I really like this performance. It has a great edge visually that reflects my personal interpretation of the movement. I do want to cringe though at starting at such a fast tempo. I'm glad the violist anchors the piece in more steady waters once he starts his solo at the recap, but I do wonder if the tempo shifts were deliberate.

aaah, I love how you can hear every voice separately; in other versions often theres only a mass of sound. also very clear punctations, where I didn't know that there were some before!! great!

I have watched this video so many times and I can never get over how awesome it is. Although I think it's a tad fast, the players keep the tempo the whole time and never seem to falter, so obviously the tempo isn't a problem. Plus, the violist is sick. I don't agree with anyone who doesn't think his solo is good as I really think it totally captures the essence of what Shostakovich was trying to capture with it. Rocks my socks.

this is the second movement. shostakovich wrote the quartet so each movement flows into the other. thats why the end of this movement is a bit of a cliffhanger; it's supposed to go right into the third.

Yes it's too fast, but man did they pull it off much better than any of the other fast versions out there, by far. You guys rock so hard!

It's so funny to see the violin just machine gunning out the notes with the viola just melting trying to keep up. Awesome.
