means

"because the bird that's escaping will come to forget in its nest".

But somehow i think you know that and thought it wouldn't make sense in English, right?

I first heard this song MANY years ago in the german WWII movie Das Boot, and just happen to fall upon it. I totally forgot how much I love this song. Thanks for the translation and the reminder. I so understand the connection in the movie now. Vive Lamore!

In Italian the song was "Tornerai," which means "You'll return." Funny...the German (Komm zuruck) asks you to return; the French (J'attendrai) says I'll wait because I know you'll return; the Italian (Tornerai) says flat out you WILL return; The Spanish (Volveras) also says you'll return, but admits to feeling a little desperate. Guess the Italian has the strongest self-image.

I love the video, and enjoy the lessons learned from the other posters. In one respect, the song reminds me of one sung by Cuban Ibrahim Ferrer, and Omara Portuando. It was not until his appearance on the collective project "Buena Vista Social Club" that he received wider recognition. The song is "Silencio", and it is exquisite and poignant. I like knowing what the lyrics are, but I think it sounds better in Cuban Spanish. Well worth checking out.

Isn't that often the case! What sounds dreamy and romantic in a language you don't understand may turn out to be rather pedestrian words...to be honest, I thought these lyrics were pretty good (especially in French).
