It's ironic to me that he cites 'doo-wop' as an influence...I've heard artists make this type of stock comment before....they cite [R&B] as an inluence, though their music sounds nothing like it (and that's why I like it; it's non-traditional)..it's as if they think they have to apologize, or explain away their creativity

@AJtheory The doo-wop, R&B, and primarily girl group influence is especially prevalent in his work with Deerhunter on the Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP, namely the self-titled debut track and Game of Diamonds. It's an immediately accessible influence even to a musical novice's ear, he simply personalizes it and therefore the sounds are characterized by a gravitas his references do not possess. I'm guessing the morosity of his touch upon the classically jubilant doowop style is what eludes you.

I've only heard a couple songs by him ("Walkabout" and "Quarantine"), but I've heard similar comments in other artists' interviews, regarding their 'influences'...I just think his music ("Walkabout" and others I'm sure)

When artists say things, they don't always mean it... yes, he said he was asexual one or two interviews but he also mentioned a boyfriend in an interview with emusic.

The fact is, at least in Bradford's case, human sexuality is just too strange to narrow down to one term.
