Just watched this Film! I thought I was depressed before I watched it. Now I know a hole new level of misery. If I had someone here to help me kick my chair away I would throw the rope. :)
@davidmartinsvideos I had initially wondered this as well upon my first viewing of the video. It seems that he's so reluctant to let her leave. I don't think it's ever explained, but I would imagine it had something to do with the fact that she started to wander off and get into dangerous situations (like being out on the highway in the freezing cold). I would imagine that he figured it was safer for her. That and there would be no film if she wasn't committed haha.
@DavidGomezy i think u missed my point. i wasn't talking about the film, i was talking about people in general in real life out side the film, who say it all the time. It's a good line to have in the film because the person who's saying that is just the kind of person who'd always say that, and that's what people really say. And yeah, it's a good line to have in the movie, but i'm tired of hearing it from pple outside the movie in real life.

@daisybell4 she had Alzheimer's Disease. she loses her grip on time, and who loves them, she's lost.. i dont want to tell you anymore becase its such a great film.
read the screen play 1st, then watched the movie. as great as this film is, it didn't compare to the experience i had in reading the screenplay. such a poignant/powerful love story. too bad more ppl aren't aware of it...
Polley has a keen sense of how to develop the emotional side of the story, and her eye for detail is impeccable... this is a great movie that i've finished watching at
Watched it yesterday in the German TV. Wonderful movie with great actors. On the one hand damn sad, but also with kind of a happy end... But I'm not really sure about that, since the movie is very confusing sometimes, guess thats intended...
I really want to see this. I've been a huge fan of Gordon Pinsent since watching The Shipping News, there's something really warming about the guy. Perhaps it's because I come from Cornwall and the Newf'nland accent is very similar.
I just saw this on DVD, it is a good movie about love and the devotion a man has to the woman he has spent his life with. She has alzheimers and is slowly slipping away from him.
im not much into these movies but this is one of the good ones. i woulnt even class it as a "chick flick" either.. there isnt really much romance in it at all. its just an all around good movie.
God i can relate to this movie so well.......am so blessed to be working among people suffering from alzheimers and dementia...........its just a wonderful feeling.......
When you consider the fact that this was the first film by someone who is not even 30 yet (considering the topic of the film and that some of the actors had been acting for longer than Sarah Polley has been alive), it makes the film all the better. I hope that she keeps making more films such as this.
Remember the nurse said that Fiona could "come back" and then disapear again very quickly. Who knows how long that lasted before she left again. As a woman, I don't know why Grant did what he did, but maybe it was more of a physical thing, and maybe he was preparing to have to "move on" as her disease progressed. I loved this film. One of the best films I have seen.
Yes you're right it's one of the best. I like the open ending by the way. Could you you tell me what other best films you saw since you like this one .
omg i watched dis movie n i cryed T_T!! itis sad dat after 45 years of marriage, u cant remember shiit!!! gosh =(!! but i ddnt get da end =S can someone explained it to me? did fiona n his husband got back together or wat T_T?
Julie Christie deserved and Oscar tie with Marion Cotillard! She was oscar--worthy for this too! She is a lady, even with her messed-up hair and far away looks... such a great composition...
Another Great Canadian film is Joshua Jacksons new film ONE WEEK. There are free screenings available on oneweek'dot'ca/screenings for Halifax, Winnipeg, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and Victoria. It's one of Josh's best movies to date and he's awesome in it!!!
i liked this movie mainly because it was through the eyes of the husband since women are usually the caregivers. He had to deal with her slipping away and not cut and run and find a bimbo. Instead he stayed.
It was by far one of the top 3 movies of all time that is Canadian. Kleenex made a few cents off me. Or I think it could have been scotties or Royale...
I haven't watched this film yet but I would like to. I have the book which features the short story this film is based on. It's called The Bear Came Over The Mountain by Alice Munro.
My Grandma died of Alzheimer's on October 19th, 2007 - I just started watching this movie tonight, and it's breaking my heart, but also teaching me what my Grandpa had to go through. He's still here, and is still pretty broken. He was her caretaker mostly. I came up to find the trailer to send to my Aunt so she could see it. It is so far, an incredible movie. And Julie Christie is a gorgeous woman, and an absolutely AMAZING actress, her Mother also died of Alzheimers. Rest In Peace Mema!! Luv u!
I was given a paper topic on Alice Munro's "The Bear Came Over the Mountain" and while I was searching for some secondary sources, I came across this film. It seems pretty interesting although I must say it seems a tad different from the short story itself.
I'm studying English Philology so I'd be ashamed of myself if I didn't. The more you get to know people, the more you realise how little you know about them. :) Same goes for Europeans who criticise countries overseas, knowing little or poo about them.
LaMontagne and Young did the vocals? I made some reasearch. The author of the music is Jonathan Goldsmith. I can't wait getting a copy of that soundtrack.
I agree. Marion Cotillard was outstanding as well, but subtle performances are often overlooked which is a shame. Cotillard's performance was a little over the top (which wins Oscars...)
i personally think that cotillard deserves her award. she displayed versatility in her role... as a teenage girl to a middle-aged diva to an old auntie.
this has always been the criteria for best actress: versatility. you look at the recent past history of best actress winners and you should be able to see this trend.
Olympia Dukakis looks exactly the same as she did in Moonstruck. That's kind of strange. I haven't seen it yet, but Julie Christie looks fearless here.
They're making progress on curing it, but the first step to curing it is understanding it. It's a very peculiar, confusing disease.
And yes, I wish too that there will be a cure. This disease, specifically early-onset Alzheimer's, runs rampant in my family, so there is a very good chance this could happen to me as early as 30 years old.

The race for the oscars for best actress is definetely between Cotillard and Christie. They both won the golden globes, Christie won the sag while Cotillard won the bafta.Plus all that the oscars tend to favor actor who play real life people or people with a mental or pysical illness.
(Examples- angelina jolie, tom hanks, al pachino won for playing a person with a psycial or mental problem while jamie fox, robert deniro, and reese witherspoon won for playing feal life people.)
I had to watch this movie for one of my nursing classes. It's amazing!!! I cried all the way through! It's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Very REAL
Not seen this movie, but I really want to see Julie Christie's performance, because I can't believe that it could conceivably beat Marion 'powerhouse' Cotillard in 'La Vie en Rose'. Still, I'm open to the possibility...
Yeah, I also watched the BAFTAs. Have you seen La Vie En Rose? To portray such a complicated character at so many stages in her life, and to do it so perfectly and intelligently... She's an incredible actress. I know who deserves the oscar and I don't even have to see this film.
just saw the film, very good, didn't expect that ending though. still good stuff. was really looking for the song in the preview, and now i know, thanks brandtatiu.
It's a movie without an end...use your imagination, listen to KD Lang singing Helpless by Neil Young also of Canada where the film was made. I swore I'd neaver tear-up over a movie, this film touched me as no film has ever done! Totally awesome to say the least!
Really impressive work by Sarah Polley, by the look of the trailer. That's great that she branched out and trying new things, and really good as an actress too.
One of the truly touching films I've seen lately! Beautifully acted; rings so true and we all know somebody in that situation, don't we.... Gives us strength too and a forgiving heart. Heartbreakingly beautiful!
this is what would have happened if Gatsby had gotten Daisy....

this has always been the criteria for best actress: versatility. you look at the recent past history of best actress winners and you should be able to see this trend.

pinsent is quite fab here

Olympia Dukakis looks exactly the same as she did in Moonstruck. That's kind of strange. I haven't seen it yet, but Julie Christie looks fearless here.

I saw La vie en rose in which Cotillard is great. I just needed to see the trailer to consider Julie Christie's perfomance better than Cotillardd's

are you mad?! Marion is a million times better even though julie is really good!

seeing your love one leaving you because of that forget-everything illness (sorry, i forgot the name)... is extremely sad.
i wish one day that there'll be a cure for this. so that we all will forever be able to hold the lasting and sweet memories that we cherish the most.

The illness you're thinking of is Alzheimer's.

(Examples- angelina jolie, tom hanks, al pachino won for playing a person with a psycial or mental problem while jamie fox, robert deniro, and reese witherspoon won for playing feal life people.)

true that, the race for best actress is between cotillard or christie, it would be an upset if neither of them wins.

Julie Christie is winning, the BAFTA never predicts Oscar outcomes.

I had to watch this movie for one of my nursing classes. It's amazing!!! I cried all the way through! It's one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Very REAL

Julie Christie seems depressing here. I hope Cotillard, Blanchett, Page or Linney win- THANK YOU!

the politics of the film can be that betrayal should be as natural as can be.

Not seen this movie, but I really want to see Julie Christie's performance, because I can't believe that it could conceivably beat Marion 'powerhouse' Cotillard in 'La Vie en Rose'. Still, I'm open to the possibility...
xACertainRomancex 4 years ago
It's already beating her, didn't you watch the SAGS and the Golden Globes? Please, Julie Christie is a lock for the win.
deanriam 4 years ago
Yeah, I also watched the BAFTAs. Have you seen La Vie En Rose? To portray such a complicated character at so many stages in her life, and to do it so perfectly and intelligently... She's an incredible actress. I know who deserves the oscar and I don't even have to see this film.
xACertainRomancex 4 years ago
I've seen both, there's a reason Christie is winning, don't talk if you haven't seen it.

just saw the film, very good, didn't expect that ending though. still good stuff. was really looking for the song in the preview, and now i know, thanks brandtatiu.

Gordon Pinsent needs to get much more recognition for his acting. HE is the one that had me in tears throughout the film!

One of the truly touching films I've seen lately! Beautifully acted; rings so true and we all know somebody in that situation, don't we.... Gives us strength too and a forgiving heart. Heartbreakingly beautiful!
