  • Justin, regardless If I can learn to play as it is intended to be played I have picked up a TON of technique and tips from these lessons!! Thanks you!

  • Don't listen to the idiot nerdflanders8710 with his immature comments, people like that should have their account removed. You've helped me lots with this video all 4 sections, thanks for taking the time to explain it and break it down, good job.

  • i just played complete. you rock dude.

    thanks from argentina!!!!

  • this sucks you suck as a teacher and you are a stupid fat fucking sack of shit , fuck off asshole stop butchering this song faggot

  • thanks justin, finally learnt all this and and managed to do it all with a pick! (except the flamenco bit) thanks alot! :D

  • Thanks

  • Hey Justin. I know you probably won't read this, but I'm posting it anyway. I just wanted to say that I finally finished learning the whole song, and I just made a video of it. Thanks a bunch for these tutorials, I doubt I would have been able to do it without them.

  • I finally feel like I have those licks flowing very nicely at full tempo now. Now I just need to polish up my timing throughout the whole song. Thank you so much Justin!!!!! You made this a fairly easy song to learn.

  • AHHHHHH!!!!! I have steadily learned this whole song but I just can't get those fast licks. The last 20 seconds will probably take me longer to learn the the first 5.5 min of the song. So close yet still so far away. =(

  • you are soooooooooo good!! I love this song THANK you!!

  • I forgot how much I love that song. Thanks Justin.

  • Thanks Justin brilliant lesson!

  • Thanks guy! I am starting to sound like Mark more and more! You WILL be getting donations from me. You are totally worth it!!!!!! Right guys? Gals? C'mon, shed him some bread!!!

  • thank you so much!!! you`re the best of all the web!! (brazilian fans)

  • Some notes are differents by the original, by the way.....

  • master of masters

  • Great help, thanks! :) And you're right I was here for the fast lick xD

  • Nice! Thank you!

  • Hi justin, thanks very much, great lessons and definately helped clear up the bits i was doubtfull of in the song :)

  • Justin, thanks soooo Much, i`ve been stuffing around trying to learn this one by myself for literally years & years & now i`m finally starting to get the hang of this thing, & all because of you, Thanks heaps & heaps & heaps, you are the very best guitar teacher in the whole universe

  • very helpful details, thanks a lot, that´s really easier to play than it sounds at first. With tabs it would have taken much more time to learn, keep on doing that :)

  • M8 ur my GOD! Ty!!!

  • M8 UR MY GOD! Ty!!!

  • Jason, I must say that I've always loved this song and I was looking for something to throw into the classic rock list. I've been teaching and playing out live longer than you've been alive, but you made this this a very easy lesson! I dig the fact that you used the caged chords to work with and your use of the Dm pentatonic scale in the A form is something I'm getting my students to explore. You also threw in D and C form chords and these are ignored by so many guitarists. Kudos my brother!

  • These 4 videos are the best I've seen online, period. Accurate, easy to follow, quality video, clear speaking, covers both hands, etc.. Thank you so much! Just forgive me for playing this song with a pick. ;)

  • all I can say:regards.quality,matey.always wanted to play this tune-now,thanks to you I can...

  • thanks for all your effort justin , can you play and your bird can sing ?

  • you are the best man!!!!!!

  • is it possible to do that fast riff with plectrum ?

  • Thank you Justin, this was the best tutorial I've found yet and I know where to find a few excellent ones. This was exceptional. I'll look for more of your tutorials. Very helpful.

  • Thank you, for your excellent and easy to learn lessons.

  • I can't play because my fingers are musically retarded, but I'm sort of obsessed with Mark's playing style and I'm probably responsible for at least a 1/4 of the 4.8 million views of his sultan of swing video LOL :)

Your sequence at 7:00 is a bit different than how he does it.

Mark's thumb never really touches the first string. His first and second fingers take care of E & B, and the thumb works the string/s above them :)

  • thanks a lot, you teach so well..i can learn it easily.step by step..^_^

  • Thanks Justin, your a great teacher and player!

  • thank you justin for teaching me to play like knopfler!

  • I've been coming back to these lessons for over a few weeks now and I'd just like to say thank you very much. Your skills as a teacher match your fantastic skills as a guitarist. You make learning guitar much simpler. Now all I have to do is practice till it's perfect.

  • I have been playing guitar for 20 years and you are so much better than me. I find this Knopfler finger picking style so difficult, and you teach it perfectly. I am truly learning from your video. I love your non-showboat style. You are an excellent teacher. Keep up the great work.

  • 3:11 hahaha Justin laughing

  • Man you nailed the whole song. I've been playing guitar for years and never attempted this song.I will now give it a shot. You have a great method of teaching.

Very precise and you don't rush through the lesson.

Thanks for putting your videos out.

    G

  • Just the last solo to go :D

  • Just Beautiful !!!! Thanks.

  • Just a perfect lesson, Thank you

  • thanks Justin! !

  • @royvl91

I have been playing for about 4 months and using this guy can now play the frist solo reasonably well.. The second is much harder and will take ALOT of time but with determination and tons of practice you can do it. Also this is a great song to learn because it makes you better at guitar in so many ways.. there will be many songs you can learn very quickly after this one!

  • Very Good probably better than Lick Library version, easier for students to learn this.

  • what king of fender is it?? american?

  • justin you are a true artist....and it is written all over your personality...may you continue to bless the world with your gift of teaching guitar.....

  • Wow. That's an incredible display of virtuosity and a great lesson. Thanks to much for doing this. I am not worthy!!!

  • incredible teacher. your tone, accent, skills, wording, it really help maintain focus and piece everything together.

  • the best tut. ever :)

  • Hey man, great video learnt it very quickly and you made that last solo very easy to grasp with the finger technique, just wondering what string gauge and strings you use, i think mine may be a bit to tight to hit all them bends dead on.

    5/5 from me

  • Thanks for that great lesson, now I finally got nearly the whole song done quite quickly with your help. Sadly that last fast stuff beginning with the "properly hard little lick" seems to be out of my range to be able to play it ... yet ... i hope.

    Kind regards!

  • "And now for a properly hard little lick . . . " Lol, as if the rest f the song isn't! I'm loving this series, tho my family might be getting a little weary of it. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Thank a lot for all the 4 lesson parts. Your patience and cleverness are greats !

I have learned all the song now.

The best and more easy guitar-teacher of the web!

  • gracias sos muy amable en compartir con todos nosotros tu sabiduría con la musica gracias!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • finally someone who is not cheating like all the other ones using a pick!

  • @guitar789 Lol why is using a pick cheating?

  • @koliko987 because mark knopfler is a fingerpick guitarist, and using a pick will make it sound completely different (not in a good way)

  • @Hobinator17 Yes,but some ppl might prefer pick sound...

  • @koliko987 i understand why some people might, but if u use a pick, it rlly makes the song sound different. id hate to be the person to butcher Kopfler's masterpiece, but if u wanna use a pick, nobodys stopping u

  • Thanx for sharing your knowledge in such a didactical precious manor.May you be successful in whatever you aim for and may we all share our knowledge out of our joy to share without being forced out of economical reasons,so that we can make this world a lovely place for all of us.

  • Hehehe... Hope my neighbours like Dire Straits...

  • @viggethemaniac HaHa same with me all I play is acdc and direstraits

  • i dig playin with the fingers, i myslef use my fingernail as a pick and feel this is one of the greatest advantages of using no pick, plus i play bass too lol

  • great stuff Justin

  • this was easy thx to you thx a lot u rock im going to post my cover soon =)

  • i am crap.

  • I HAVE BLITZ ON MY FINGERS !!

  • thanksa lot justin ;)

  • the fast part before the ''I know you want to know'' part is harder for me..

    is this normal?

  • great player. great lesson!

  • u awwsome dude!!!

  • EXCELLENT lesson!

  • All I can say, it a sincere "Thank You". I've been wanting to play this song for, oh, about the last 20 years I've been playing.

    You made it possible.

  • Dear Justin,

that was The BEST Sultan tutor on the YouTube - without exaggeration. Down to the details, understandable, clear, slow enough. You are a very good teacher.

On the top of that it's all free, without withholds.

Extra thanks for putting the 'fish' on your guitar, not being ashamed of your faith - you are a very good christian man !

    God bless ya !

  • pense num professor bom - think a very good teacher

  • Dude, you are awesome!

  • Thanks Justin. I loved the way you broke it down into the main riff, 1st riff and so on.

You made them simple and easy to understand. I've learnt a lot!!!

  • question: for the fast parts how do you pick? i call it the clawhammer method. He's picking with the thumb and second finger, but is he saying "flip" or "click" for the sound of what looks like an invisible finger! is he using the side of the finger or the palm? can anyone explain me this method? been trying to comprehend it for a year now!

  • @adriana20222 ha m8 i think i know the bit you are on about he is saying flick ! as in a flick off. If thats the bit u are on about it hope i helped if not I look like a twat ryt now ha cheers.

  • @willchatwin

    Thanks!!

  • Justin...Let me say thanks from the bottom of my heart. You are by far the very best guitar teacher on youtube. I am so impressed with your reluctance to be a "Show Boat" You always stay on the task of "teaching" and never become self indulgent. Someone with such class is truly a rare find in the realm of free lessons on youtube. signed: someone that would have never learned this song without you. cheers

  • thanks man every one thinks i'm a hero now at home because of the fantastic lesson

  • @pcpilot96 lol

  • can you send me the complete tab????????

    please.i really need it

  • @TheBadStyler No you chuffin don't! He taught you every single detail in this vid. If you can't play it after watching this, tab won't help you. You could even write your own tab using the detail he gives!

  • very good lesson,very clear

  • very good lesson

  • he does that really good..and totally wkd tune

  • Grandioso! grazie Justin!!!

  • i've a question for you, i i wish you could answer, i see the your strings are kind'a close to the frets, on my guitar to, but when i play a but hard, more less normally, when the strings vibrate i listen to them touching the frets and making a bad noise, i think i don't listen to it when it is amplified, but what should i do?

  • @dropeify

Hi, I'm not Justin but I think I can help. It sounds like the action on your guitar is too low, you might want to take it to a guitar shop or luthier and ask them to sort it for you.

  • @RS1Comedy1Vids thank you, going to try to solve it. thanks you again ;)

  • Justin thanx so much for these lessons. im doing this song for my very last high school music exam. i cuddnt have done it without your help

  • dude, that's what I call a sultan of swing

  • 2:00 what the ... is that? i mean you are the coolest guy on youtube I appreciate your help a lot you make an exellent work! but man the explanation there is wanting. the pattern is confusing cause you change camera before you explain the fret chord lick... is it 9g 10bpull off 8b then 8e 10bpull off 8b then 9g? never had trouble with the other videos but this is not sounding as you sound.

  • Thiw is a perfect guitar lesson, it explained to me clearly and simple how to play one of my favorite songs. Thank you very much and kkep up the good work!

    Great job thnx

  • thanks justin, you really help me.

  • Nice lesson bro..

  • the music is a bit difficult to fix

    but you teach well

    :) thanks

  • Hi Justin, brilliant lesson as usual. Just curious which pickups you have in your strat? Thanks. And if you ever get the urge, could you post a lesson of Steve Winwood's songs as played on the 07 Crossroads DVD (Dear Mr. Fantasy, Presence Of The Lord, and Can't Find My Way Home) any or all 3 would be just fine pls and thk you:)

  • Quoted from Justing website

"I used a 1989 Fender Strat Plus Deluxe into a 1979 Fender Twin Reverb. I bought the strat new (it was my first strat). The neck and middle pickups are the original lace sensor gold pickups, and the bridge is a Seymour Duncan "Cool Stack" humbucker and I have a toggle switch that flicks it to single coil"

  • Eres genial Justin!!! ... te agradezco por la leccion es uno de los clásicos que me encantan... saludos desde Peú

  • You are cool Justin!!! i thank you a lot for the lesson, is one of the clasics that i love. salutes from Peru!!!

  • Thanks for sharing to the world man, this are great videos. Greetings from Argentina...

  • dude ur awsum thanx heaps

  • Thanks, tried it that way and found it to be the most obvious method too.

Only problem I have with it is that I don't have the level of control over the double-down that I would like. The pull also feels weird with that timing.

  • Hey nice video lesson!

For the fast lick I did get the notes right, but is it possible to play that fast with a pick too? I don't have the proper discipline to cut and polish my nails like that, nor do I have a job where that would be practical.

Such licks return in so many solos, Sweet Child o Mine to mention just one for instance. I really want to get my head around that if I want to start playing past bare chords.

  • there is a way but its kinda cheating. it sounds good still tho. just use the b string (aside from the slide to the 9th on the g) and constantly hammer on and pull off but...here

    b--8h10-8-8-8h10

    and keep doing that

  • You don't have to have nails like justin to play this lick fingerstyle, as i can have managed to play it with a fare bit of practice and i have basically no nails.

  • I have searched the entire internet and this is the best site ever for learning to play the guitar. Well done Justin.

  • Thanks for the Dire Straits lesson! You're a great guitar teacher!

  • You are greath, man! Keep go in!

  • Do you take requests? Im lookin for a lesson for hotel california

  • Hey thanks so much for the great details of marks playing. I'll be doing this in my band now!

  • You re awesome Justin !

  • which key is the guitar tuned into?

  • 440

  • standard

  • about the last part of the solo, i dont quite get the reason of that fingering on ur right hand , why not using ur thumb on the second string and then fingers 1 and 2 on the first ? or is that ok too? thats the way i play it but maybe theres a good reason for doing it your way.

    Great lesson btw

  • I play the arpeegios in the same way as you

  • "OK SOLO TWO" LOLOL

  • GRACIASSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you so much Justin for this complete Song, especially for the great teaching of the solos! Keep up this great work!

  • I have been playing this solo for years, thank you for clearing up some of the licks I never quite was happy with, I still play it a little different than you because of my interpretation is similar but different, but everybody always plays there own way even if given the same notes. when ever I want to learn something I can always depend on you to give the correct lesson thank you,
