You should be cautious when updating your phone. Not only will it erase the jailbreak but you never know if other consequences could come of it. It's always best to wait to hear from the iphone dev team on updates

Ok...

1. If you bought your phone sometime after late october you might have the new bootrom which means you'll have to use blackra1n to boot up

2. When your jailbroken you should NEVER update until a dev tweets that it's safe, I'd follow myself or MuscleNerd on twitter

3. Both the 3G and the 3GS involve the same steps, so both are easy. Just depends if you have the new bootrom

I am following your directions exactly. Prior to jailbreaking the phone and running blackra1n, I restore my phone and deleted everything. Next, I turned off 3G and ran blackra1n. Next, I download and install c;ydia (first by itself) and install snow (to unlock the phone to use on Tmobile). After everything is done, the phone will only display "No Service" with my Tmobile sim and I can't make calls. No issues with my ATT sim. I am able to make calls on ATT, nothing on Tmobile. That means you need to run blackra1n again!

Don't restore, just simply plug it in, run "blackra1n.exe" then it will boot up as normal!
