  • I do not understand how 21 people do not like this video. Everything he said is correct. You can say that you do not like his face, but professionaly everything is fine. In fact, I use this video to teach children corect posture. Thanks Pete

  • @ADHDnessisAwesome

If warm air came out instead of cold air then obviously you need more practice, because the way he explained it is correct. I teach band at Holfred High School, and I specialize in clarinets. I would have said the exact same thing he said.

  • probably want to aim your voicing more towards a C# than a C...

  • @Vonagon Well you need a reed to play if you have on the reed is chipped and you have to replace it

  • Thanks! I got my first clarinet today, and thanks to you, I got a very nice (to be the firts time) sound.

    Gracias desde Chile!

  • wow!!!

  • Just put a clarinet together for the first time and got nothing but squeaks. This is the best video for learning how to get a basic sound. Thank you!!!!

  • okay first, i have my clarinet out with me and im practicing my music because marching band is starting soon, and as i watched your video, all i could say was no. when i was done watching your video, i pulled of my mouth piece and blew the normal air into it as what yo uwould play with and i out my hand underneath, and guess what was coming out? warm air!!!! so please only make videos if you know what your doing.

  • The condensation is there because the air from your body meets a colder substance -the instrument. There is plenty of moisture in cold air i.e. Winter outside air. Cold air on the clarinet simply means fast air do to tongue position. Sax players use different embouchure and it changes the air speed - warm air. Try my experiment of pulling the mouthpiece from your mouth while holding the embouchure- COLD AIR!

  • I'd like to clarify on the "Cold Air" concept. Form WHAT EVER decent clarinet embouchure you like, pull the mouthpiece from your mouth and blow on your hand. You'll find the air is "cold". Cold air is a result of the tongue position in the mouth causing the air to move faster. This makes it cold. Open your mouth all of the way and try to make it cold- it won't happen. Mouthpiece angle goes down instead of out like on the sax (about 45 degrees). Reed strength is related to tip opening!

  • Es un capo! Le hice caso y aprendí a sacar los primeros sonidos sin hacer esfuerzo... You are a great teacher! Thanks!!!

  • I personally would choose a clarinet (even though I already play one) over a trumpet; you see at my school it was really challenging for the trumpet players to get the "buzz" mouth position. The clarinets, however, really got the hang of the "tight corner" position. Actually, my teacher commented on how good I was playing and how nice and tight my corners were.

  • I usually don't like to respond to profanity but I feel like I need to. Cold air is a result of tongue and embouchure position. Smaller cavity=faster air=cold air. The angle is certainly "down" as opppsed to straight out like a sax player would naturally assume. WATCH The video and you will see the angle is a little less then 45 degrees. Hope that helps.

  • ugh, which ones better? clarinet or trumpet?!?!

  • @blackliciousCP It's personal opinion. IM a clarinet player and I love my instrument but I ike the sound of trumpets. I learned to make my clarinet sound a bit like a trumpet. I like clarinet speed, and trumpet tone.

  • @blackliciousCP i would chose a trumpet.

  • OMG THIS HELPED SOOOOO MUCH!!! :D

im just learning how to play and this helped ALOTTTTTTTTTT :DDDD thank you!!!

  • TUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT

  • @dafontenot its a high c

  • sounds like this dude is playing a c-ish

  • In reality you can't control the tempatrue of the air in your body. The "Warm v. Cold" debate simply deals with the shape of your mouth. With a very firm embouchure you'll find that air comes out of your mouth very quickly. This speed of the air is what I refer to as "cold" . With a loose embouchure or more relaxed embouchure you'll find that the air stream is warmer. The clarinet absolutely requires a very firm embouchure. This, in turn, is a cold air stream.

  • so clarinet uses cold air i thought they use warm air. this lesson is intresting...

  • i'd assume what he's trying to say is that cold air goes in. when the clarinet gets warmed up then warm air goes out.

i think blowing in warm air is more for brass musicians.

like the feeling of the "e" and "o" if u think of the cold air it's much easier to get in tune since warm air won't get u that pressure u want on the reed

  • thanks for your comment i understand now.Thats because i play brass instrument Tuba.

  • Thank you for the video. Just a question in regards to achieving a "firm embouchure" with a hard reed: Would you suggest that a beginner (like me) use a harder reed from the beginning. Say a 2 or 3 rather than a 1-1.5?? If you (or anybody else) could let me know that would be great, as I'm having trouble achieving a true clarinet noise when I play... Thanks again

  • I think a 1 or even 1.5 is way to soft for anyone. you should start on a 2.5 and work your way up form there

  • Thanks a lot! :)

  • Wonderful, Thanks !!!!!

  • I play clarinet

  • I don't.

  • well its pretty fun

  • etdejazz.

when you just exhale out of your mouth... the air is warm...

    but try this..

pretend you're about to blow out candles on your cake... and put your hand in front of your mouth... the air should be cold.

  • im sorry its hard to explain........ try exhaling slowly to get warm air then try exhaling rapidly to get cold air......

  • I don't play clarinet. I play alto saxophone, yet when I tried to play my cousin's clarinet I couldn't get a sound out. I listened to thsi guy and tried again. Still can't make a sound out of it! HAHAHA

  • @Esperant3 i play clarinet and i think your problem may not be with your embochure but with the reed you're using. The reed may be too hard, too soft, too moist or not moist enough. -- Hope i helped.

  • thanks

  • Cold air? HOW do you get "Cold Air" out if your lungs that is WARM??? - Sorry, but that's gibberish you're talking. ;-(

  • he means concentrated air is cold but unconcentrated air is warm

  • then ur probably not blowing properly, you must be exhaling

  • there's a big difference between blowing and just exhaling

  • TOOOOOOT TOOOT TOOOT!!! XD

  • Well, this was gay...Especially a 0:10 when u say hi all gay and shit...geta life

  • Well, naruto is gay...Especially a 0:10 when naruto say hi all gay and shit...geta life

  • I still have to disagree. If you are saying the angle is not down, then what is the angle? It sounds like you are implying that there is no angle (maybe 90 degrees?). Any clarinet player knows that your head must be up, and the clarinet goes down. Somewhere in the neighborood of 45 degrees or between your knees. Any where other than down will definetly not give you the characteristic clarinet sound.

  • I'm not saying the instrument touches your stomach! The angle is down. If you spend anytime watching young, untrained players, you will see that they try to play it more like a saxophone. I'll agree more or less with the "eau" face- However, there should more distance between the nose and the top lip. The distance between the nose and top lip must be tall. I don't get that with "Eau"

  • hi there! for some reason am not gettin any sound even with the mouthpiece alone, am blowing but nothin comin out but wind! what can be wrong? am a beginner and i dont wana leave the whole thing

  • Try tightening your lips. Don't give up! It's hard for everyone at first!

  • The note you are meant to get when you blow into your mouth piece alone is a high c sharp

  • wow thank you i can finally hear a sound rather then me blowing lol

  • HA HA

  • Couold you teach?

  • yeah sure

  • hahaha unnecessary...

  • i bet i could play better than you

  • Probably...

  • i can!

  • Thanks a lot, it was a great help.

The sax lessons are also very interesting.

With guy like you, we can learn at home almost any instruments.

    Many many thanks Swid441.

  • wouldnt warm air cause the sound to be darker?, and a darker sound is better....

  • Warm air will cause the sound to be very flabby and flat.

  • thats if you dont know how to control you air quality

warm air also makes the sound more round and dark

  • Warm air also makes the sound spread and lack center.

  • Comment removed

  • yep you were right

  • it is funny when he says oooo

  • Thanks for this video. It really helped me find my proper embrouchre to get that good sound. :D

  • My little finger jerks after playing the high b and c for long lol. How do you soften new reeds? I tried seasoning it by sucking and blowing low notes but it didn't really help much): Any help on how to hold long breaths and produce good tones?(: Sorry I asked so much=X

  • Try soaking the new reed in luke-warm water. That usually works

  • thats what she said

  • could you please tell me what is the best clarinet for the new beginner...thanks..

  • Try a plastic yamaha clarinet.

  • i just tried that and amazingly it is the right pitch, but it sounds much higher!

kinda helpful - i need to readjust mine because i keep overblowing trying to get extreme register.

  • i have a problem. playing the clarinet realy hurts my right thumb because it has to support the whole instrument. is there any way to get this to stop?

  • well, all clarinetists kinda have to contend with this, but try using a thick thumb rest. It helps!

  • wait till you try bass!

  • Haha, you're absolutely right. lol

  • ...

  • EEEEEE

  • A person searching for "clarinet lesson" is not going to have any idea what embouchure is.

  • What if we can't play the piano? I can't. Also could you have warned me before you blew on that. Plus my band director taught me TOO not O and E.

  • How is four hard to play? I play 2, 1/2. I'm a beginner.

  • The highest the number, the hardest to play on the reed. Am I wrong?

  • 4 is not the hardest reed. The most common and easiest to find are hardness's of 1-5. 5 1/2 - 6 1/2( I'm not exactly positive about how high you can get them on special order, since there is virtually NO information on them since it is so uncommon) can be bought through special order or at a music store that carries specific wind instrument supplies.

now... for how 4 is hard to play.. it's a much stiffer (or harder..) reed then say your 2 1/2, and makes a much clearer high note.

  • Actually 5 is the hardest you can get.

  • Damn, I used the superlative instead of the comparative...so: The highER the number, the hardER to play on the reed. And I mean that you must blow it much harder to get the same sound.

  • true. That is the simplest way to put it.

  • Oh, I thought you tried it. I was asking how it was hard if you like had to blow harder or..... I wasn't trying to be rude.

  • hey why does a Bb always sound so airy on a clarinet? the one where u finger the register key and the one in front. my A used to be airy too but i fixed that...

  • It should not be airy. Take it to your local music store. And have them look at it. Hope this helped. Mine was airy, too. So I took it to my music store nearby. They fixed it. A key could possibly be bent. I had two bent keys. Shouldn't be airy.

  • in beetwen the reed and the mouth piece the space will make it produce the sound withe the mouth peice leave to much space the clarinet will sound arie leave less the reed wont vibrate as much hope tht helps

  • first i think that should not be the first leason you need to know how the clarinet mouth piece worksthe first thing you should know is that the mouth peice is your instument the rest is just u covering holes now we all know that the clarinet has 5 different sizes the higher the # the harder the reed is the harder the reed the richer the sound and the more it vibrates the more it vibrates the louder and richer the sound the next thing is the space

  • ddddd

  • ...

  • Podia ter legendas em português!

  • Thank you so much!! Now I can play the Clarinet!!

  • cazzo dici...eh eh

  • Chiedilo a tua madre cosa dico..XD

  • bastardo!!! ahahah XD

  • I just can't get a note out of the clarinet, I just get loud squeaks...

  • I can get the right sound out of just the embouchure, but when I attach the rest it basically makes the same squeaks.

  • You're either blowing too hard, or you have to tighten your embouchure.

  • your eaither blowing too hard, or you need to tighten your embouchure. btw, if your covering any holes, then make sure no air is leaking out.

  • hey well i already know how to play clarinet...but do you know of any good concert songs to play for a college audition? and where i can get the sheet music?

  • my band teacher said to have the bell of the clarinet alittle past my knees not strait down or almost straight down but the video really helps

  • Yes, you're supposed to play the clarinet at an angle, if the bell's straight, the sound will just go down.

  • gd vid!

  • HI, Your video was great, and most helpful. You are really a natural teacher! Thank youl Send me more.

  • Thanks a lot! Great!

  • Nice vid, I believe the sound that comes from the mouthpiece and the barrel is an F# on a tuner.

  • when i blow with just the mouthpiece, it seems a little squeaky but not total beginner squeaky like when i started 2 years ago

  • Hey man, you're right for sure, although i tell my students to try to form a shape of a smile and whistle at the same time- they find it easier to get than eee and ohh. Also sometimes just trying to blow 'cold' air on their hand works. For girls, thinking about putting lipstick on their bottom lip is another useful one. There's lots and as i'm sure you've found, there will always be one student who doesn't get your normal way of teaching it.

  • im a grade 7 clarinet player in yr 10 and i think this is a helpful video for beginners and every1 watch the benny goodman and red norvo 1960 duet i can play the clarinet part. message me

  • awesome i just joined my middle school band to. the clarinet is awesome! but i think it would be almost impossible to get better than benny goodman. i love this vid helps a lot!

  • artie shaw is also A BEAST! like benny , dont know wnhos better though

  • Benny Goodman's better. Artie Shaw's as close as it gets, though.

  • thank u so much i just joined my beg. middle school band and it was pretty kwl

  • When I say point down, I'm just looking to have it down about 45 degrees. The most important angle is the one coming out of the mouth. It should be about 45 degrees. Some players like to pull it in a little tighter. Going the other way will effect the sound negatively.

  • Thanks for your very clear description - I'll try and follow your advice!

  • well i have to say this helps a bit.
