  • So Beautiful, one of if not my most favorite choral works.

  • this is very good, shame they slipped nearly a whole semitone during this performance :/ but a really lovely piece :)

  • absolutely beautiful! we did this for my winter chorus concert and i just love this beautiful Russian hymn! Amazing performance and perfect setting!

  • Being a bass at 1:53 kicks so much ass it is unbelievable.

  • What a gorgeous place to be singing such a fantastic piece of music.

  • Sung this in my high school chorus....and fell in love, thanks for the post

  • beautiful <3

  • absolutely amazing, gives me chills. i love this piece of music, the most beautiful piece i have ever sang i think. i sang it a couple years ago and my choir is singing it this weekend.. can't wait to put up our recording :)

  • I'm 13 and I'm singing this in my girls choir. It is so pretty... especially the bit at the beginning when the altos come in. I am a quarter Russian so maybe this helps with m pronunciation!

  • I was only searching something regarding this piece because we'll sing it in our choir and I wanted to get an idea about it. It is a wonderful piece of music, but this performance is fantastic! I LOVE IT! I've already seen and listened to it around 10 times!

And I couldn't find any other interpretation around here which could reach THIS quality!

    Thanks so much for sharing!

    Cheers!

  • Beautifully done! I performed this same piece some time ago and it beings back memories.

  • One year later and I still think this is the most outstanding rendition I've heard of this piece. The tempo is superb, the men's voices are a underpinning of beautiful resonance, and all the voices at times seem to soar. The sostenuto is seamless throughout. Just a wonderful performance. Thank you again for sharing.

  • How the hell could ANYONE dislike this?

  • impressive!!!

  • THE BASS IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • where was the low c?!?!?!?!

  • @almostadu The one for the tenors? If that's the one, I was looking for it too.

  • @lolabkny i meant the low c for the basses in like the last couple measures

  • Haha, this takes me back. We'd always be so excited to practice this in choir. "Bogo! Yeah!"

  • I have sang this song- and it's incredible

I have sang in this cathedral- and it's incredible!

I wish I could have sang in this group- Because they were incredible!

    Great Job!!

  • @lea597 The participle of "to sing" is "sung".

    The grammar police strike again.

  • @dufus912 LOL pardon my apathy when it comes to grammar... Especially on social sites such as youtube! :)

  • This is a WOUNDERFUL preformance... I remember doing this... it will always be my FAVOIRTE of all of our music. "And so it goes" is also a favoirte of mine ;] OH and there are different version that are sang differently. "bogo. djevo" is a bit faster i think. This is "DEVO"

  • @SAMONEY07 I must say, I checked out your profile because of this comment. My a capella chamber choir did "Bogo" and "And So It Goes" in the same year. I was curious if you were an alumni or not. I'm glad you have marvelous taste in a capella music, though.

  • coisa mais linda!

  • BRILLIANT!

  • this is the most beautiful song i've ever sung, i fell in love with it

    :)

  • this is so good!!!

  • no low C :(

  • We just got our music for this peice today in my choir class, but it seemed like we sang it a bit faster...Hmm. Either way, its an absolutely stunningly beautiful song.

  • The intonation is dodgy here at times but it is an extremely rich tone.

  • We're currently working on with piece with Robert Sund and it's one of my favorite pieces. It's so beautiful. It can be sung with a quick tempo or slow like this.

    Simply divine.

  • Singing this any faster would be improper. One should always recall the setting of the piece.....this is part of a religious service. Imagine yourself in a candle-lit Orthodox Church during the evening with the music coming from behind and above. Any faster and the experience wouldn't be as spiritual.

  • We did this song for our choir concert, and it was awesome. We did really well

  • this is really well done!! huge cathedral.. i'm lovin' the acoustics

  • My choir is working on this. It's absolutely ... beautiful doesn't even describe. I have to refrain from crying everytime we sing 1:53.

  • @xXGabriellaXx I know! Its such a beautiful piece

  • This is one of the most moving and solemn interpretations that I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this, it brought tears to my eyes.

  • I am an OCA , Orthodox Christian, (Orthodox Church in America) I am so thankful St Herman came from Russia to Alaska to enlighten the North American Continent. I grew up thinking only Greeks or Serbs were Orthodox! Our choir is practicing this in English. It touches me deeply. knowing the words in English. It is beautiful.. I am so thankful to know the Theotokos and understand the depth of who she is that I did not understand as a protestant. Glory to God unto Ages of Ages Amen!!

  • Neskutečně krásné jak celé Rusko.

  • gorgeous- my choir is working on this at school, i absolutely love it.

  • The applause ruined it, but it makes a massive difference seeing and hearing this in a cathedral. This truly is as close as we'll get to singing with the angels before death.

  • This is really lovely. Beautiful tempo and expression throughout. Excellent presentation in all respects. Thanks for sharing!

  • Of all the versions I have heard on YouTube, this one is possibly the best. But just once I wish I could hear it in my own language, English. The entire Vigil service IS available in English, but I've only heard it done once.

  • The liturgy is kept in a sacred language for a very good reason, and we can see that abandoning this principle has had on the worship of Catholics.

  • I can't think of a single version of anything that I have enjoyed more once translated into english.

  • You can hear it in English in an OCA church - Orhtodox Church in America- look online for one near you.

  • Oh how I miss this song. It is beautiful.

  • I'm proud to say I was part of this performance..very emotional

  • Tears come to my eyes at 1:50.

This moment is supposedly one of the most emotional/ amazing parts of choral history.

And it truly is. I wish I had a better choir to have sung this with. It's very emotional as you sing it as well if you know what it's talking about.

Russion is such a beautiful language.

  • I think of it more as focusing on the words that are being sung. But I do understand exactly what you are saying.

  • To say nothing of Russian.

  • I love the bass at the end!! So beautiful!

  • everytime i hear this i get chills. beautiful. i wish i could sing this piece again with a choir.

  • Wonderful

  • amazing

  • Estas tre bele, kiel floro malfermanta. Ho mia Sinjorino! Reghin' de la Cieloj!

  • 1:19 - 1:50 Go Altos!! It's so rare that we get the spotlight, ladies.

I love this piece. Great performance.

  • Kdo cestoval Ruskem delší dobu ví o čem tato krásná hudba vypovídá a čeho je ve světě málo-pokory a skromnosti.

  • i have sung and conducted this piece many times and really find it to always come to my mind when programming concerts! It's truly one of the great gems!

  • excellent job.

  • Beautiful... I believe that that is exactly how Rachmaninov would have wanted it. truely amazing congratulations

  • 1:55 is life changing...

  • This brings back rich memories for me singing this in Vienna, Aus in 2004 as a senior in High school. Thank you for getting suck a great quality video 2 bring back memories!

  • 2:00 <3

  • Incredible performance of a beautiful song! The balance and dynamics really bring it all together. I would love to hear it live in this setting.

  • this is one of my favorites to perform and conduct too!

  • my choir sang this song at state (:

  • We did this song for our school choir last year, I really loved it. It stuck with me as one of the most, if not THE most beautiful I/we've ever sung.

  • our choir sang that when we were attending choir competition in slovakia. Our conductor taught us so well, but there were only 28 of us, so imagine singing this with only half of this choir... and it was great :D

  • absolutely beautiful!

the 3 selective choirs at my high school are singing this together tonight. most of us just learned it yesterday and we actually have a very similar sound to the choir in this video! i think it sounds almost identical. i sing alto in this piece. :)

    wonderful job!

the best out of all the others on youtube.

  • this is such a beautiful performance!! BRAVO!

  • ooohhhh that is such the place to sing this piece... blows me away... I love it......

  • whenever I hear the amazing crescendo at 1:50, I picture the sky opening up, and standing right there is the one thing that makes me happiest in life...an astonishing song...

  • eee. my choir did this last year with two other choirs... love!

  • from 1:22 through 2:00 ........chills.

  • I love this song!! My choir is singing it, but we suck at it.......alas.

  • i adore this song. my choir sang this for our holiday cd. and i miss singing it.

  • this song never fails to give me the chills. sang it for choir back in highschool. its beautiful

  • Love 1:50 through 2:10. It's like the heavens opened up. Gorgeous. And much love to the basses.

  • You knocked it right on the Head!! like the UJ Choir!

  • Fantastic... I agree with a previous poster though that the entrance should have been more pp. It would have made 1:54 that much better! I wish I could sing this again :-/

  • HELL YES FOR BASS!!!!!

I've seen too many choirs do this song and have a horrible bass section. Most of the choirs I see on youtube either make me cringe or go, "That's ok, but it could be way better" This was neither of those, it gave me goosebumps, and that is very hard to do.

This is probably my favorite song, ever. Everything about it is just amazing.

    Very nice Job.

    4.8 (I've never give 5's)

  • im a bass in my choir but i wish i could sing tenor.

  • Not enough sopranos is what it sounds like.

    It's good though.

    Just too deep.

  • i would have to agree, but still, they have enough people to make it just astoundingly beautiful

  • dunno... my problem with other versions on youtube is the lack of deeper tones. this one has a good bass base.

  • hehe, bass base...

but in all seriousness, the basses on this version are gorgeous. and the altos are... audible! ::gasp::

all in all, very well done.

  • WOOT!!! Audible altos!!!

  • @mbw3451 :) yes!!!

  • That's actually how it's written...I mean, they're not perfect, but the piece is written to have stronger low tones than uppers. :)

  • tenor FTW!!!!!, i love singing tenor, we always (or almost always) get fun parts

  • i think the fun part is for the bass. the whole coming out of nowhere going to forticimo

  • gotta say, the little tenor-soprano duet backing up the altos is fun, but the opening up part naer the end, its like watching a flower bloom, its so beautiful xD

  • in russian music the bass part is the most important :)

but every voice is so beautiful here, especially the way they sound together :)

  • Tenors (along with sopranos) typically sing the melody while the altos and basses sing harmony in most pieces. While the diplomatic response is that each section has its importance in any piece being sung, having been a tenor myself lends me to say that tenors and sopranos rock! However, with age, my range has diminished so now I'm (at best) a lower-ranged tenor or possibly baritone now. I really miss singing. It was the one thing that got me through the chaos that was high school.

  • The crescendo of sopranos is wonderful, but...what about the altos' phrase immediately before? It's only ten notes, but I liked to be an alto to sing it!

  • omg!! sicut cervus is my fav too!! i cant wait for the next choral fest! =D

  • i liked sicut cervus song the most, and down by the riverside!! hope you go again for next years choral fest!!

  • OMg!! yah!! we were awesome!! 4 days was not a lot of time right?? that lady cried right??

  • we sang this for one of our malaysian choral workshop thingi it rocked!!!!!! whooohooo still makes me wanna cry.. there were 280 ppl singign and we learnt it in 4days

  • yup!! its rox!! I MISS ANDRE!! LOL...

  • YAAAHHH-KOOOO!!!! I just love being a base.

  • the crescendo in the sopranos.

my god this piece is so beautiful!

  • This piece is so beautiful rachmaninoff did an awsome job. Amazing!

  • What a great song!!

  • i adore this piece.

we are singing it in my middle school choir, and compete tomorrow.

    the did a wonderful job.

  • this song brings tears to my eyes. I love this song so much. I sang this in my high school choir and the song still haunts my mind as a past memory of good times with the choir I miss.

  • Glorious.

  • This is my favorite choral piece by far...i adore this piece...amazing.

  • ...ummm great up to the climax the yako spa sa the basses need to get their voices out of the back of their throat but up to that it was great. but if we put our voices in the back of our throats like that our director would shoot us on stage

  • i completely agree with this comment. at that point of the song, the basses and altos need to be dominant. with the basses hiding their voices in their throats, it almost sounds empty.

otherwise, a great performance, and an awesome place to perform.

  • I dunno, you could be right about the throat hiding, but maybe they sang it well and a lot was lost through an imbalance on sound levels in the camera? Whatever the case, best version of it on youtube.

  • yeah, lower frequencies can sometimes be masked on a home video recording such as this, especially if there's background noise. this can be really annoying, being a bass myself, because you'll put in what you think is a great performance, then listen to a recording and wonder where your section went :S

  • gorgeous! my choir is singing this right now and it is one of the most amazing songs i have ever sung, let alone heard

  • great song

  • ohhh, my god, the roof of the cathedral came off and the souls flew away to the sky. this is one of the most beautiful sacral choral works ever. amazing.

  • i love this peice .. i sang it in NJ's regional choir a few years ago.. but this is a wonderful performance.. simply amazing!!

  • fabulous tone. Excellent growth within a phrase... sometimes the vowels got a little wide, climax was great! dynamics need to be a little more dramatic. but over all very good

  • beautiful! love the climax to this piece, especially since i'm a tenor! thanks for posting. well done

  • Awesome. My only criticism would be the opening dynamic. It starts a little louder than I would like it. I think of the opening as an incredible secret that you're having a difficulty keepign inside you. That way, once you get to the climax, it is so drastic! Great job!

  • i had 2 hear this cause i was curious how can they sing in russian and.. i'm surprised, positively, great song , great gig,, wish i could hear this live

  • It sounds really great and I think all of them enjoyed singing this beautful song. But in the end, they sang something like an E - chord instead of F, they "sank" (I don't know.if that's the right expression 'cause I'm from Austria) a little bit during singing

  • aaah this is amazing def best version on youtube! it sounded kinda empty when we had to do it tenor baritone bass lol!

  • Wait, you mean you sang this TBB without soprano or alto?

  • Wounderfull performance, I just can't stop listning... congratulations!

  • Really nice version ^^ I needed this cause I need to learn it cause I can't get to the rehearsals my choir do all the time :(

  • i love this song...and singing it...great job

  • I adore this piece. We did it my freshman year in Chamber Choir and we're doing it again (my senior year). Lovely acoustics. I think the only thing that was off about this piece was the diction for you guys. They said the same thing about our choir at district though. Lol, apparently we made it sound like Italian.

  • Hey, I am in The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus in Ohio and we are doing Bogo for our Holiday Concert! Awesome!

  • Wasn't this video filmed in the church where the incident involving a priest and a group of skateboarders took place?

  • very beautiful! i loved this song when i got to sing it.

  • I bet the acoustics were amazing in that cathedral!

  • yea, im in my high school singing group, they kinda overkilled when the basses come in though.

  • umm yeah...too bad you cant hear the sopranos very well, possibly the prettiest part, kinda trampled on. lol. good anyways.

  • WOW. beautiful. the best version of it here on youtube so far. brilliant! I'd have just liked it even more if the altos had stood out more at approximately 2:20 (is that sentence correct? :D)

  • That was beautiful....takes me back. Also my favorite. You're a life saver.

  • Definitely brings back memories, thanks for posting!!

  • It was incredible being a part of this evening with the Harvard Radcliffe Colegium Musicum - a night I won't forget in a hurry!

  • Very, very, very good!!

  • Wonderful Blend, and diction of each vowel. Its not my particular favorite of Rachmaninov himself, but it was conducted beautifully. Bravo Tutti.

  • I got to sing this song in NY at the NY Heritage Music Festival. This song is truly something special. It brought me back. Thank you for posting this!!! God Bless!!!

  • Very well done! Good diction with the Russian. And you sing it with balls the way it should be sung.

  • It's not my favourite from Rachmaninov but very well done. 5/5

  • fantastic!! i absolutely love this piece, is my favourite ave maria by far
