  • Hi Derek, i really love your drumming style, i am a beginner - intermediate drummer, can you tell me how to practice for this kind of drumming style??

thank you i can't stop watching and listening to your drumming!

  • @robchang22 Hey Rob! Glad you liked the video, man! As far as learning to play these styles, a good start is Tommy Igoe's "Groove Essentials" Book/CD/DVD offerings. Outside of that, it's just a matter of finding good Latin music and listening to it a TON in order to pick up on the little nuances that make the drummer's playing sound authentic. :)

  • Your style is so cool.Very relaxed and your fills and transitions are exactly what I want to emulate as I become a better drummer. Keep on playing man - thanks for the vids!

  • @WASTELANDDRUMMER Thanks for the compliments, Caisha! I'm very flattered. More vids to come soon! :D

  • I *do* remember you, Victor! Thanks for your continued support and kind words, my friend. :)

I do have an endorsement with Soultone, yes. I love their stuff, and even though they're not one of the "big three" cymbal manufacturers, I'd put their stuff up against the other guys any day of the week. I've been really happy with the quality, sound, look, and feel of their products. And they're great people to work with, as well - which is important to me.

I will go look for Cleverson now! :D

  • Hey dude! Remember me? I'm always watching your videos, you're an excellent drummer...

By the way, I really liked your Soultone Cymbals. Do you have an endorsement or something?

In Brazil, we have a gospel drummer named Cleverson Silva (awesome drummer), he has an endorsement of Soultone Cymbals, it's one of the best cymbals I ever heard.

    Greetings from Brazil!

  • wow, great!

  • Do you recommend the Shure PG's ? :-)

  • I sure do! They were very affordable and sound really great. And I like that I was able to easily expand my set by buying more of the mic series online; they were readily available at places like eBay and Amazon. I'm very glad I invested in them - I really like Shure's gear. I use their SE315 in-ear monitors, too, and they're awesome. :D

  • You play such foot tapping, finger snapping, head bobbing, fun stuff! Feel like saying a cheesey line like "you bring the fun into funk" haha but genuinely I really enjoyed it :)

  • Brian! Thanks for the comment - I lol'd. ;)

Glad you enjoy the videos, my friend. More cheesy goodness to come.

  • Seriously, you are adorable!

  • Wow - that's something I rarely hear on YouTube (since 84% of my viewers are men, according to this video's stats), so thanks for that, Sarah! If that's you singing in the "White Rabbit" video, then I say "right back at'cha!" :D

  • blimey.. sick as always

  • A-W-E-S-O-M-E! great derek!

  • Great Sound.

  • sweeeeeeeet! the drums sound great, the resonance is legit! but all your uploads are jazzy. I think it's time to pull out a Dream Theater song, or Tool! haha \m/ keep goin!

  • I can absolutely do a Dream Theater cover - you bet. I did that "Platt Opus" one that was kind of a "prog rock" tune (have you seen that one?), but I have been wanting to do some other stuff, too. The problem is that I'm a Partner Channel here on YouTube, and if I use any copyrighted materials without licenses (read: "covers"), I run the risk of YouTube deleting my channel for non-compliance with the rules...so we'll have to see.

  • @drumology2001 yeah I saw the Platt Opus vid, that was great too! yeah, I uploaded an Anthrax song like last year or something, and apparently it cant be shown in the U.S....the stupid copyright stuff is tricky...

  • That's a compliment by the way!!

  • Well of course it is - Weckl is the man! Lord knows I'm not worthy of the comparison, but I thank you for it, anyways. :D

  • Soudin good Del..............very good infact!

I think you're doing a Dave Weckl on us!!!

  • Thank you! But, uh...why do you always call me "Del"? I don't understand. :\

  • OH NO WAY, YOU HAVE A YOUTUBE CHANNEL!! AND YOU'RE AWESOME! (but I already knew that last part, so I'm more excited about the first). Subscribed.

  • Dude, YES! Ky Burton, ladies and gentlemen! Learn this young man's name - he'll be in your living room before you know it (but not in that creepy late-night-breaking-and-entering sort of way). Thanks for the subscription, Ky - I'm returning the favor, but you gotta' promise me you'll post that sick rap you wrote ASAP! I want to be able to watch it and send it to people. :D

  • nice job ... very good...=) I await your other video!!!

  • I love your playing!! And seeing how happy you are doing all those fills!

One question - what IEM's are you using? Are they isolating well?

    Greetings from Poland!

  • Thanks, Gewsi! I *was* happy - this is such a fun song to play! :D

I use Shure SE315's for my in-ear monitors, and I love them. They're super comfortable, and once you select the right size foam or plastic attachment for your ear canal (they're included), they stay in really well and isolate out live/ambient noise that you don't want to hear, making for a really great listening experience. High ends cuts through, mids are warm, and low end is nice and thick. A great investment, I say. :)

  • @drumology2001 Thanks a lot! I see that se215's have also good recommendations, so I can't wait to check them out!

  • it's really amazin'!!!!!!! that's music!!

  • "Make the metronome your bitch" wise advise from my brother :)

  • a few of quick questions.....

    1. are you playing a samba rhythm on the kick? its hard for me to tell

    2. what kind of batter and resonant heads are you using on your toms and bass?

    3. I'm interested in recording my drumset but know little to nothing about drum mics. What brand/model drum mics are you using in this video?

    Thanks in advance man

  • I'm happy to answer your questions. :)

    1) I'm playing three different patterns in this video: a 'Soca' pattern (0:17 to 0:53), a 'Songo' pattern (0:54 to 1:04), and a Samba (3:36 to 4:06). In the Soca, the bass drum is just playing quarter notes ("four on the floor"), so no Samba pattern in the bass drum until 3:36.

    2) See video's "Show More" tab for this info.

    3) Video's "Show More" tab tells you about this, too. ;)

    Hope that helps! :D

  • @drumology2001 oh i c. Thank you sir, youv been most helpful

  • wow very nice. a lot of those fils remind me of weckl, maybe its the sound of your kit

  • Thanks, Adam! And maybe you hear the Weckl-age because Weckl is one of my biggest influences? I can only hope so. ;)

  • I love to play this tune too, you're great, fluid solid and spicy, as always.

Anyway: Igoe... Tommy.... let me say one thing: "TURN THE COWBELL VOLUME DOWN" ... damn :) All of igoe's tune have this fck metronome cowbell... Who do you think you are, Bruce Dickinson? :)

    Great Derek!

  • Thanks, Paolo! And ROFL on the Bruce Dickinson reference! I didn't mind the cowbell too much. I'm sure they were just trying to be helpful, since there are some tricky turn-arounds in there. :)

  • amazing as always!

  • and man i love that stack!

  • Right?!?!? The first time I heard it, I knew it was going to be my next purchase. :D

  • you've got your own logo on your cymbals? how cool is that!

anyways derek, as always great playing, wish i were as good as you!

  • Pretty boss, right? Soultone does that for people - you just have to send them your logo and get a die made. Then every time you order from them after that, they put it on for you! And thanks for the kudos, my friend. :D

  • it's always a joy listening to you play. I just wish you uploaded more often. Regardless, you are awesome!

  • I wish I did, too! Unfortunately, I have a life outside of my drum studio in my basement, so...gotta' get stuff filmed and edited when I can - here a little, there a little. ;)

  • I always enjoy your videos, your such a smooth player and your kit always sounds insane!!

  • Thank you, Adam. :D

  • Thanks, Sam! Just replied to your FB message. :)

  • Derek you are awesoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooome ! Was waiting for a new video :) always nice to watch you play. I want you to be my drum teacher :( haha!

    -Chloé

  • Chloe, so are yooooooooooooooouuuuuuuu! Thanks for writing, dear! It's always great to hear from you. You want me to be your drum teacher, eh? (Challenge accepted!) I am working on some free lessons for my YouTube channel as we speak. Keep your ear to the ground - new stuff on the way! :)

  • I think I might have said this before... but if I haven't, you should know that you're an amazing inspirational drummer! Great groove and overall smooth playing! Keep flowin'. :)

  • Thank you, Bjorn! Wow, what a nice comment. I'm glad you enjoy my playing so much. :D

  • Sweet groove man, you got nice chops and a really great sound.. its a killer track!

  • You bet it is! When I first heard it, it took me about 2.7 seconds to realize it was going to be my next video track! Thanks for the compliments - glad you enjoyed it. :D

  • dude long time to upload a video right ? omg u are sooo awesome in drumming =D this video got me excited !!!

  • Right on! Thanks! :)

  • O M G !!!

  • You keep great time.

  • Ha, thanks - but I'll give most of the credit for timekeeping to the metronome going throughout the song. ;)

  • @drumology2001 I currently suck with a metronome, too ahead of the beat... annoys the hell outta me.

  • I can sympathize! Learning to play with a metronome can be a real eye opener towards your tendencies with time. Like you, I find that if I'm not really dialed in with my ears, I have a tendency to be on the front side of the beat, too. Nothing but practice can shake you of bad timing habits, so keep working at it. It's a vital skill to be able to keep dead solid time with a metronome. :)

  • You really nailed a beautiful drum sound - everything is is top notch.

Obviously - awesome playing too man - totally pleasure jamming this tonight!

  • Nick! I'm thrilled at the thought of you cranking this up and jammin' out to it! It's just a solid, fun, upbeat piece of music - hard not to like it, regardless of what I played over top of it. Glad you're diggin' it, man. :D

  • Nope, just cymbals with my signature on them. (Slightly different than signature cymbals.) ;)

And thanks for the compliment. :D

  • thanks god for this :D missed watching you play

  • Sorry for that wait, Tyler! I've got some free lessons in the works that I'ma post up here when I'm finished with them, too. Keep your eyes peeled. :)

  • Still smooth and in the pocket as always!! but that metrnome is annoying!! lol or is that a woodblock??

  • Thanks! Yeah, it's a metronome that is built into the backing track already - no way to remove it, so I just had to grin and bear it. After a while, you almost forget that it's there, though. I try to focus on the other stuff going on. :)

  • Yup, fantastic stuff as ever!!

  • Thank you, kind sir. :)

  • have you lost weight?

  • A little bit, yeah! This was filmed a few months ago, and I had started running every morning and I lost about 15 pounds! I've put a few back on over the summer, but am back to running and lifting again and trying to eat healthier - just in time for the holidays, lol. ;)

  • Swingin', daddy! Put on a dark suit and skinny tie, add some swank to that phenomenal show! You got the juice, kid! Keep it up. Sonny

  • How did you get your logo on your cymbals?

  • That's a service that Soultone Cymbals offers for anyone who's interested. I like it because 1) it's pretty cool, and 2) if anyone every tries to jack my cymbals, they'll be caught red handed! :D

  • Great drumming man, keep it up.

  • Thanks! I will. You have my word. ;)

  • Nice to see a new video from u...Keep it up because your an amazing drummer..

  • It's nice to finally put a new one up! Thanks for the compliment. My recording setup has been going through so many changes lately, so just when I think I'm happy with how something sounds/looks, I find some way to make it a little better. Next investment will be better cameras. ;)

  • Thanks for the great comment, James! Glad you enjoyed it, my friend! This track really picks me up, too - I was bobbing my head when I was editing it, but not because of anything I did; the guys on the backing track are *stellar*! They just lay it right down - so much fun to play along to. :D
