  • sometimes when she's not really singing, she sounds like a witch haha

  • must admit not one of my favourite versions, she also looks like shes going to burst out laughing any minute.

  • Gosh she's rather flat on the high notes here! Never could understand Voigt's popularity to be honest. However, not having heard her live it's hard to make a qualified judgement.

  • So flat, and that B natural was so badly produced.

  • @jmiller05 I don't know what you guys are hearing. I think this was great! Can't wait to see a recording of you singing it :D

  • She is flat all the way long... looks beautiful though.

  • @thomastmwc Maybe you want to study the text of this aria before criticizing - she is smiling once she begins to describe how love came to her in the midst of all her despair and lifted her out of her misery - a pretty good place to be smiling, don't you think?

  • @Lindow ohohoh, I was actually trying to say why she was JUST smiling, making facial expressions without any (explicit) gestures

I forgot to type the word "just", my bad :P

Thanks for the reminder though :) :) !!!

  • ** beautiful lady ...perfectly voice ... lovely artist ! **

  • Such a fine singer, such a lovely artist vocally sacrificed because a producer wanted her to fit into a black neglige - she lost weight in the aftermath of the scandal. To lose a couple of kilos slowly for the sake of one's health and stage flexibility is fine, but under those circumstances! Shame on the opera directors who always let producers have their own way - they knew well in advance who was booked for the role and should have costumed accordingly!

  • it s incredible how much weight she lost. Brava! that was couragious and above all, she is now soooo beautyfull. the voice is always great. i like her very much. But the Fanciulla del West recently in Met was not so good as this Maddalena...

  • Deborah Voight shows how difficult is this verisimo aria for a wagnerian soprano...as everyone can hear terrible B5 natural; out of pitch...simply not for her...

  • I thought it was Amazing & Beautiful!

  • Was just looking at the posts here ... okay, so it's not her best singing, but give the lady a break. I have heard a lot of great singing from her in the last few years (just check out her 2008 liebestod or look at her la gioconda here on youtube, to name just two). Don't we all sometimes have a less brilliant day at work, even if we are awesome at what we do???

  • is it me or was that high note really flat?

  • Somebody get this woman a bowl of linguine pronto. What a limp, passionless performance. Compare to Callas' 1955 recording of this from La Scala and you'll see what I mean. Put the weight back on, please!!

  • Her larynx is climbing, there's no support....

  • Yeah...im a fan of Voigt's but not this. It was pretty inconsistant and the B was really bad.

  • Yes, she looks fabulous but....Terrible high B natural and a weak chest register. No, Maddalena is not for Debbie Voigt.

  • OH my God!!! Horrible!!!!

I don't care how she look , she is not an Italian soprano!!

  • Her voice was bigger when she was bigger...

  • You are righ....but its funny....people like her more now that shes thinner.

  • @Dymension I don't know why I'm getting two thumbs down. It's my opinion and many others that she lost a lot of power to the voice when she lost the weight. It was too much too soon.

  • the beginning of the end

  • i think this is a totally captivating and expressive performance! loved it!

  • She look FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will agree that something is going on with the voice. I was a classically trained singer who also had weight loss surgery in 2004...it took me a long time to be able to sing again. After loosing 250 lbs, I could not get the breathing right and everything felt sooo different. It was only last year that I was able to perform back to the degree that I was post surgery. My voice sounded 100% better though.

  • No matter how much I love Deborah, something is not quite right here... I am apparently not the only one saying this. She lacks some brilliance and is often out of pitch and it seems like she's out of breath often. The piece is being conducted to slow. Maybe that's what makes it so heavy for her... She looks absolutely fabulous though. Thumbs up for a brilliant singer. This just goes to show she's only human and can have a bad night despite her status. Consoles a struggling singer student.

  • Indeed, it was conducted much too slowly. Not much expressiveness from the orchestra which was still wonderful but clearly uninspired by its leader.

  • Gosh, WAY too slow! Loses all its fun and excitement.

  • It was actually the b she was afraid of. Seems she was struggling with some kind of vocal disalighnment going on that night...

  • Sometimes I'm confused as to her choice to roll her 'r's' so much... but you can't deny her brilliance.

  • I love her to death but the voice just doesn't have the same light brightness it had when she was bigger, im I crazy?!

  • no.

  • this aria could be perfect, but i did not like the end of it , she could have do it better, much better, because she is really a gret singer. Brava!

  • She looks great!

  • Beautiful singing. A beautiful woman. It's funny to see that like Cossotto, she too raise her hands when singing a high B.

  • brava brava , Mme voight

  • Mhm, she was struggling with something here - her eyes kept exposing some kind of fear, whatever it might have been.

  • She looks and, more importantly, sounds FANTASTIC. Brava Debbie!
