Notice when he turns the wheel the platform tilts opposite. He feels his body pulling to the outer edge. I imigine the illusion is botched a little bc the room is used as a reference point, but this is very old technology.

the reason the chair moves about so much is to simulate acceleration using gravity. when you drive a real car you seat does not move about like that because its not trying to simulate acceleration while being stationary.

Concluding: If You were sitting in this simulator in a dark room, not knowing where any points of reference (like room corners) are located in space, You would get a feeling that You are fixed in relation to space around You and You feel forces similar to forces a real driver would feel. You wouldn't know that You are tilting.

How stupid people have to be not to understand that all these simulator movements are to simulate forces affecting driver... i.e. when You accelerate, You are pushed into the seat, it is simulated by gravity here. You are tilted back, gravity pulls You into the seat... It is not about the movement of simulator in relation to the room... it is about gravity simulating forces affecting driver.

To achieve better result, room should be dark.

The movements of the chair are rather exaggerated. They probably meant this exaggeration for arcade usage. But I'd hope they'd fix such technology for home usage (as if this'd EVER be). But this would work for a game where I'm in the cockpit of an X-Wing, joining D2Kprime in an online co-operative dogfight against TIE fighters, using autostereoscopic HD displays projecting the game in glassesless 3D glory!
