I'd say a good 90% of the people that watch this video don't even fully understand it. It's sad. In my honest opinion this is the most important thing anyone can understand.
@enjoypolydor Instead of our cops, mayors, senators, mobsters, and other leaders corn-holeing each other on cocaine, we should put all of these fucks naked in the wilderness under the "right" conditions. Their greedy, low-brow behaviours may subside somewhat, consequentially. We all can dream, I suppose.
this isn't about me and you, or numbshit two sided politcs, this is about how each and every one of us, down to the last one, is the source of this long decomposed and patched up system, we allow it to exist because we are AFRAID, so we programmed this system THROUGHOUT HISTORY around fear, in our fear we built walls and became complacent, in this we forgot something deeper we all somehow know, but only remember when let go and wipe "reality" off the mind, hence the disasociation inducing drugs
Who are the techs?? Socialist intellectuals the New Shamans of our time?.So when the hard drive goes to blue screen of death we don't reprogram it we throw it away and install a new one.How about, that this guy is so intelligent yet he advocates chemical labotomy of the brain for society to deal with change or illusions of perception.
i think i understand what he's trying to say. I have some ideas for creating an operating system, but is he trying to compare our society to a OS? everytime i tell someone that i am making one, everyone seems to cringe like "oh thats a big problem that you're taking on" What is so incredible and impossible about creating a new OS?
I understand this message. The current culture we live in follows a self destructive path and at the same time disregards and shuns all notions of a multi-dimensional universe that takes us to a more humble state of mind. I want to get away from Western/ industrial corrupted culture many times but my ego holds me back and capitalism threatens my survival rate if I go against it in a revolutionary manner. Despite this conflict, I have DMT and mushrooms. Thank goodness!
Anything that promote sameness is wrong in my opinion.. Anything says because I'm this race or i believe this or my family has a long line of that I cant do what I really want is dangerous to humans period.. Everyone should be living there own perfect different life and letting there belief system come from living life.... In my opinion.. Force people to think for themselves and not be told how to feel or think..
capitialism or anything for that matter is evil only if you have that helpless feeling and you feel like you are not in control of your life. Which if you feel like you have a false feeling because you can live a rich abundant free happy healthy life and let those people run wild..
I do agree on the nature of ethnobotany. Cultures which could adapt their software were probably selected for and as such eventually all extant cultures retained a particular mind/plant symbiosis.
I must point out, however, that barring some Toltec or Atlantean civilization, people have never been so free as they are today in the west. Many may not take advantage of that freedom, but that does not negate its existence.
I've done a lot of upgrading and I disagree with some of McKenna's points. He seems to think all tribal witch doctors were on par with Don Juan. This is not the case, many exert power and influence by means of a supernatural world that only they can see/control. It is not their goal to free peoples mind but to reassert a supernatural claim to power.
Im also very weary of hearing people criticize a capitalism which does not exist. We do not have free trade, we have regulated markets.
A lot of complicated info to process. This is truly fascinating, and I liked the analogy downloading software on computers, which made it easier to understand.

Let's use the analogy of cleaning the windows registry to make the computer go faster. The premise sounds sorta logical until you discuss those familiar with how out of the way the registry is and how extraneous entries just don't do anything and therefor don't get in the way of a fast computation. Likewise the concept of erasure sounds related to amplified concentration or whatever. But the application of psyche-drug to erase those mythical blocking agents is but a hypothesis.

I say The Left Brain World is The Matrix, because it is what is created by The super Left Brain Dominant Banking Elite, which I think of as the machines that control the matrix
I have seen that, but there have been other people that have said what she had said before her; it's just that they are not in the mainstream
Culture always has a way of correcting, reinventing and adapting itself. With every inevitable fall of an empire, cultural patterns are disrupted. Subcultures emerge, new societies form and the insanity of dangerous cultures is once again reborn. The cultural operating system "bugs" eventually compromise the integrity of it's structural framework and the entire machine eventually crashes to it's sad demise. World history has proven this cyclical self-destructive concept time and time again.
We are part of a quantum field, the expression of life, which has a super objective. Evolution. This is the notion we have. This not only makes it clear, but presents us with choice knowing this. It is the condition of awareness that we know as being human. The real struggle is not that of our humanness, but rather our acceptance of personal power. It is a battle of the natural self and the ego. That is the cycle! Culture is nothing more than a program. It is not principle, it is a description!
All of this nonsense to make one point: that capitialism is evil. Your operating system has a bug, however, because it is capitalism that celebrates the beauty of our differences, and of honest human interaction and interchange. Capitalism includes defense of individual liberty, which may include regulations as it may include incarceration for those who otherwise steal from us all.
He never uses the term evil in this video my friend. Terence is merely pointing out the fact that we need to ..."go back to first premises". Then and only then will the capitalist system be able to work it's real magic. I guess it's a work in progress. Enjoy!
@terencemckenna I find that it is generally wasted energy addressing people that have poor comprehensional skills, which seems to be at least half of the population
There are no reasons supplied, just incorrect, short-sighted observations. He appears to argue for tribal structure rather than individual freedom- this is nothing new.
I might aswell say he's a libertarian... You know we're not near fully free anywhere in the world, so I dont get the point that he has to be anti-freedom.
Yes he should've been more polite/contempletaive, that would've been better.
Brazenlooney: your beloved capitalist individualism that separates everyone and tests the limits of inequality in our world is on its deathbed. Do not fear a return to a tribal past which does not honour true individuality but celebrate the promise of true unity and true liberty between all people as complete, enlightened individuals.
The absense of culture is capitalism, and the end ot tribalism, which is pure culture. McKenna wasn't intelligent enough to deduce that, but then again I am the only one with that singular reasoning ability. And look- you now have the gift of acquiring that knowlege with no effort of your own, thanks to capitalism and my generosity. See- with capitalism, even the peasants have plenty of crumbs left around when the producers are done feasting. Enjoy.
Are you trying to say profit doesn't exist when two people barter? Why would anyone barter then? You have been brainwashed by our cultural leaders (Church & State) to think that when people engage in voluntary transactions somehow someone is losing out.
In the world there are two choices, you can voluntarily agree upon contracts and transactions or you can use a gun.
LOL, I'm already subscribed to that guy. I do agree with some of his views, especially on personal liberty. However I do see a problem with the concept of money itself, in that it not a CONSTANT, has objective value, and cannot be used to model holistic concepts. Capitalism per say is inherentnt in nature at the level of ENERGY. A carnivore is not going to chase down its prey if it doesn't gain net energy from doing so. however I have contemplated numerous problems, too many to list.
thanks for asking. Capitalism is based in reason, and culture is the part of any human relationship that is not based in reason. For example, maybe a population chooses to work together to grow some food, and they use science and reason and freely trade knowledge such that they are able to generate a good harvest that is shared as agreed between interested parties. Or, you could have an aztec priest with traditional face paint cutting out he hearts of human sacrifices for a better harvest. See?
Yes ok. Still whatever non-authoritarian form of culture could still exist, even if it's about praying to something non-existant or whatnot. Some sort of gray-zone in your culture vs capitalism. No matter how futile or silly one may think it is, it will be there, and to me it is for human well-being.
As long as "culture" exists within the free thoughts and actions, it's just people doing what they choose to do. The problem is when people begin to imply that a "government" that enforces a "culture" is as valid as a political system that enforces individual freedom; when someone argues that stoning someone to death for adultery is just part of a different "culture" then those people must be corrected for their dangerous and stupid error. Capitalism is not culture, it is a reflection of fact.
Your hubris is merely that of all human beings who lack the vision to see into the future and its glorious possibilities. Forget the past, it just holds you back. Today was just a symptom of a world fading away. Gotta love those loonies!
I don't believe I will ever have anything to thank Capitalism for (I'm still groping for the door). Apart from an opportunity to have a crack at destroying it perhaps. Then, again, it's now doing such a good job at that by itself. I just can't compete anymore! Haha.
@brazenhubris capitalism does not defend individualism. it only promotes the idea of individualism in order to separate men from one another and stop them from organizing and thinking outside the box. but when it comes to what capitalism actualy does is incarcerate great amounts of individuals inside a single crowd wich is easy to control and exploit.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think McKenna has some interesting points to share, but his insistence upon advocating new age spiritualism and psychadelic drug use and wrapping them in technical and transhumanist language is aggravating. It also dilutes the true meaning of the terms he's misusing. Shamanism and Extropianism have almost nothing in common. Max More and Ray Kurzweil must hate this guy for co-opting their terms and giving transhumanists a bad rep. The tie-in to 2012 mumbo jumbo is a new low.
What you're saying is he sort of puts technical terms and basically tells people to get stoned? (correct me if i'm wrong)
Maybe you have a point, but having read his work about the evolution of consciousness, this video makes sense to me..also, have you experienced psilocybin or any other psychadelic?
I admit that what I know of McKenna is strictly from videos and second-hand sources (and a CD by the band "Shamen" which includes a short talk by him), but my comment was intended to refer only to this video.
My only experience with psychadelics is from the outside, "babysitting" a girlfriend while she was using them.
I'm certainly open to being proven wrong, but I've never heard of any meaningful insight coming from psychadelics (purely creative endeavors notwithstanding).
..to 'fish out' medium sized ideas that are beneficial to you in your daily life, it doesn't need to be heavy philosophical ideas..but realizations of how you feel about something (that your ego suppressed) or how you could change perspective to get much more out of life. Especially in this vulgar consumerist world, one needs to do this in order to just stay sane. If I can find my books, I'll try messaging some books/papers names.
Just because these substances are completely tainted with abuse doesn't mean we should neglect to understand their significance. Just because religion has proven to be tyrannical and toxic, doesn't mean we should reject all concepts of divinity. If we are truly devoted to human development we should be able to look into these subjects without certain cultural stereotypes from limiting our exploration of truth.
I am not advocating the use of these powerful substances, however I think its beneficial to discuss their value. Would you consider the 'discovery' of the structure of DNA to be a 'meaningful insight'? Francis Crick was under the influence of LSD when he first envisioned the double helix pattern of DNA.
If you can recommend some reading on the subject that meets basic scientific rigor I'd be genuinely happy to look into it.
By biggest complaint though really is in the co-opting of transhumanist language. I strongly self-identify as an Extropian, and more than once I've had to correct people familiar with McKenna who assumed that it referred to New Age spiritualism, which it does not.
I'd have to agree with your complaint there, I identify with Terrance on many things but he's hardly extropian in any respect.
I've read 'Food of the Gods' where he mentions how consciousness, or rather the ego is an eliminating function in that it eliminates the stimulus coming from the senses to a few basic ones with the ultimate goal of survival. Psychedelics open these floodgates letting you experience these 'higher' senses, he often talks about using these experiences like the shamans did.
If you stronly identify as an Extropian then you miss the point of Mckenna. He's talking about the nature of perception - in that your reality is not my reality. He's talking about transcending culture - thinking outside of the cultural 'box'. Science has furthered man, but it is not the be all and end all. It has fallen into dogmatic traps, degrading ancient wisdom it has made us mechanistic. Go to ethneogens with philosophical knowledge. I suggest checking out Robert Anton Wilson.
Agreed 100%. Crazy how the translation of "Novus ordo Soclorum" on the back of the dollar bill and on the Great Seal, is Latin for "New Order of the Ages." Weird how everything connects to each other.
Yes it is, but this an artistic choice that I did not make (this is not my work). I will add that we are a noisy lot and perhaps this point of confluence needs to be addressed, the noise I mean. You will notice that we really must focus to hear what is being stated here and that a few listens makes it sit firm. That I think was deliberate by the creators of this piece. Amongst the noise there is the silence of the internal ear that knows the distinction between assumption and awareness. Be well.
Yes, at one point in time, before life began on this earth, before the electrical storms that brought the great rains. The earth was grey with molten undertones, it became "blue" soon after. Changing to "blue green" as life evolved. As it is, the earth is becoming "blue brown" as man uses the earth to foster his endeavors. Ecology then, Gaia, the first born of Chaos, is the one who provides. She is the very essence of economy, as is the universe that sustains her. So it goes...
Pure genius. This guy is a shaman, he has been places most people can not imagine let alone comprehend. Looking at himself from a third person in a sense, he saw through the bubble he and everyone else is in through entheogenic experiences.
"you must clear your disk, the best way to do this is with a pharmacological agent... you think of some while I have a drink of water" hehehe
This is a BRILLIANT video! October will be just this, wiping the slate clean, this is why the dollar in American HAS TO collapse, it's system is corrupt and truly NOT needed. Humans ARE survivors in the biggest way and we will previal through this unlike our species have ever done before! Such exciting times right now! GREAT upload Sweetie! Thank you! Nameste~~~
the difference between an elegant drug pusher and a shaman lies on either side of the razor's edge that is experience. Shamanism certainly isn't for everyone, but I'd imagine that it would be silly to endure the disappointment of your current "OS" without seeking out a shaman.
Agreed.. Elegance has it's virtue.. Elegance when used appropriately in the context of appreciation is a central theme in ritual and ceremony.. But when used for self benefit it becomes a tool of deception. The Shaman knows this.. as they play to both sides.. they know that the mind will try to play tricks to reinforce the position of the ego or self. The Shaman's job then.. is to access dissolution through whatever means possible and sometimes those means can appear harsh to the untrained eye.
I will make this easy for everyone. Context.. Context is the trick we agree to play on one another, when we are trying to find something better to do. (We all want results in our favor!). Such is the outcome of where we are at. We have far more in common than we think (Culture Aside). This is the point. So do not complain!! Let's move forward (at the very least for the honor of those who are to come and those who have come before us)...............................................................
Finally.. We all have our unique manner of punishing ourselves (whether we admit it or not). Alarmed I think not! We must link to each other with the finest of regard (without gain in mind). Profit shall come from this action. It is also known as mutual benefit. Kindness then is the first step to remembering our pure state (that accepts individuality and evolution.. sexuality.. action.. and deed..) it is it's own law. The life sustained by life! Abundance! Creation! Joy! Ha! Ha! Everything!! & 0
The only thing that is distorted... is distrotion... this is a youtube video afterall... There is some good stuff here (just as there is good stuff elsewhere... distorted or not) Interestingly enough though... Our individual distortion is a reflection of an energy field called the ego (or self).. so from oneself to the paradigm which is you. I will dissolve in resolution. knowing that something will get in my way (the rocks of progress and the like) but between us. We we are learning how to fly.
Agreed... There is one issue I have at the moment... that being my personal time that I can spend on this project... However one like mind on YouTube you will find on the user homepage (theduderinok) there you will find interesting and useful related info. This selection though is the core of his work. So those of you who comment on this video alone should feel welcome to study all of the 76 pieces available. I did claim this user name with the intention of giving. (As perturbed as that may be).
At this point in linear time, I would like it to be understood that I do not advocate the use of any drug without the prescription of self awareness or for medicinal purposes. The main proposition of this video is not "drug taking", or self abuse, it's about what the title states, this fact can not be ignored. After all, self education is a personal responsibility, is it not? You will note that at 4:24 Terence hints at a vital ingredient to health..."while he thinks of some". Say No To Drugs!

A carnivore is not going to chase down its prey if it doesn't gain net energy from doing so. however I have contemplated numerous problems, too many to list.
dakusahab 2 years ago
Why would capitalism be the absense of culture? I can't picture that (even if I get that that you mean capitalism as a free market(?)).
handianus 2 years ago
thanks for asking. See?
brazenhubris 2 years ago
Yes ok. Still whatever non-authoritarian form of culture could still exist, even if it's about praying to something non-existant or whatnot. Some sort of gray-zone in your culture vs capitalism. No matter how futile or silly one may think it is, it will be there, and to me it is for human well-being.
handianus 2 years ago
As long as "culture" exists within the free thoughts and actions, it's just people doing what they choose to do. The problem is when people begin to imply that a "government" that enforces a "culture" is as valid as a political system that enforces individual freedom; when someone argues that stoning someone to death for adultery is just part of a different "culture" then those people must be corrected for their dangerous and stupid error. Capitalism is not culture, it is a reflection of fact.
brazenhubris 2 years ago
Your hubris is merely that of all human beings who lack the vision to see into the future and its glorious possibilities. Forget the past, it just holds you back. Today was just a symptom of a world fading away. Gotta love those loonies!
Antraeus 2 years ago
I don't believe I will ever have anything to thank Capitalism for (I'm still groping for the door). Apart from an opportunity to have a crack at destroying it perhaps. Then, again, it's now doing such a good job at that by itself. I just can't compete anymore! Haha.

@brazenhubris capitalism does not defend individualism. it only promotes the idea of individualism in order to separate men from one another and stop them from organizing and thinking outside the box. but when it comes to what capitalism actualy does is incarcerate great amounts of individuals inside a single crowd wich is easy to control and exploit.

Datan0de 3 years ago
What you're saying is he sort of puts technical terms and basically tells people to get stoned? (correct me if i'm wrong)
Maybe you have a point, but having read his work about the evolution of consciousness, this video makes sense to me..also, have you experienced psilocybin or any other psychadelic?
tehmushroom 3 years ago
I admit that what I know of McKenna is strictly from videos and second-hand sources (and a CD by the band "Shamen" which includes a short talk by him), but my comment was intended to refer only to this video.
My only experience with psychadelics is from the outside, "babysitting" a girlfriend while she was using them.
I'm certainly open to being proven wrong, but I've never heard of any meaningful insight coming from psychadelics (purely creative endeavors notwithstanding).
Datan0de 3 years ago
..to 'fish out' medium sized ideas that are beneficial to you in your daily life, it doesn't need to be heavy philosophical ideas..but realizations of how you feel about something (that your ego suppressed) or how you could change perspective to get much more out of life.

UniversalBrother108 2 years ago
I am not advocating the use of these powerful substances, however I think its beneficial to discuss their value. Would you consider the 'discovery' of the structure of DNA to be a 'meaningful insight'? Francis Crick was under the influence of LSD when he first envisioned the double helix pattern of DNA.
UniversalBrother108 2 years ago 9
If you can recommend some reading on the subject that meets basic scientific rigor I'd be genuinely happy to look into it.
By biggest complaint though really is in the co-opting of transhumanist language. I strongly self-identify as an Extropian, and more than once I've had to correct people familiar with McKenna who assumed that it referred to New Age spiritualism, which it does not.
Datan0de 3 years ago
I'd have to agree with your complaint there, I identify with Terrance on many things but he's hardly extropian in any respect.
I've read 'Food of the Gods' where he mentions how consciousness, or rather the ego is an eliminating function in that it eliminates the stimulus coming from the senses to a few basic ones with the ultimate goal of survival. Psychedelics open these floodgates letting you experience these 'higher' senses, he often talks about using these experiences like the shamans did.
tehmushroom 3 years ago

Looking at himself from a third person in a sense, he saw through the bubble he and everyone else is in through entheogenic experiences.

the difference between an elegant drug pusher and a shaman lies on either side of the razor's edge that is experience. Shamanism certainly isn't for everyone, but I'd imagine that it would be silly to endure the disappointment of your current "OS" without seeking out a shaman.
fawazr 3 years ago

LOVE IT!! some hardcore truths, to me
ptaba123 3 years ago
I will make this easy for everyone. Context.. Context is the trick we agree to play on one another, when we are trying to find something better to do. (We all want results in our favor!). Such is the outcome of where we are at. We have far more in common than we think (Culture Aside). This is the point. So do not complain!! Let's move forward (at the very least for the honor of those who are to come and those who have come before us)...............................................................
terencemckenna 3 years ago
