  • I believe prayer has a function irrespective of spirits and gods- to concentrate the mind on achievement of an outcome. I might pray like this: "We pray that we can protect ourselves in battle, and defend our position from capture." This kind of prayer probably reaches to subconscious levels and effects split second battle decisions.

    It's a non-spiritual prayer I suppose.

  • Do you tell a madman that he is mad and expect him to become sane?

The world dosn't work like that, yet people insist on pushing their views on others and expect them to believe it. It's insane.

If I managed to convince 10 people that ''Jack and the Beanstalk'' was real, and told them to convince other people, and my only evidence was the story book itself, it still does not make it TRUE or REAL... just because Religion is a popular and ''acceptable'' form of insanity, it's still not REAL...

  • I believe that I am responsible for what I do as an individual of free will.

I look at what my fellow human beings of different points of view are saying to eachother........ it sounds pretty hateful.

well, whatever hate is being spurned between them, I want no part in it.

instead of sucumbing to the hate, malice, and spite of the hypocrits and of the evil of the self-centered and self-serving, I will sit and meditate so that i'm spiritually rested for the dark times ahead. "ooooommmmmm."

  • Dear god, if you exist, then protect me from those who come in your name.

  • prayer is the most useless thing

  • @AtheistPhilosophy I am not suggesting that anybody should say a prayer, only that if somebody demands that you say a prayer here is an alternative.

  • isn't "the atheist prayer" an oxymoron...???

  • @danfourdeals Read the description.

  • This is really very good. Very good.

  • You got it!

  • Humans look for patterns, it is logical for us that there must be a beginning, a creator, a mother or father like we have... that does not make it so, quantum physics operate almost completely outside what we would call logical.

what annoys me with christians, is that they defend a deist point of view, while being a theist... they force human logic onto a god who created all, but ignores following that logic further to explain the origins of said god. why? well go figure, makes no sense to me

  • The best book on the subject:

    The God Delusion

    by

    Richard Dawkins

  • yes a creator who created himself, because that totally makes sense.

  • Bullshit.

  • wanna try again? picture 13.5 billion years in your young 18 year old mind. see what that does for you!

  • Actually if you read Richard Dawkins' book The Greatest Show On Earth, you can see EXACTLY how our unique cells evolved over millions of years.

  • Your statement assumes Atheists all accept a Big Bang created "the complicated and unique cells we are made of" which is untrue and therefore arrogant presumption.

A "wonderful creator" would not have given us arthiritis, cancer, STDs, the human botfly, Ebola, influenza, tapeworms, cot death, meningitis or earthquakes or a million other unpleasant things...so I can only assume if there is a creator he or she isn't very good or just doesn't care.

  • who the fuck are you praying to? Im annoyed that there is this emerging type of atheist that has to act all fucking spiritual and in a way Religious.....Atheism is not a religion....its the ABSENCE of one.

  • Nobody. Don't get annoyed, educate yourself. Read the page linked in the description or indeed a couple of other comments on here. It is not a prayer to anybody or anything. It is a parody of a prayer to deliver when somebody assumes that as a well-behaved white person you must obviously be a Christian and would therefore be willing to lead the group in prayer without for a moment considering whether you actually believe in their or any other gods.

  • @MartinJWillett Do what I do i just bow my head and wait for them to finish they all know I'm an atheist they know I'm not praying but by bowing my head I show respect for their beliefs. We all get along great!!

  • @123456wasp Do you respect their beliefs? I don't. I just respect them as people enough not to make a scene - but if I was asked to say a prayer, if somebody had crassly assumed that I was Christian just because I'm white and don't have tattoos, then perhaps I would try to give this prayer.

  • @MartinJWillett I would never lead them or say a prayer period.Cause I don't believe in God so saying a prayer seems insane too me.They seem insane to me!But I will bow my head in respect for them and their believes but nothing more!

  • @yakitoriPB haha be very annoyed. Are we wrong not to meet your preconceived notions or are we evil?

  • @rodneyhatch56 There is no WE in atheism. My atheism is different than yours. My point is why is there a "gathering" or "congregation" of atheist that seem to keep acting like there is a need to share in fellowship. I could give a rats ass what you believe. I dont believe in god...do you? Great...who the fuck cares what you believe in. Why do you speak in your believe as in "we"....and my notions are not "preconcieved"....they are based on OBSERVATION. As is my opinion of religion.

  • I have no idea what that means but why should a believer find it offensive for somebody not to believe what they believe and be prepared to express it? Are you offended by other religions? If you are offended by atheism why should you not be offended by all people with a different view? It is not considered acceptable these days to be seen to be offended by other religions, it should not be acceptable to be offended by the expression of atheist views either.

  • "There's no worship in atheism, there's nothing to worship and no faith or dogma. "

Then, unless this is satire, there really isn't the need for this prayer. It's like calling yourself a devout atheist, it doesn't make a lot of sense.

  • The prayer is there for people who are called upon to lead prayers when people see they are white, well behaved and capable of stringing a sentence together and assume that they must therefore be Christian. That's its only function. It was commissioned for that purpose. Follow the link in the description to see why I was asked to compose it.

  • It doesn't discount the fact that making an atheist prayer is illogical. Prayers aren't as simplified as you make them out to be, they are meant to be directed at a higher form of life. Regardless of whether that being exists, the definition remains solid.

  • Read the thing, or listen. "Let us" begins every line. It is an address to the company, to those who thought they were about to join in a prayer. It is not addressed to any "higher power", it is a political speech not a religious prayer but its tone, delivery, length and some of its phrasing is deliberately reminiscent of a prayer.

There is no way this prayer would be used except in public consciously as a substitute for a public religious prayer. It is not a prayer you can say by yourself.

  • So you crafted a piece of work intending to offend those who hold religious beliefs.

Direct quote, though not your words - "I would like to conduct a prayer that they will find as repugnant as the ones they give! "

if you are actually trying to change someones point of view, i recommend an approach that does not involve offending their point of view.

  • I do not expect to change anybody from a Christian into an atheist in just over one minute. The prayer is designed to be a rebuke to those who assume that if you're white and well mannered you're a Christian. Although the brief was to be offensive I did not go all out to be offensive.

  • You know what as far as I'm concerned atheism is just another religion. So, let the atheists out there worship their god, nothing.

  • Atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Don't mistake atheist activism for atheism: there's a big difference between eating meat and being Col. Sanders.

I have been an atheist for over thirty years, I have only been an activist for just under ten, maybe one day there will be no action required.

There's no worship in atheism, there's nothing to worship and no faith or dogma.

  • Truth being what exactly?

  • Truth being that which is true regardless of your beliefs. Truth is as real as cold, it is the perceived absence of factual error.

  • Nice vid!

  • Thats perfect! but why call it a "prayer" I would call it an "Acceptance summation"

  • It is designed to be something that an atheist can use if some Christian arsehole assumes that you as a well-mannered white person must be a Christian and so invites you to say a prayer.

Follow the link in the description to see the original context.

  • And a "no amen" to you!

  • excellent!

  • Ramen!

  • Nice one Martin

    And Oh yes, Amen! ;)
