Jean Shepard , the great storyteller (A Christmas Story), was a big fan of Spike Jones. During his years as a late-night radio guy on WOR (NYC) Jean use to mix Spike's songs into his tales of life growing up in Indiana during the depression.
Well, folks . . . speaking of the gifted/cantankerous/my fellow atheist Zappa . . . check out "Spindle's" post of "Cocktails For Two" . . . and my comment on it . . . Gary in Arizona . . . courtesy of Vic561.
Wow! Amazing all the FZ comments I see on a Spike Jones video but that's so cool! I'm a lifetime FZ fan too! Never saw FZ in concert but I have seen Dweezil quite a few times in concert and even got a couple autographs from him too! :)
have'nt heard Spike Jones since i was i kid in the 50s & 60s...I think it's brilliant so many people still like & remember him..You would'nt hear them on radio now threre's to many people up them selves........
interesting to see zappas name here. I'm an artist who makes cut and paste music. I've been referred to as reminding people of frank zappa, and today spike jones. So fascinating to find out about this percussive comedian and the links in peoples mind to zappa.
In the day... jones and others would meet at an after hours club after their gigs were over and play just for the fun of it... that was how the City Slickers got their start.
As a result, a new genre of music was created, but not reccognised for many years... Spike Jones is the father of Firehouse Jazz.
The best way to understand who Frank Zappa is/was is probably to just experience his music. Like Jones and Yankovic, Zappa was known for interjecting humor into his music, while traversing an enormous range of styles and genres (although Zappa's humor was often more bizarre). He was an excellent guitarist himself, and he was known to surround himself with some of the best musicians in the business. Check out his earlier material with the Mothers Of Invention and his later solo stuff.
Very well explained! I would go as far as saying that Zappa was a genius. Just check many of his interviews.
Also: he was fan of cacophony (ill-fitting instrumentation). His music was extremely demanding and of highest quality. His song texts were very often an analysis and criticism of modern life. Zappa was daring and he wasn't afraid of being disgusting here and there (f. ex. Dinamo Hum) or talking about bizarre businessa ideas (Montana). His guitar solos were awesome - I worship this man.
I love it....Spike Jones being compared to Wierd Al and Frank Zappa. I have to go with the first choice, I think Zappa was really outrageous but a genius.Wierd Al is just for the fun of it.
@funnyman141 IT WOULDN'T BE PLAYED ON THE RADIO!!!! ahahhaha you gotta be kidding! radio stations and mtv nowadays wouldn't even care for anything that sounds like this at all! that's where youtube comes in! we can enjoy this old music without having to sit thru stupid pop and modern rap crap!
Does anyone have the lyrics?

I wouldn't call Zappa a genius, maybe a good guitarist. I think a lot of his fame really came from just the people he surrounded himself with.

BTW, Spike Jones was HOT with his shirt off. (I'm a girl.)
