He forgot to mention at the end, for those that are new to the subject. The 5-th position method works for the E,B,D,A,e strings, for the G string (3rd) you must use the 4th position instead. Also when tuning the E string you don't figure out it's open value, you figure out the value of A, which is the actual 5th fret position. So basically you start out with position 5 on E, then 5 on B, 4 on G, 5 on D, 5 on A and 5 on e, comparing the 5th/4th fret and the previous string - open.
I know this is off topic but a question about the guitar TAB and on reading the symbols. 1,2,3,4 corresponds with the fingers, i.e., 1 for index, 2 for middle, etc., so does X =do not play string? 0=strike as open string?
The numbers are the frets you must strike the string at. You get six lines, representing the strings. Numbers along those lines are where on the fretboard you play the strings in terms of fret number.
You're right about 0 being open. But if X appears in the middle of a chord, i.e. a bunch of numbers in a vertical row, then yes, it means don't play that string. But if you encounter a number if Xs in a vertical row just like a chord, it means percussive strum.
It does and thank you kindly. A problem I'm running into, for example, is when I try to pick the F chord, I notice that my fingers are not quite clearing each other, meaning one finger is touching another string. I'm trying to manuver my fingers to prevent this, but it sure is frustrating.
That's a common problem. You've got to think about arching your fingers... like, literally arching them. Put your fingers on the chord, and pluck each string in the chord you're meant to hit - if it's muffled, fix it. Soon, if you do this enough, your finger muscles will "remember" exactly how you're holding that chord, and it'll get easier.
Keep at it, and keep working, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you can change chords :)
Thank you so much, EJRocky. I will practice arching my fingers. I'll knock off with the questions and try to work these out and other related matters and I really do appreciate your help.
The fingers shouldn't lie flat across the strings - they should be arched, literally curved up, like the legs of a spider. Not too extreme, but just enough to avoid contact with the other strings.
If you have any trouble with anything else, then please, please don't hesitate to message me, and I'll see if I can help :)
well as soon as you tune a guitar the string stretches if they are new so then u gotta tune again... so its better to do that and ps lol i got the same guitar :)

My G string on my strat keeps going out of tune when I bend it? What do you think is wrong?
TrevorRules98 2 years ago 8
@TrevorRules98 The nut needs to be cut and kept up well. Also try to keep the saddles as low as you can for the sake of a small break angle.

Thanks for the tip, now don't break the strings as much
