  • doing this now :x hope it works

  • @ghez3212 Actually it's a permanent solution in this video.

  • Comment removed

  • I heard that a guy put his graphics card in his oven for a few seconds, that was hilariously funny.

  • i am planning to do it but do you think it will work on Hp probook 4520s? It also has fried GPU.

  • I just saw MacGyver

  • my laptop have same boot problem. black screen but i can hear fan and capslock flashing.

i must warm/heat up my laptop before it can turn on @.@

    anyone can help me?

  • hello my computer is a hp tx1410us, it still working, should i do this to prevent that happen?

also i would like to ask you for a video to tight the rotating or opening screen

    thanks a lot

  • OMG u dnt even need to do all that

    just turn it off

press J K L really hard with the palm of ur hand and turn it on at the same time and it WORKS!! i just did it and im a girl lool

  • @ghez3212 ure d bossssssssss......works like magic fanx.....

  • It works fine now! Had to replace the CMOS battery with a new one and the main battery became corrupted don't know how or why, but overall it has been a success knowing that before this fix it was totally inoperative. Thanks again!

  • my touchsmart tx2 was having the same problem... did everything as told on your video and now the display turns on and there is no blinking lights no more but I'm only getting a black screen with a steady cursor on the upper left corner... any ideas of what may be happening??? Would appreciate any help!

  • took it apart and mess it all up now it's all mess't up taking it apart it's the hardest bit so i would get a professional to do the taking apart bit and to put it all back in bit

Good luck if you are trying!

  • so, attaching penny is not necessary right?

  • @jasonshay2 Thank you very much!!! It worked for me too! Instead of a 150 W bulb I used a 100 W only however I doubled the time to 3-4 minutes and to be sure repeated the process once before building the machine together again. An other change: as I live in Hungary / Europe I had to install an old 1 Forint coin instead of the cent. It is made of 75 % copper ;-)

  • @estudianteHU Update: it is broken again. I think I will try the "heating in the oven" solution someone recommended.

  • THANK YOU X 8688767000000000 :D

  • Thanks for this guide. I have fixed mi lap a few moments ago, it´s a dell xps m1330 with INTEL, yes, it does the blank screen.

If you can recieve any donnations, i will give you some money. Thanks again +)

  • I just did this EXACTLY with my 572/1172 degrees Fahrenheit heat gun from Harbor Freight ($14)

That's the lowest setting it has so I heated it up for about a minute and thirty seconds. Pressed on it for the one minute and let it cool till the board was cool to the touch. Put it all back together and WHAMBAM! Boot screen. If this guy took donations I'd pay him.

    Thanks!

  • Followed this to a tee and got my tx1000 up and running, thanks! Interested to see how long it lasts, I did it on Dec 15 2011, I'll come back and post again if it fails...

  • jasonshay2, Thanks so much for this vid. I repaired my friends tx1000 and saved a lot of time and hassle. Boots up fine now.

  • Thanks so much you saved me so much money and I got my favorite computer back and running wasn't hard at all and all I have left over is 1 screw???

  • I like your approach to the problem

  • note .. instead of using the bulb i used a hair dryer for 2 min ..

  • Thanks man .. i just fix my laptop .. it works really good ..

  • This is continued from my last post. I also used an old penny from 1960, because of the higher copper content (more malleable and conductive . I flattened the penny to about half it's original width by hitting it with a hammer on smooth concrete. One last tip, watch all the other videos of people fixing similar probs. on other laptops. You may get some good ideas. Good luck.

  • Well I'll be damned, it worked. Thanks much for the video. It took me quite a while to take it apart and put it back together, but that's just 'cause I had almost no idea what I was doing. I didn't use a lamp though. I got a heat gun and held a meat thermometer about an inch from the nozzle and adjusted it until the thermometer steadily read 200 degrees fahrenheit. I then held the nozzle about an inch above the board for two minutes. I also added a heat shield that I made from a soda can.

  • This is why I bought a mac

  • @ps3isdasht

    Mac is for fags.

  • @ps3isdasht Note that this video is aimed to save people the money towards laptop repairs, not increase it. :P

(Coming from someone who bought a Mac)

  • @ps3isdasht And you're why I just hackintoshed my Dell, so I don't start watching PC repair videos and bad mouth them when I don't even own one.

  • 1 penny? Out of my price range.

  • post more videos

  • thats why i do not get hp i get dell!!!

  • I am about to attempt this. How long has this fix lasted for you?

  • is the thermal paste realy important and can use something ulse and thank u

  • Used this video one year ago and my laptop is still running with no problems. I used the copper shims and thermal paste, and a heat gun. Did it at work.....people were stopping by and saying "wtf!!!".....but everyone was amazed and impressed when it put it back together and it booted up. I still get asked if that thing's still working, and I am proud to say "Yep!". Thanks for the video. Awesome.

  • Found this video when my friends TX2 died. Didnt take it apart instead I ran a hairdryer with a slot attachment into the opening with the memory modules, after two minutes i tapped on he back and let it cool. Tada one working laptop.

  • @projectzip How long did that fix last?

  • holy crap, it actually worked...

  • Well done on the repair. Interesting technique.

  • @TheLaptopDoctor Number one, that is not on a table, that is on a granite counter-top, which is non-flammable, unless the granite is artificial. Number two, my dad is a firefighter, and the heat from the heat lamp is not significant to start a fire, though tin foil and cardboard is flammable. Last of all, this worked for all these people, so attempt to try it yourself before saying its only temporary. No offense :D

  • WHY YOU SKIP PART WITH REMOVING HARD DRIVE - I NEED IT HOD DID YOU DO THAT?

  • Dangerous repair, the foil over cardboard is a fire hazard. (ask a fireman) and this version is only a temporary solution. There is poor heat distribution between the solderballs and the pads on the GPU using a heat lamp. And you want to do this at the kitchen table?

  • @TheLaptopDoctor Hey, we make ovens out of cardboard boxes with a single layer of foil on the inside of the box, bakes fine at 350F & absolutely no burn through or charring - aluminum is an amazing heat conductor AND heat reflector! Think of the airport firemen in aluminum coated suits...

  • @KJ5J Understood, but those boxes are usually pre-treated with something like boron, or boric acid powder (as a flame retardant).

But regular cardboard was used in this case.

  • Tip top... hat klass funktioniert!

    It worked... thank you!!!

  • i just bought one for 300 bucks, it had just wifi probllems,

i fixed it by simply buying a mini usb wifi adapter and it does not bother me when its plugged in the back usb port, and bought a cooling pad so it will not over heat and cause more poblems to the machine.

    :D.

  • I have tx2000, but my laptop boot (i can hear windows sound log in) , but my screen is black, if i connect another monitor it work good.

    Sometimes the screen turn on.

Sorry if my enlgish is bad.

    Any suggestions?

  • My laptop will only turn on if I have the ac adapter plugged in, but once it boots normally I can still use the battery, but it doesnt boot on the battery alone. recently my laptop has booted on then turns off and then I try to turn it on and it turns off( I guess I have overheated so many times). Just yesterday it came to life and it was night so i just the settings to where it wont sleep, it would just dim the lights. The Next day flip open my laptop and its black screen D:.

  • I have this laptop hp tx1000 with sucking black screen problems but i have solved it when your screen comes back try to install windows 7 or xp i have already installed windows 7 then the screen was rarely died. I hope this will work for you guys. Click like if this steps work.

  • Canadian penny before 1981 would work best consisting of 98% copper. Artic Silver compound is a great option for thermal compound. The key to this fix is to re sit gpu back to the motherboard and fill small gap between gpu and heatsink. The hardest part would be sanding the penny to the right thickness. It would be great if you can find a 100% copper slice of the correct thickness but that will be hard. By completing this fix it allowed me to turn this computer into a low tech gaming computer.

  • Instructions

For best result, sand penny down to half its size just filling gap between gpu and heatsink. Remove the useless thermal foam and compound over gpu and cpu. Re sit the gpu as per video. Than, apply new thermal compound over gpu and cpu and place penny over gpu filling the small gap between the heatsink and gpu. Put computer back together and your computer should work. However, for the first 10 hours try not to operate at maximum efficientcy untill the thermal compound has broken in.

  • The reason for me posting these comments is to help people who is having issue with their tx1000 laptop. After a year and a half of getting black screen of death on this computer I got myself motivated in accomplishing the fix. I applied methods used in this video in collabration with hp manual to take laptop apart.

  • You are here all the professors. NASA jealous of your wit. :)) JUST REPLACE CHIP can solve the problem:)

  • @bendersssr have you tried to replace a GPU or know what is involved?

  • this just happened to my hpdv6t-3000CTO 40 days out of warranty... hp want 350 to fix.... ugh.... my laptop has switchable graphics.. i turned from the intel to the ati card so that i could play a game and 10 minutes later i got bluescreen and the black screen with no boot but leds all on.. smdh so my ati card is fried.. i wish i could swithc back to the intel chip.. atleast that way it will turn on and i just wouldnt turn the ati chip back on again til i got a new motherboard...

  • How long does this fix work for?

  • Also on the penny trick - use a pre-1982 penny (after that year they are copper-plated zinc) & grind it up a bit. I actually burned the oxidation off of it on the kitchen stove (it will darken but don't worry) then flattened it by rubbing on sandpaper - bright & shiny for a very good thermal connection.

  • Worked for me - observed that the solder does not actually melt & re-flow, probably the heat is helping to close micro-cracks. Also didn't have a high watt bulb on hand so planned to use a heat gun. Then, afraid I may end up lifting traces this way, I just used a hair dryer for 3 minutes on high heat, low fan-speed. Booted right up.

  • After watching this video, I'd be truly surprised if this fix lasts. Also, some key elements and tips were left out. Solder will reharden within a couple seconds... you would have to push the chip back into place very quickly after getting it hot enough. Also, a penny is made mostly of zinc, not copper, therefore it is a lousy heatsink. Arctic Silver 5 was used in the video, but I would recommend using a heatsink adhesive instead of a heatsink paste to firmly attach the heatsink to the GPU.

  • So how long do we wait to turn the computer back on to see if it works???

  • I have followed the same. it worked just after the fixed. but later after two days it is same as earliar stage and not booting now.

I did used feviqjuck instead thermal conductor to stick a copper coin . (was'nt aware how it get the thermal conductor.)

Any other suggestion for me (may i try again the same procedure )

  • why did you film this there, with all the people around lol I'm not making fun just thought it was odd

  • Thanks for the great video but after I did the repair it now just beeps 3 times and on the lower left of the screen with the 3 lights, instead of like normal booting where the power light is solid on and the cd-looking light (drives I'm guessing) is mostly on, only the power light blinks. So uh...what now?

  • (Email to board of directors of HP) bod@hp.com

To the 400,000+ that have had this issue I recommend flooding the ceo's of HP. I have sent an email and I hope that all of you do the same. It may not change our problem but it will send a statement that we are sick of being sold lemon products

  • update, someone from HP just called me and offered me to 1/2 price repair (which was 178 something for me) or if I buy a new HP they will give me a free warranty. i told them no because I can buy a new computer for a little more than that and wont have the same problems. good luck to all of you with the same problem, emailing does work if you want to complain and get it fixed by HP.

Thank You very Much,

  • Hmm. I didn't know Jason Biggs was good with computers :P

Seriously, look at him at the end of the video. Totally looks like him (in my opinion).

  • I have the same problem with my computer except that it is the Tx2000 series. I am wondering if this fix is the same for my computer? Also Im not a computer person so I am a bit confused on what happens after the heating of the chip, the part that involves the towel.

  • @dprieto16 So I fixed my tx1000 six times already. Always the wifi will go first, then the screen.

I did some testings and believe I found a way to avoid this to happen again. After you are done using your comp; TURN it off (do not put it on stand-by or sleep). Then immediately close the lid and place it upside down (laptop sitting on the lid ) until the next time you need to use it. I will make a video demonstration soon.

  • @dprieto16 Since it's the chip which is slightly deattached, the towel is used to push the pre-heated solder into the chip. This re-establishs the chip into the mother board and allows the computer to boot up as it used to.

  • Worked like a charm! I used a 250W heat lamp, (high Wattage floodlights are rare these days). Filed down a 1971 penny until it was flat for better heat transfer. Applied silver heatsink compound , (an absolute MUST). Go to HP for disassembly instructions. Good luck!

  • guys here is a funny sory of me h lol first thing in the moringing i opend my comeputer it was jus black screen then i raged for alo hours and hen i was night time i go calmer and tried o fix it i loo at the bottm and therexs was no batery and forgo that the battery was left beside he compuer and never new i was an idoit

  • worked =D thanks man glad i accidentally found this video.

  • @mageguy3 hp told me it would cost me $1,500 to fix the computer. Turns out $10 worth of thermal compound and a penny would do the trick =D. thanks

  • This is a real public service, thank you!. I have already replaced the motherboard once on my son's TX1000 once, and was just about ready to chuck it, when I came across your fix. This is brilliant, right down to adding the heatsink. I have yet to perform the procedure, and will comment on it once done.

  • @murrayhill11355 how did you replace the motherboard? did you have to purchase it seperately, if so, where? Thanks.

  • @TheMrJaggasingh12 There are a number of sources for purchasing a moboard around the net. I don't recall exactly where I did as it was a couple of years ago. You can find disassembly instructions on HP's site. Why do you want to replace it? If for reasons other than the detachment issue, I'd advise installing the heatsink described in the video anyway. Also make sure you use the heatsink compound he described. Mine just arrived today. I will comment back here after I attempt the repair

  • @murrayhill11355 My thermal Compound arrived yesterday. I was going to fix it using this video, but it would've been handy to have another new motherboard, just incase. I'll too comment here after my attempt. Thanks for the reply.

  • @murrayhill11355 This fix worked. Had to wait for a few hours to turn it on. Windows didn't boot properly so I installed linux on it.

  • This fix DOES work, I fixed a TX2 with the same problem, but I used a very hot hair drier, and the problem is fixed.

It is advisable to add copper to the cooling duct and use a good heatsink paste to ensure it doesn't happen again.

But thanks for that, I have a VERY happy customer

  • I'll pay you $150.00 to fix mine! pleeeeaaaazzzz!!!

  • Dude I have booked a place for you in Heaven.. This video helps.. THANK YOU

  • all I di was wrap my lptop in a heavy blanket start the boot process (press pwoer button) wait for the clik (of hard drive) and 2 second fan sound, wrpped computer in the blanet let it set for an our after the first half hour the fan came on, i let it set snother half hour, then uncovered , let it cool over night and in the morning pressed power button and viloa I have my laptop back!.. not to find out how long the fix will last!

  • some of the people making comments say this fix is only temporary, how long did the fix last or is the fix still good till this day?

  • Thank you very much for the video Jason... worked very fine with me... you have saved me guy...

    Greets from Brazil. :)

  • I have a touchsmart tx2-1025 that was having the non booting blackscreen issue and hasn't been functional for about a year. I tried this fix today and my comp is now booting and running. I did not use penny or the thermal compound. Just a 120w regular light bulb for about 6 minutes and pressed for 1 minute. Also on booting i applied pressure to jkl; row of keys and it booted the second time. Thanks for this, I'm so happy!

  • Thank you :)

You're the Robin Hood against HP scamming :)

  • whats up with electronic these days always be over heating? even the ps3.... and all can fix same procedre by heating up the cpu/motherboard..... fire on fire..... heat on heat.

  • How do you get the case off? I have removed every screw that I can see and the computer won't come apart. The key board seems to be stuck on the left side.

  • @jcmcccjc /watch?v=musu759LsT4

  • my tx1000 blowed after just running rise of nations, and i payed 120 dollars to replace the motherboard :S regreting myself now. Does it runs games after that fix with the cooling? is it secure?

  • lol thats aswesome maan! I have the same problem and ima try this after finishing my dam final. Thanks for benefit other people man ^_^you're the best!

  • anyone got thermal glue laying around? sigh....

  • Precision Division specializes in circuit-level laptop motherboard repair. Repairs are performed at a computer controlled dark infrared rework station and monitored by continuous ESD event detection. BGA glues are chemically removed prior to rework.

  • Hey man, I'm from Brazil.

I was selling my tx's parts of the when I saw your video.

Then I made the procedure and the problem was gone.

Thank you very much for the video. You're the man!

  • Yo man you helped me so much!

  • Ну, братан, выручил! скока я с этой херью мучился, не посчитать

  • hahahaha to reach solder meltinig point you need to reach 240c there is no way on earth you're going to reach that with a light bulb from underneath in 2 minutes, your fix simply wraps the motherboard plastic "just little flex" that's all it does thus it's temporary. but good tip for those really old laptops, its better and safer than heatgun.

  • 15 people bought a mac

  • You are an awesome guy for putting this YouTube. Worked first try.

    Thanks

  • @thewashman2 for short term, don't get over exited :-) back'up your data before it dies again at least.

  • Muchos thanks....viejo...se te agradece desde Bolivia.......

    thanks friend......bye

  • Gracias Hermano, me funciono soy de panama, yo lo Hice con un secador de pelo durante 15 minutos, siguiendo las instrucciones del video.

  • Thanks! This really worked .

  • I did this procedure AGAIN on my computer... Never buying HP ever again.

I can take apart this computer in less than 5 mins now... That's f'ing sad.

  • do i need to wait a couple days

  • Also, what year of a penny would i need to use?

  • Would i really need to use the thermal conductant glue?

  • ok ive found the same answer on a spanish site, so i guess this is it, as fot others... i suggest buy a basecooler instead of sending it to some "technitian" who will charge you more over 300dlls and doing the same spendin 1cent .. ¬¬ stop wining.. this is why NVIDIA needs a powerful coolin system... sheesh.. why didnt i think of that before? ><"

  • This fix worked for me. Thanks for documenting it!

  • i done it and i really hope it works!!

  • This fix works also for tx2. I did it on my tx2-1024ca.

Should we open a Face book group to unite against HP ?

  • @mc12121 YES cus i spent $900 on a laptop that broke in a year, the screen just goes out? really hp?

  • it has nothing to do with nvidia, nothing at all, nvidia supplys the chipset, HP puts it all together, HP puts the plans in motion the cooling system is horrid, , the fact people blame nvidia is just stupid, BLAME HP

  • The cardboard is unnecessary. if the laptop has worked so far, then it must be used to running on 90C in room temperature conditions, so little heat spread wont do much damage. because if you cras the GPU like that (happened here too) your runing over 90C for a while. its not hard, basically jsut run any newer game and its either runing at 90c+ or crashes becuase of overheat.

  • thanks alot... this fix works great.

  • hey.... i did this trick but my prob still not solve.... do you have any idea

  • @hazly92

I was not able to get it working the first time. But after a couple of tries: heating it for a longer time (5 minutes with a hairdryer) and pressing really hard I got it to work. Just have patience and try again.

  • Try a copper shim instead of a penny. Comes with thermal paste free. Only $5. Search for "tx1000 copper shim" on ebay.

  • i love how you dumb motherfuckers think its nvidia's fault that the chip overheats

its HP's fault for making a horrid cooling system

  • @LordZigmalulu It is true that hp cooling system must be the worst cooling system ever created, however it is partialy nvidias fault too, for making the laptop graphic cards crash on heating conditions which sohuldnt happen and doesnt happen on desktops.

  • thanks to show this video I'm gonna try as soon as possible

  • This may be a little late, but there's a Nvidia Settlement (google it) and a new attempt to change the conditions to that settlement - google fair nvidia settlement

  • Thank You!!!!

it took longer to dis-assemble than to make the 'reflector', make the repair and re-assemble. But Well worth it!

    Landis.

  • What about suing HP for their refusal to admit they ripped people off? The NVIDIA class action settlement allows you to trade the tx for a goofy netbook. HP needs to be sued big time for this!! where are the lawyers?

  • thank you for this video. i have had computer broken for two years and fixed it today. without this it would still be broken.

  • This has worked for me 6 times already (tx1000)

I just wrote a letter to the ass#@&$! of HP board of directors.

You guys should do the same.

Tell them You Will NEVER buy an HP product again.

  • I have a TX2 and this worked. I was about to buy a new Motherboard, Thanks

  • i haven't tried this yet, but am going to, for sure.

If you're ever in Detroit, i'd like to buy you and your wife dinner..

    Landis.

  • Hi I have the TX2 but with an ATI HD3200 gpu. having the exact same problem could this fix work as well

  • @bbigirwa yeah, worked for me...with hairdryer for bout 2 min...

  • anyone knows if those steps can work in Hp Pavilion dv6000 ? or any type of pavilion dv ?cause the typical of pavilions dv6000 gpu wont workk like this onee

  • Before you apply new thermal compound, you are supposed to scrape off the old thermal compound, and use rubbing alcohol, and a Q tip to clean off the old thermal compound residue.

  • is this penny equal to euro's 5cents?? and what else could i use for warming up the chip? coz i don't have such a light!! thnx!!!

  • so what coin should i use ... the penny or the quarter. im going to fix mine in a few days and i want the fix to be permanent

  • @keepsakebaby Just to let you know, this is just a temporary fix.

A penny works fine, as long as it conducts heat (older is better).

  • The penny didn't work for me. Pennys are made of zinc and don't have the heat properties of copper. I ended up using a quarter which is 90% copper and that seems to work just fine.

  • @digital951 You'd have to use a penny that was made pre-1982. Before that date they were pure copper.

  • Same issue with tx2000z. And of cause HP/NVIDIA does not acknowledge that they have a design issue. What a scam...

  • I had this black screen problem; I heated gpu w/hairdryer and plastic bottle then did the same stuff. It works, and costs only a few bucks - i bought paste and copper plate though the last one was not in use. Thanks for the information!

  • @idlhero Where do you get the paste and copper plate?

  • @domash at the shop near my house in Moscow, Russia. Though you don't need copper plate, just take a coin which contains copper.

  • Hi I have the Tx2 Laptop, yesterday after I turn it on and I have the same problem. Black screen, flashing Cap Lock and end 1 every second. Anyone here that have experience the same problem and able to fix it? with this method? If you are in Minneapolis area please let me know, I willing to pay for help fixing it.

  • Approximated duration for Overhaul or forever? greetings and thanks for the reply.

  • i did all this and put the computer back together but now when i turn the computer on, it comes on for less than a second and turns off, do you know what could be causing this?

  • @MarkThisHour the gap between the heat sink and chip is about .0025", which is too small for the penny. The pressure from the heat sink can tilt the penny, which kills heat transfer. Take a close look at the penny after screwing the heat sink to the cpu. I had the exact same problem. If you can't get the penny flush to the video chip substitute it with a .0024" copper shim. This is about half the thickness of a penny. If you happen to "find" an altered penny , that works too.

  • @BSCOTT1284 no im talkin about the actual power not just the video, its the entire computer thats turning on and then off right away, thanks for spending the time to write that huge solution tho, thats cool of ya haha

  • @MarkThisHour when the CPU or GPU reach a bios specified temperature, the computer will be forced into a shutdown to prevent the components from becoming heat damaged. There are a few problems that could cause an immediate shut down, but since you mostly messed with the heatsink, I would suggest looking there first. Maybe you used too much or too little thermal paste on the CPU or GPU, or something isn't seated properly. BTW, the penny is a temp fix, b/c it can x-fer heat from the CPU to GPU.

  • thanks alot. it's work
