared in some of the Audrey comic book stories published by St. John at the time this was released] was probably Amanda Randolph's (Lillian's sister), as she was appearing at the time on a live DuMont TV situation comedy, "THE GROWING PAYNES", as "Birdie the maid".
Problems with addiction, deception, lying, passive aggressive behavior, racism, hallucinating, greed, skewed perception of reality, gluttony, demented disorder -oh, and too much sodium. SEE..! Nothing has changed since 1948. We as a people are not evolving! Weeee!
I believe the tape I had also had cartoon on it about a cuckoo (sp?) clock bird that wanted to live a normal life like other birds and he ends up with this girl bird that performed in a "club" LOL I can't remember the name of it.
this has always been my favorite little audrey video. I remember always wanting to go to candy land but when I would see then end I wouldn't! I miss having my 100 classic cartoons vhs :(
A few years ago i remember i was sing this song to a friend of mines kid cuz she ate to much candy and she wasn't suppose to. I couldn't for the life of me remember what cartoon i had gotten it from. Then it popped in my head just now and i found it.
It's funny how they make her candy fetish so much like a crack addict. She tears up her room looking for it and then starts hallucinating when she can't find any. Ha ha. This was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid.
LOL at when the dog eats candy at the table and feeds the nutritious food to Audrey, who kneels on the ground and shakes the salt onto whatever gets on the fork and eats it off.
My mom bought me a vhs tape that had 3 episodes of "Little Audrey". This episode being one of them. After watching this episode many times when I was little, I would have nightmares about those candies making me binge a lot of candy... LOL
I remember my parents had found this tape at a yard sale when i was little and me and my sister would watch it. Funny how things stick with you after all these years. You hear this episode and you know it by heart.
I'll still always be laughing out loud over when Audrey rocks her bag of candy, and when the maid took it away saying, "Eatin' candy again instead of food!"
haha i used to have a movie with a bunch of these on it. then i totally forgot about it. then for some reason i thought about it while watching bongwater.
wow I never saw this one before. Little Audrey used to be my favorite and they never played it enough. I loved the cartoons with Mammy. I loved Gone with the Wind too.
lol man i wish little girls could actually learn lessons like that just in their freams. then maybe there wouldnt be as many stuck-up preppy bitches and whores
I remember these Little Audrey cartoons even though I was born like 40 years after they were made. Imagine, kids my age actually watched these horrible racists cartoons and we made it to adulthood without becoming bigoted racists and cross buring members of the KKK. Imagine that.
they were not racist just because a southern black woman had a southern accent so her accent is thick also when you create a cartoon character (mainly when their not the main character) they are drawn with simple or over pronounced features
Wow what old memories this brings back!! I remember my mom buying this movie for me and I would watch it every day! I watched a movie in one of my foundations of education classes that showed how old cartoons were racists and this definitely was. It is still a good cartoon though. It used to make me want candy and it still does!! lol
yea i was also like 4. this was awesome, there were other videos on the same tape...one with a santa or something. He made toys out of junk? but still i cant believe how racial this video really is , lol. gotta love old cartoons
I can't believe I still remember this! I was about three when my mom mom bought me a video of this! There was also something on the video about an anteater; and it's my goal to find that next. haha.
I know the video you're talking about. It had little audrey, the anteater and I think Popey. It was called Cartoon Classics. My grandmother bought it for me from the Home Shopping Club, LOL
This is Mammy Two Shoes. I don't understand why you see her face in this and other Little Audrey cartoons when you don't in her other appearances (excluding the Tom and Jerry cartoon "Saturday Evening Puss").
Who knew that candy could make you act like a crack head? lol

"Honey child, you is alive. Here's all the candy you own."
Audrey: *runs off like, "No! I'm eating food now! I've changed my mind!"
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
Actually, ThirdTime, the maid is saying, here's all the candy you WANT, with a southern accent :-)
Sparkina 2 years ago 2
Thanks for telling. One of the funniest parts I enjoy is when Audrey rocks her candy to sleep just to hide her candy-eating habit.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
I'll still always be laughing out loud over when Audrey rocks her bag of candy, and when the maid took it away saying, "Eatin' candy again instead of food!"
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
Quoting that line, on the other hand, is difficult since it makes me LOL.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
So is the "Now you is gonna stay right in your room till you is ready to eat food" line.

Just because candy is edible doesn't mean it's food, as the housekeeper meant health food.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
Who's voicing the housekeeper? Lillian Randolph or Hattie McDaniel?
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
So now, instead of eating too much sugar, Little Audrey begins eating too much salt. [g]
MoroccoMole 2 years ago
She was adding salt for flavor.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
LOL at when Audrey rocks her candy "to sleep", singing "Rock-A-Bye Baby" to it.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
"I just can't understand a child eating candy at 48 hours a day. It's just candy, candy, candy. That's all---"
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
"Now you is gonna stay right in your room, till you is ready to eat food." Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and always.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
"Little Audrey!"
"Rock-a-bye, baby, on the treetop."
"Eating candy again instead of food! Now you sit right down and eat your lunch, and NO MORE CANDY."
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
"Eeny meeny miney mo. I shall take this here one."
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
Is it Lillian Randolph or Hattie McDaniel doing the Mammy's voice?
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
I love the Mammy. I can't believe she let Audrey put the fork in her mouth after it was in the dog's mouth
Sulla2300 2 years ago
*amused* Well, Audrey didn't know that, and the Mammy decided to punish her.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
dude, for a kid's cartoon this is trippy shit.
videojudge01 2 years ago
Very good point.
ThirdTimeChangedKBA 2 years ago
There is some kind of good point in this. Don't eat too much candy. Or is the moral, "Do not eat candy when you should eat real food"?

Next to Casper and Herman and Katnip Little Audry is my Favorite Harveytoon Character.
CrimsonNineTail 3 years ago
I remember these Little Audrey cartoons even though I was born like 40 years after they were made. Imagine, kids my age actually watched these horrible racists cartoons and we made it to adulthood without becoming bigoted racists and cross buring members of the KKK. Imagine that.
Sulla2300 3 years ago
they were not racist just because a southern black woman had a southern accent so her accent is thick also when you create a cartoon character (mainly when their not the main character) they are drawn with simple or over pronounced features
defiant2u 2 years ago
Wow what old memories this brings back!! I remember my mom buying this movie for me and I would watch it every day! I watched a movie in one of my foundations of education classes that showed how old cartoons were racists and this definitely was. It is still a good cartoon though. It used to make me want candy and it still does!! lol

I know the video you're talking about. It had little audrey, the anteater and I think Popey. It was called Cartoon Classics. My grandmother bought it for me from the Home Shopping Club, LOL

I'm so glad someone knows what I mean; everyone else I talked to thought I either made it up or I was crazy. haha.

This is Mammy Two Shoes. I don't understand why you see her face in this and other Little Audrey cartoons when you don't in her other appearances (excluding the Tom and Jerry cartoon "Saturday Evening Puss").
CDCB 3 years ago
That's not Mammy Two Shoes. She was only in Tom and Jerry cartoons. This is a different, though similar, character. Mammy is definitely funnier.
flashgordon2008 3 years ago
And, besides, Mammy Two Shoes' face was rarely seen.
