I have the EXACT same thing happening. Now it's gone... but does come back with rain or humidity (I live in PHX). Ever stranger... my car recently started a random, faint "whistle" at low speeds like a vacuum module was leaking or something then today the power steering failed, stereo won't work and the lights won't turn on but for a few min. Major electrical failure.
@MrCivichatchback Was it hard to do this? I have 04 civic hatch and its doing the same noise... is the pivot fork under the steering wheel or on the engine bay?
Oh Hell yeah!! My 92 Civic makes that noise too!! It just started yesterday, plus I got a Rack & Pinion a year ago(those last for years). I checked out my boots, tie rod, steering, axle..and can't find what the problem is. It can't be coming from the SRS(Airbag)...it's sounds like it's further down the steering wheel column.
BTW..it only makes that sound when I go 25mph or less. At high speeds it disappears.
I have exactly the same noise with my 03 Civic. Just had a suspension overhaul last week and it didn't change a thing which makes me think it must be the steering column or power steering unit.
i have the same noise i thought it was the stabalizer link so i replace it its worn out anyway but after the noise still there so can you tell me what is the problem coz i dont want to go mechanic always rip me off
hybrids are too quite. any small noise tend to sound dangerous. I think we need to get used to the new set of noises that will come with the electric trend.
My can sounds worst than yours, i tried everything but in vain. now i got used to it, and i am just waiting for it to break. Good luck on yours.
My 1994 Honda Accord Ex is just know starting to to this and i think my left front wheel baring is going out aswell on the car. because it squeaks too. Its very annoying and i find it kinda embarrassing considering all the upgrades i put into my car :( i wanna have it checked out. but im kinda broke. so anyone know what the reason for this is? im thinking it just needs the tie rods and struts and bushings and shit replaced and a new wheel baring
January 2010 UPDATE: About 40 people have all written to me and told me that their civic makes the same noise too! My car still makes this noise from time to time. It will do it for a few months and then mysteriously stop. Then a few months later it will come back. I don't know what is causing it, and it doesn't seem to be affecting performance at all. Still it is a mystery! Perhaps it is something inherently wrong with the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid?
this is the worsest car ever, with cramped back seat, less power, noisie engine going up the hill, and no cupholder in the backseat. and whats worst, we had to replace the battery 3 months ago and it cost $5000, I hate this car, If i can give it a c- I would.
i have an nissan sentra spec v and it makes the same sound ive been to a few shops some say the rack and pinion is bad the dealership i got it from says its because the car is lowered and is normal, it doesnt sound normal.
i've just had the EXACT same noise and i sprayed WD40 on to the steering rack through a tiny hole in the rubber sleeve. i can now steer without my car sounding like a retarded goat.
Giving this a shot tomorrow. I drive a Chevy Impala 07 and they said that it is due to moving parts not covered under the fuckin' warranty. Wasted $50.00 on that shit.
All I will say is you should use Lithium grease (grease in a spray can) rather than WD40 as the WD40 doesn't last very long. WD40 lasted 1 month. Grease is still going strong after 5 months. Good luck!
i have a civic type r and had the same problem its the electric power steering unit if you look under the hood at the back in the middle of the engine bay is the electric power steering unit pinch a small hole in the rubber boot and spray in wd-40 that will solve the problem
I have the same issue with my 05 civic, the dealer changed the drive shaft and front axles but the noise is still there... Do you have a slight vibration on the steering wheel on hwy speeds(over 60mph) too?
Could you please tell me what your RPMs are when at 70 mph in 5th gear? My car is at 3500. That seems a bit high, doesn't it. Most other cars are like usually around 2700. I calculated it and the 2003 Honda gets 30 miles per gallon.
you it sounds more like a ball joint issue to me. a long long time ago..i used to drive a thunderbird...same thing happend..and only when i accelerated, however it became more pronounced as time wore on. take your civic back to the dealer or to a qualified "front end" guy, have them drive it. i'd bet money it's your ball joints.
i have the same noise in my acura integera.

Did you find out what caused the creaking?
munkii888 7 months ago
You need to remove the slave cylinder and inject grease into the pivot of the fork. Mine had the same sound. It's quiet now.

My 2002 Civic Si sounded the same. Fixed it myself 5 months ago...still no creaking. Here is what I did:
Located the steering rack
Put a small dot of nail polish on the rubber boot...close to the center of rack.
Poked a small X with a pen type exacto knife blade just below the dot for location identification.
Took the straw from the Lithium Grease spray can and pushed it into the "X".
Attached the can to the straw, then sprayed 3 quick blasts of that lube into the center of the rack.
Done!!

Power steering pump and/or possible debris to the rack and pinion mechanism. It could cost $1500 for all.

We had a similar problem with a 98 civic. It was the drivers side ball joint. We replaced the ball joint and the problem was gone.
