  • Those gibson pick-ups seem to be worth it..

  • The Gibson ES-175 is nice, but I don't think I would pay $4,000 for a laminate guitar. I think the Epiphone version is a great option.

  • Nice playing. Awesome tone from the '57s.

  • Thanks! 57s are great pups.

  • I thought this was a Gibson 0.o , i was egnoring the e on the pick guard for a bit xD

  • @legendsveil Looks just like a Gibson. It is no Gibson, but is a fine guitar and unbelievable value for

    $500.

  • @entfred kool ( :

  • Thumbs up for playing Spanish-style licks on an electric guitar.

  • @Chaif15Let Thanks so much!

  • What chord progression are you playing from 0:32 - 0:50?

    I must know!

  • @pguiver - the demo kind of sucks... I don't even remember what I was playing - so long ago....

  • NICE DEMO

  • Fender Champion 600 was used in this video

  • epiphone

  • Does anyone know how a 175 sounds with a Vox AC30?

  • I'll try to do one this weekend.

    With a digi camera.

    Hope it will sound alright.

  • i'd like to hear that audio too. Love these guitars.

  • I've got a Epi ES175 and play her through a Fender blues deluxe reissue.

    Sounds like 50s blues guitar.

    Jump swing stuff.

This guitar is so versatile, you can play anything on it.

I must make a vid some day.

  • @TheAzerty4321 Can you send me a link to an audio EPI ES-175 recording you have done. I don't know anyone who owns this EPI ES-175.

  • Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

  • what amp are you using? clean playing, impressed!

  • champion 600, but I sold it and got a Marshall class 5. The best amp for the

Epi 175 is a Fender Bassman. I got an old one and it really brings out the

"warmth" of the 175. But, the Marshall is good for a portable amp and excels

for getting a plexi sound at much lower volume.

  • I just bought one of these Epi ES-175's.Going to swap the pups to the '57's.I noticed your bridge is spaced close to the bridge PUP.Will the tone be different if I move mine closer? Thanks for the nice vids..

  • not much difference.

  • @zouavefrench The bridge is adjusted in essence from the center of the nut to the center of the bridge (on most jazz guitars like these) is 24.75 inches. Further to make the note at each fret on each string perfect (intonation) you adjust the bridge saddles for each string by turning the small screws on each saddle, toward the neck if the intonation is flat, and the opposite if the intonation is sharp. It takes a little patience, but you will never again out of tune chords low on the neck.

  • well, i was seeking a more likely "similar" playing and sounding hollowbody to my real ES-175, i have an option on either this epi-175 with other pick ups or the ibanez ES-175 lawsuit from the early 80's; both are still cheaper. it would be my backup jazzbox to take around to jams etc and with not much worrying if i ever will get it stolen/broken etc. i wouldn't afford mentally and financially to lose my real gibby ES-175, cuz i love it too much :o)

  • Never got to try out an Ibanez lawsuit model. You should compare the recent

Ibanez hollowbody guitars to the EPI 175. I liked them both, but ended up getting

the EPI 175 partly out of wanting a guitar that looked close to what a real Gibson

175 looks like. But, as far as tone and playability, some of the hollowbody

Ibanez guitars would do the 175 thing quite well (I still would prefer to replace

the pups on any of these models with Gibson pups).

  • @thespiritoflight I have a lovely Ibanez AK95 (that looks like the ES175). As with every Ibanez I've owned (3), I will need to replace the neck pickup. It just doesn't do the job of jazz guitar to my satisfaction, even though it's a mid-priced guitar. The Ibanez is a joy to play, but as we all know, tone is of equal importance. The Epi ES175 in my opinion possesses a superior tone with no after market trickery.

  • hi

very interesting tone! i will be considering getting an EPI-175 as a "back up" guitar for external jams, so i won't hurt my real deal gibby ES-175. thanks for sharing this video!

  • After you get an EP-175, can you tell me what you think of it compared to the

gibson ES-175? My favorite Gibson hollowbody was one of these vintage

soliid wood hollow bodies that cost over 3 grand. Also, there is a reissue Gibson

that is modeled after an old jazz hollowbody (forgot the model no.) that had

one pickup - it was leaning towards more of an acoustic guitar sound (i..e like

    an Eastman jazz guitar).

  • beautiful sound man,how bad does this feed back at high volumes?Because I want one,but I had an epi dot 335 that fed back like crazy.

  • This feeds back way more than a 335, but if you

point the guitar in a direction to minimize feedback, you'll do ok. In other words, I would

not worry about the feedback issue so much.

  • Hi,

    wich amp do you use?

  • This video uses a Fender Champion 600 - recently

replaced with a Marshall Class 5 - highly recommended.

For a little more money, go to ebay and try to find

yourself one of the Phaez amp heads. They are custom built from Canada - I own a 4

watt Phaez amp I lucked out in finding in this area,

so I could try one out. I use the Phaez on gigs with

a cabinet. The Marshall I just haul around for

practice, but it would work in a gig, also. For high

    volume gigs/jam sessions, I have a Marshall 3203.

  • NICE!

  • Hello, where is the best price for Classic 57 Gibson ? ..thanks, good job !!!!!

  • Call Chuck Levins - Wheaton, MD. for best price on

    those Gibson 57s.

  • Sorry for all the questions its just I want to know all this before I get one through the internet....

  • No problem.

  • ok last question promise.

can a bigsby fit without any modification to the body? as in where the bottom strap button is at, is it being held my a plate with two screws on the top and one on the bottom? (Like up side- down triangular form?)

  • Or "soundblock" as some call it.......

  • I am not 100% sure, but I don't think

    it has a sound block.

  • ok thanks its just I cant find this guitar at any shop so I cant check for myself. o yea and how "wide" would you say the guitar is? Is it like a those Ibanez/Gretsch hollow bodys or is it like a Emperor Regent?

  • more like an Emperor Regent. It is a deep hollowbody.

  • does this guitar have that centerblock in the middle? (like gretsch guitars or semi-hollows)

  • omg i love that sound - it's the kind that quentin tarantino always uses when he uses acoustic music in his movies, and it's soooooo gooooooood !!!!!!

  • does yours say custom shop on the back.

I just got one used, and it has custom shop on the back, and there is no epiphone trademark on the pickguard.

  • Yes, says custom shop on back. There is an

    epiphone logo on the pickguard.

  • vergognati

  • changed to Gibson compatible pots

  • Hi! Very nice setup!

What pots are you using? Original ones, or changed them too?

  • much diff between the gibson and epi pickups?

  • neck pup differences dramatic. Not as

much on bridge pups, but I recommend

    using the Gibson pups.

  • nice tone!!!!!

  • Thanks!

  • You got a great sound pal!!!!

  • Thanks!

  • All I will say is you have a nice guitar and you play it like you are proud of it.Nice video.

  • Thanks, JonathanRingo. This 175 (and all EPIs for

that matter) is built indestructable. I can't say enough

good things about the workmanship, though perhaps

some day I will replace the plastic nut. The nut is

cut perfectly though and the guitar shop made it

even better with a few minor file cuts.

  • So, you put pickups in the Epi that cost about half the price of the guitar itself? I am thinking of doing the same thing with an Artcore, but am having trouble convincing myself that it would be worth it.

    Cheers,

    PoA

  • Yes, basically this makes the Epi an expensive guitar, along with putting in improved tone pots. But, at over 3K for a Gibson, this is still much cheaper. I have a pro guitarist friend who gets a Joe Pass tone on the EPI-175 with the Gibson pups. What do you think about the Artcore pups? I went with the EPI since at the time, I liked the stock EPI pups. Another option is for you to buy an Eastman, though nothing sounds like a good Gibson.
  • Hi,

First of all, I have two Artcores; The pups on my AS103NT are just fine, but that is one of the higher-end Artcores. I recently bought an AF75 that was being cleared out. Needed a fret-leveling, intonation, bridge placement, and a bone nut. The ACH pups don't impress me. They are kind of characterless, clean, a bit too bitey with a bit of overdrive. That is why I am going to change them, but I don't know if I want to spend €200.00 for the Gibsons.

    Cheers,

    PoA

  • Hi PoA,

That AS103NT is a great guitar. I almost got that a

long time ago and I ended up spending about the

same with the work on the EPI :-) I can see why

you might want to just leave the AF75 stock with

having a great guitar like the AS103NT - that thing

    plays perfectly.

  • I hear you but on the other hand you have to understand why the price is what it is. Its all about Chinese/Korean/Third world labor. The expensive Gibson like the ES 175 is maple plywood and so is the EPI so is your Artcore. I would imagine in a blind taste test if you put the classic 57s in it you'll think your playing a guitar that's 2x the price so is it worth it? Do you like playing it?

  • are these the classic humbuckers or classic plus?

  • classic humbuckers. What are the classic plus?

  • The classic plus have a few extra turns of wire for a higher output and are made for the bridge position. Great playing, sounds awesome!

  • JerrysTube - do you own a EPI ES-175 or do you

have the Gibson model? I never played a

    Emperor II, before.

  • The ES-175 is one of the very finest guitars I've ever owned. Today I bought a Epiphone Joe Bass Emperor II. Great sounding Guitars.

  • I was thinking about putting these babies in my Epi Dot.

    Good choice?

The pickups now, kind of make a popping sound when my hand gets near them,or if i touch the pick guard. It's really annoying.

I play Blues/Reggae. Think the pick ups are a good choice for my Dot?

By the way, excellent playing. Did you write that tune yourself? The guitar and the playing sound amazing.

    Keep up the good work.

  • These are the same Gibson pickups that are used

in most Gibson 335s. They would be fine for

your Dot. About half of the tune is just

stuff I made up. The other half is some

    1930s Gypsy Jazz tune - I can't remember

    the name.

  • Thanks, because I'm trying to decide between this or the Epi DOT.

  • Also, check out the Ibanez 335 copy. It is

great. I know it is difficult to choose

between the EPI 335 copy and Ibanez 335 copy.

Also, Hamer makes a semi-hollowbody. And,

of course, the Gibson 335 is what you should

try to get, if you can save up the money.

Finally, check out the Eastman semi-hollowbody.

  • Thanks for all of the help and advice.

  • your welcome.

  • I put a 57 at the neck and a burst bucker at the bridge on my DOT, and damn does it sound great. I play alot of those 50s tones so I really love that warm classic feel that you get from Gibson.

  • How about for a 70's Classic rock sound.

  • Yeah, it can easily do the 70s classic rock

sound. Especially through a Marshall amp.

  • hey, how do those 175's handle

  • 175 plays like an excellent acoustic guitar,

in my opinion. It is more challenging to

handle than a telecaster or strat, but just

as rewarding, since you can really do a lot

with notes and chords. It is NOT for

    shredding :-)

  • hey man very nice playing. I'm am just about to buy a new guitar and i was wondering if this guitar would sound good with distortion to play fusion and rock thanks

  • I think this guitar sounds good partly

distorted. It sounds too muddy if you try

and crank up the distortion too much. It is

    a jazz/blues/ragtime/finger picking folk guitar.

For Fusion, go right out and get a Gibson ES-335.

  • How about putting these in a LP does it give it that classic rock sound

  • Yes - you will get the classic rock sound,

but you might want to consider getting

some single coil pickups (i.e. Gibson single

coil pickups) to get a more "rock and roll"

sound. But, the amp is most of the sound, so

be sure and get a good used Marshall amp or

a new Marshall if you got the money.

  • I finally bought one of these with Seth Lover pups. If you´d like to hear how it sounds follow this link.

    watch?v=IKzek-Gq3CM

  • Nice Sound! I like it. Sweet Guitar.

  • i just got the same pickups and they dont sound like that in my guitar

  • jorgecampero,

How do the pickups sound in your guitar? What

kind of amp are you using?

  • I have a fender blues deluxe reissue and a gibson sg standar

  • Thats your problem. You are playing a thin, solidbody ( SG ), and trying to compare it to a hollowbody. The Hollow body is gonna have a ton more resonance.

  • are these pickups at all muddy?

  • no, they are not muddy. they sound perfect.

But, note this is not a $3000 archtop, so

the woods are not quite as good as the

Gibson, but they are plenty good and 80% of

the sound is through your amp, anyway.

The pickups are real blusey/jazz sounding.

  • Looks and sounds awesome, great playing man. I want to buy the same guitar, how is the action, can you set it to low or is it medium to medium high only. Thanks for posting these videos.

  • Thanks. The action is perfect. Not too low

or high. It is low but not buzzing. I had

a technician adjust the neck and action. Also,

    they adjusted the nut, slightly.

  • which you used pot, 250k or 500k?

  • I don't remember what the guitar repairman used.

I told him to use any pot that he thought was best.

  • Then he probably used CTS 500k pots. Makes the tone knobs extremely useful. I can't stand the 250k myself.

  • A great guitar, and great strumming!

  • ...prefebly in a natural finish. Wish they made them like that.

  • Yeah, me. Epiphones are great guitars for the money. I have a 295. Would love to have an Epi 175 w/ Gibson PAFs.

  • hey, i commented on the other video. im the one with a vintage ES-175. the new pickups really sound great. much better than the stock ones. (and it sounded great before.)

  • Yes, it has a very warm sound. I didn't think

I could enjoy a plywood guitar so much.

Even though I have any all-solid wood Eastman

thinbody guitar (see other youtube video I

have), the EPI gets sounds that the Eastman

can't do. Basically, the EPI has an acoustic

guitar flavor because it is so large. Its like

    playing a Martin with pickups.

  • Hey man this is awesome, im thinking of buying one of these for blues and jazz aswell as early rock n roll,

    any advice on the guitar?

    thanks

  • Have a good repairman check out the guitar

and adjust neck & frets, if necessary. I do

this for most guitar, regardless of brand.

Definitely replace the pups, but if low on

cash, just replace the neck pup with a

Gibson Humbucker or some kind of P90 pup.

The guitar excels at most kinds of music.

  • hey im trying to figure out what guitar i want im thinking of getting an epi es-335 or this what one do you think is better

  • wow you're really good check out my vid its not so good but what the hell I´m only 14

  • Irjif,

    Great keyboards! Sounds very 80'ish.

    Entfred

  • thanks a lot man!

u could check out my brother's vids he plays the guitar and give him some tips.Thnxs

  • his account is Matibtodo14

  • are you using a classic 57 and a classic 57+ pickup?? Im guessing not because that combination makes the guitar sound brittle and you have a very balanced tone...

  • Just normal classic 57s for both pickups.

I think a lot of this depends on the amp

you are using. This guitar excels using tube

    amps.

  • I'm getting one of these :)

  • You are very good!

  • Thanks, madamerotten!

  • You're welcome. By the way, are you married?

  • Madame R.,

What do you have in mind?

  • Someone's horny.

  • Gibson classic 57s. .11 round wound strings -

    can't remember brand.

  • nice :P what pickups are you using. i'm also thinking of changing amp and pickups on my es 175. and what type of string do you use? 5 stars!
