Well to answer questions, #9 is being restored in Palisades co for display in Breckenridge. It could possibly fired up in Breck and rolled back and forth once and a while. #9 will be the first C&S loco in breck since the 69 and 58 pulled up the rails as they headed up over boreas pass. For once a former Denver South Park and Pacific locomotive will be in a town that it commonly served. This is a fact, the #9 did run on the loop during the C&S days but not often, much more common on the sp line
Narrow Gauge locomotives were proportioned differently than standard gauge locomotives, essentially taking the cab and boiler of a standard gauge locomotive and plopping it onto the running gear of a frame for narrow gauge track. This is more obvious on #9 than it is on #12, so maybe thats why it may look odd compared to a standard gauge steamer.
trust me it's real. What's most interesting is that this engine isn't working well right now and is in the shop as of earlier this summer. I hope the new gtown loop is able to get their gear running for 2009.
Any reason given for why this engine might not make it. I've always been suspicious that it might be either underpowered or simply has a boiler that is too far gone. this has happened at some other railroads as well including the mid-continent railroad in wisconsin dells, wi.
well from what i hear the F**Ked up the restorations and did not do it the right way in the first place. Instead the cut corners and that, so in reality it was not suppose to run without some more work done to it but in stead they half assed it and it died after the one and only season it was used in.
@dcnelson1167 It is on Display at the rotary snow plow park in Breckenridge on a long term lease in return for brecks 111. Brecks 2-8-0 111 is much bigger and C&S #9 is tired and in a beat up condition. They ran it with a cracked cylinder saddle which you can imagine got only worse along with the boiler. At least it will be preserved in Breck under a shelter rather than on a spur rusting away.
@btomimatsucunard Doubtful 111 will ever return to Breck, History Colorado now owns it and is restoring it for the loop. The agreement was History Colorado would take ownership of 111 if Breck got a locomotive in return. Instead of restoring #9 and beating it to death, they swapped it with Breck for the much larger 111. Although History Colorado still owns the #9, it is on "long term loan" to Breck, aka permanent display. The good news is, the last C&S 2-6-0 will be fully preserved.
@dcnelson1167 my dad is the conductor on this and engine 9 has been shipped off and never will run again. although, this is terrivle :(, we are getting a new steam engine number 42 it sounds good :)
Yes, the #9 was stored on Morning Star Spur for 16 years before being pulled off and "restored". Is there no sound with this video, or am I just missing something?
Sadly, there is no sounds. I took this video in 20 second segments on an old Fuji 101 Digital Camera - very low resolution and features. I couldn't resist taking these movies - My wife and I were disappointed we had missed the last train and decided to hang around the yard for a while. I was shocked to see Engine #9 running and did my best to shoot this footage. I have been very disappointed to see how difficult it has been to keep these engines running.
The #9 has sat forlornly outside the enginehouse since April, and most likely won't be running anytime soon. She is in worse shape now than she was sitting on Morning Star Siding. I had the good fortune to be able to be a Brakeman/Conductor during the 2nd half of the 2006 season, when #9 was THE steam engine running. It was a treat to see her running again, but a shame to watch her being mistreated constantly.
No sounds - this video was shot with a very basic camera with a 20 second movie function. I used Microsoft's home video editor to piece this together. I didn't get to ride the Georgetown Loop when I shot this video because I was late for the last train.
Berks475: I am not sure whether this is the engine on the morning star siding. However, one point of clarification is needed to my original comments on the engines: The file starts with Engine #12 which has been in service a while and then later Engine #9 comes out of the roundhouse for a run. This was really an amazing event to watch and completely by luck.

@southparkline1 So will the #9 be returned to the georgetown loop and fully restored when the #111 is returned to Brecks?

Is this the same engine that was on the morning star siding?
