I think it's a combination of technology and the fact that it's been done before. Once Fisher established himself at such a young age then other parents and kids realized they could do it too. Kind of like how the 4 minute mile was considered impossible until some one did it, and then with in a month like 300 other people did it.
ray looks somewhat like kotov's proponent who prefer precise calculation to intuitive play. Is this coincidence that alekhine, who had demonic combinative talent, beat a king of intuitive play capablanca?
im 13 and i watch a lot of your videos and i am pretty strong, and i think you are right about kids getting stronger. L O L I think kids once they learn chess, dominate the competition.
I think kids once they learn chess through a program or otb, then will actually play programs at full strength, as thier parents probably won't allow much internet access at that age, thus they play a super strong opponent time and time again, then finally get online and go from there.
Also I think the mind of a kid learning chess is easier, like learning a language, it just comes to them through playing like language comes to them through just hearing it.
I do think kids are getting better because every new generation has new technologies that kids are taught to use from a younger and younger age. One funny example from my childhood is that to "Go to your room!" USED TO BE a punishment! NOW, kids don't come OUT of their rooms! EVERYTHING IS THERE! Wide-screen TV's, cell phones, land lines, computers, hi-fi stereos, etc...I had an 8 track, PERIOD! It WAS a punishment! NOWADAYS, you discipline children by taking away their cells, and computers! lol
Thanks for sharing. Bobby Fischer himself felt that people, kids included I'm sure, are getting stronger. With the advent of the internet we now have the ability to quickly learn and study vasts amount of theory, opening and otherwise. This is one reason he came out with his Random chess game.
at 8:30 i would have played Qxc8, seeing as how blacks light square bishop could not re-capture, because that would be met with bishop G5+, a discovered attack on blacks queen.
very nice game. Just a remark you did not outline that Bb4 move also threatens mate in 1 on e7, and that's I think the real beauty of the move. Both defensive and offensive in so many different ways.
kids are stronger because they grow up with chess -and the modern techonolgy which was not available before- so their brains actually develop and adapt to chess. its the usual phenomena: you learn better as a kid than as a grownup.
Wat is happen is the parent are push kids in chess at much younger ages and are pushing them more ( make them focus primily on chess). And since ther computer program it very easy for any parent to teach his sons. Witch is a change for the past were the kids didn't learn that much form the parents they need to perform on ther own and went they get a little old if they did well then they would be thought by a IM or GM. All this make it so kids are now insane in chess at very young ages.
I'm thinking maybe kids may be getting better at chess because their math skills are improving. Kids are learning more advanced math faster and faster and chess is like math. For example, after after you learn 9 times 6 you don't forget it. It's the same in chess when you learn openings or pawn games or whatever it never changes.
Are kids getting better at chess? I think all players are getting better at chess. All these tools we have now weren't there 50 years ago. Your average player couldn't go and review every single game the worlds geatest players ever played. Now they can.
Thanks to the internet players of today could probably mop the floor with players of the same rank from 20-30 years ago.
the 9 years old kid Hetul Shah beat GM Nurlan Ibrayev(2407) couple of days ago in Parsvanth turnament in New Delhi(India). It would be interesting to post a video with the game!
seriously, communication can't be had eloquently or even pleasantly the state of your grammar. Rather than attempting to dismiss the situation with something like "who cares?" why not just improve your grammar - then you're good if someone does care. As for the business about the sole use of grammar being just a means for people to get themselves nice jobs, why not use it if it is so true? why not exploit good grammar?
wtf? "communication can't be had eloquently or even pleasantly the state of your grammar?" Physician, heal thyself! Had your own pedantic eructation itself been grammatical, it would have been neither eloquent nor pleasant. This is youtube, numbnuts, not the Loeb Library.
the knight is protected by the g2 pawn. if ...Qxf2; Q-c8 ch ...K-e7; Qxh8 gaining the advantage. black can't take f3 because it is still protected by the g2 pawn. if now ...Qxg2; now the knight can simply move away perhaps N-d4?? threatening the bishop on e5.
i know i usually dislike people being anal about spelling and grammar. but i feel compelled to put that one right since it occurs SO much that i think they must be teaching kids wrong.
ofcourse younger players are getting stronger. Its due to internet access more than anything. look at all the hype about A levels becoming easier because of higher pass rates when really people just have more info at thier fingertips. Imagine what material morphy had to study with to practise combinations, not much. Now there are tons of books and websites to study from
no ego, great will power, concentration, and practice..if u do all that...doesnt matter how old you are you will get good..as we get older, our body deteriorates not our brain....Victor Korchnoi is a good example....i beat my math teacher who was 2000ish in his prime, and he didnt even shake my hand after the game....that type of an ego problem will definately cause him to stay that level...but this GM was incredible
i played my first tournament and came third so i must thank you for your videos, I played a few 9 year old children who would give many masters a run for their money
Yes, kids are getting stronger at chess. I am 26, just broke 2000 a few months ago, and the number of high school players in my state 10+ years younger than I who have already broken 2000 or come close to it, makes me feel like an old fart sometimes.
Unfortunately the college chess situation in the US is a joke, designed to reward US schools who recruit foreign titled players. We need to take more of our 1800ish high school seniors and turn them into 2300ish young adults.
I think the internet has helped a lot by just being able to access more information. If Bobby Fisher had the internet when he was a boy, he prob would have been even more dangerious
i think the most crucial point in a chess player's development is when they are first exposed to the game. i was shown the game when i was about 7 by my uncle and didn't take very seriously at all. now i'm 21, and am finding it very difficult to improve! i think if i was given the resources i have available now when i was 7, i'd be a much stronger player.
has anyone read josh waitzkin's 'art of learning'? he talks about approaching things with the mind set of a beginner.
I disagree about young peoples brains being more receptive. My very first game of chess was september 27th 2007 and I'm 21. Along with lots of practice and lots of KC's videos I'm now beating people around the 2100 mark online and about to join a local club. Fair enough if you want to be a top GM you'd prob have to start young, but being concerned at starting at 11 seems a bit silly, I would have loved to been shown chess then.
I've just left "child" status behind me, but I know from playing juniors that they're bloomin' good! That said, I don't think there is much depth. Fewer children in the UK play nowadays (that goes for people generally, though). I started at 11, and in 7 years, I've got to 1700 ELO. If I'd started younger, as many leading youngsters do, then I may even be better than that. I think it's easier for young people to improve than old people, because their minds are more receptive to new concepts.
On the Bxc2 variation. I believe Whites next move would have been 0-0. With the idea of then overloading the center with overwhelming development especially with his Queen's location.
Cause after white castles, white only has the rook in it's original position. Whereas after Black's turn, Black still has 3 pieces undeveloped. Also, White can gain another tempo (if wanted) by QR-c1. So I think Ray's immediate punishment was far superior development which later in the game would be overwhelming
With strong engines like rybka3 human just plowing through theory, I think there will be some exceptional players who learn from intuition and not from calculating. If they later learn calculating and opening theory the can be really strong, but very few people have that kind of dedication and chess isn't the most profitable way for them to use their talent so all of them wont have the chance to grow into their full potential.
I guessed at Qxc8 because if the bishop takes whites queen then white can win blacks queen with Bb4.

Not sure you can compare the kid to Fischer and still support the conclusion that kids in general are getting stronger at the game.
Either way, that's a lot better than I could have done at age 13.
