  • The part that seems horribly mangled is from around 4:08 onwards!! YIKES!

  • @thibaulthalpern It seems like some more practicing of simple one-octave scales would have been in order, plus an appropriate set up of the final cadence.

  • Is it just me or did he horribly mangle the last part of this piece? It sounds like a clashing of notes. Mis-fingering?

  • Very nice.

  • good piano player

  • the harmonious blacksmith is the best song i ever heard.....good job handel...you shall always be remembered for this wonderful song

  • All that music on two sheets of music or did he never look at the book? =)

  • lol funny thing is this is actually supposed to be a slow song...its just that so many people prefer playing it fast that everybody is used to hearing it fast

  • good dynamic range, the added ornaments was unnecessary, but i think it helped to the performance. The beginning may have been a bit too slow, for it suggests the song to be flowing and not dragging by the andantino tempo mark, but very good performance.

  • very beautifully.. but maybe a bit too slowly..

  • who---waaaaaaayyyy too slow

  • I don't think it's slow except in the beginning

  • lol the speed is just right

  • I like the steady rhythmic build-up in this rather slow version. But check out Gert-Jan Koolen's version to see how the left and the right hand should be balanced!

  • I think hes very good. This peice is very difficult! VERY! I agree with jpmorganchaseco, can you play better? I bet not! can you play Handel, Debussy, Mozart? You try, it will take hours of practice for you critics.

  • i can't play the left hand trills :(

  • thats okay! for being able to even play this peice really well, you get alot of credit! just keep practicing!

  • thanks for the compliment :)

  • I'm guessing i'm pretty lucky that my left hand is more agile than my right, so thats good...

  • I have no trouble with left-hand trills, it's just that part where you have to play the actual song that befuddles me :)

  • mooi!

  • nice piece :D

  • Well Done Gordon, People don't know that you do this all while It is beautiful, you have a great future, and i know this last year with your occupation away from home has made it harder to study, and practice. Good Luck, David (Australia)

  • WOW, he's SOOO good he doesn't even LOOK at the music! :D

  • Thank you dear

  • For those of you that are being critical of his playing, can you play better? Probably not. So stop attacking him. Anyways, piano pieces are open for interpretation, there is not a one "perfect" and "must" way to play a sonata.

  • Some of the descending scales have wrong notes.

  • @morocho2000 It seems like it is to me.

  • merci pour cette interprétation pleine d'âme et de sensibilité maîtrisée

  • Dynamics are absolutely out of order. Not bad, anyway

  • i agree this piece needs to be play a bit faster but you're amazing nevertheless.

  • I agree, this piece was played way too slow. And I cannot believe the amount of pedal he used! It's the Baroque period!C'mon!

  • It's not played way too slow. You argue, that it's the baroque period, but want him to play faster. Hm.

The use of pedal in this work depends on the individual taste. Compared to other performances he uses not too much pedal. Heard players using much more.

Sure, it's not played on a harpsichord. But i think, that it's not a rule to play early piano music with a harpsichord. The modern fortepiano was invented in 1711 and this piece was released in 1720.

  • I am not arguing that because it's the Baroque period he should be playing faster. Overall, if you listen to countless performances of this piece of music, this work is always played quicker. In regards to the pedal, I agree that the use of pedal is up to the performer. But during the Baroque period, there was no pedal on the harpsichord. In such Baroque pieces, pedal should be used for effect not for joining purposes. It's a rule of thumb for piano.

  • Sure, a lot people play it faster, but it doesn't mean it's right. It can be played faster, but it doesn't have to be played faster. In the Baroque period pieces were played betw. 40 and 60 bpm. But we are not used to that tempo today. So we have to make a compromise.

Sure, on the harpsichord, there isn't this pedal. But on the 1711 invented and then developed "Hammerklavier", you can already find this pedal on instruments built in the 18th century, maybe also on the first ones.

  • played way too slow...this piece should be played on harpsichord

  • I agree that it's a bit slow, but this piece can sound good on the piano too (having played it myself). The harpsichord and piano are so different that you can't compare the two. Both sound good =D

  • Having just listened to Rachmaninov's recording, I don't know if I can say that they compare...but well done still!

  • Not bad. Very poor recording though and the last variation was messy. Also the dynamics were all over the place , and the tempi a bit slow in variations 3 thru'5.

Easy piece technically though, Key Emaj and should be OK for a grade 5/6 ABRSM candidate.

  • Do you seriously believe this piece is easy technically?? That is absolutely ridiculous. When it is actually played at the speed required, it is not 'easy'.

  • How hard is this piece, in your opinion?

  • Hard, technically demanding. even when played slowly it is not a piece of cake...

  • sounded really nice until the last variation. (scalic passages)

    the tone sounded too harsh...

but i its hard performing in front of an audience, so bad luck with the last passage, i'm sure you can play it perfectly at home, and keep it up

  • That was so pretty! I played that a couple of years ago at State.

  • Good Job. I am playing this on the harp right now, and I played it on the piano too. It is a really fun piece!

  • Gordon, You are a treasure.

  • Thank your for playing the piece.

Won't you please play Sonata # 3 in C Major by Mozart?

  • wow! Great!

  • hi thanks for that i love that piece have fun

  • Very nice keep up the good work.

  • thank you dear. I am glad you like that :)

  • That was great, I enjoyed your music.
