  • Why is compression needed when you only gonna turn up the gain on the compressor anyway ? excuse the stupid question

  • @roundfaceproductionz A compressor is a tool to help smooth out audio track levels. So it makes the loud bits get quieter while leaving the quiet bits alone. If you just turned the track up, you've still got the problem that some of the track is too loud and some is too quiet. Make up gain is there to compensate for the fact that the compressor lowers the average level of the track. Don't be tempted to use it to adjust the level of the track in the mix, just compensate.

  • Dude u should write a book on mixing hiphop thanx

  • i love this...could literally watch this stuff all day, take notes yall

  • Dave the man....

  • I struck gold! You rock.

  • what is Michaels Browers website?

  • subscribed! Thanks for the info man!

  • If you want to know a threshold value to start, just look at the peak of your track and start from there.

  • very nice vid bro. ill be sure to subscribe to your channel.

  • "jesse" is always riding the output gain up to high.

  • This video is stupid. Firstly you get limiters with 6:1 ratios. Secondly, compression for dynamic range manipulation would happen during mastering if at all. Limiting definitively happens during mastering.

I personally think 2bus compression is horrible most of the time, however if you like the soggy effect it gives, you didn't actually discuss tonal characteristics through AR times or harmonic characteristics of various compressors to any real extent, especially not for a 10 minute vid.

    Lame.

  • @kronier shows what you know. Call it whatever you want. Compressor, Limiter - doesn't matter. The GENERAL consensus among engineers and modern manufacturers is 20:1 ratio and higher is limiting. Compression for dynamic range manipulation happens at all stages of a recording, not just mastering.

I would bet you haven't heard a single song on the radio in the last 20 years or more that didn't have some level of 2 bus compression.

Finally, like Pensado said: if you think he is wrong - save it

  • @spacewaystudios Firstly it's not just threshold which matters in limiting. Brickwall requires extremely small, but optimally look ahead attack. But anyway the general consensus around engineers that I know is that anything above 4:1 is starting to get into limiting. IE difference between 6:1 and 10000000:1 is musically very small.

I've mastered literally thousands of songs & on many I know there's no 2bus compression. Often it wasn't on the mix originally or I requested that it be taken off.

  • @kronier

Sorry, but you have no idea what you're talking about.

  • @gonzomuse Concerning what? Pretty much everything I said was a widely accepted fact or a stated fact - IE a large amount of songs I've personally mastered don't use 2bus compression during mixing or mastering.... you can't argue this because I'm just stating a fact.

  • @kronier I personally like 2bus sidechained compression if any. But yeah, I generally will advise a mix engineer to do no more than 2 dB of redux.

  • 6.22 - nice tip!! Thanks very much.

  • @TheRemedyResource - Sorry, more like 6.02

  • i thought 10:1 and up was a limiter? eh

  • I think you may be right about not losing low end but rather gaining top end during compression. Your the 1st person I've ever heard with that view. Nice!

  • 6:30 that weedhead greeting hahaha

  • UGH... this is horrible...

  • @blakeyou91...awesome bro...many thanks..

  • wow thanks

  • Important information, thank you. You sound like Mr. Mackey from South Park!

  • got a stupid question for you guys...i want to get into home studio recording...does compression help in any type of vocals?...does it affect the quality at all?

  • @boombastic627 Compressing the vocals will reduce the dynamic range (make loud and quiet parts all equal loudness depending on the amount of compression used)

It will reduce the quality if you compress it to death, best thing to do is only add a bit to control the dynamic range if needed, so that its not insanely quiet and insanely loud...

Just keep recording until its a good take and itl save time trying to fix it during the mixing process

  • You must Dont Know Who This Guy Is.............SMH

  • i like your work an was wondering if i send my demo to u can u clean it up for me

  • how to set up a compressor after you've listened to the song

i need you to explain each element of a compress and show us how each of hem work..

  • hellow i have a question i have a mxl 900 mic i know is not that good mic. but when im tryin to do paraller compresion to limit a vocol in my send when i put the send fiter at 0 i se that my track get much loud and i dont have no plugin on my aux track and when i have the limiter on the aux track it soun like is in a filter so i guess is the mic and some lantancy prblem and phacing too please let me know wha cant my be the problem

  • Bobby Owsinski Said This About The Compressor:

There Is Two Reasons Why You Might Want To Use A Compressor On A Track Or A Mix:

To Control The Dynamic Of The Signal, Or To Shape The Sound.

And He Call's It Reality vs. Hollywood

I Found That Very Fittingly And It Made Me Think About Compressors Differently ...

  • 1:30 So Funny ... If You Listen To It Without Looking At The Screen ... Hahaha

  • Thanks! just the shit i was thinking about at school today!!!

  • you rock.... David Pensado.....

    your a humble guy!

  • Okay first time I watched this show I was a bit disgruntled at that fact that you kept talking over Tony Maserati but all of your other episodes have made up for that. Excellent show!

  • Thanks!!!!!

  • 10 minutes of talking -- nothing said

  • Dave, what processing and, or plug-ins do you use on your 4 main sub busses? What additional mixing do you perform on these channels? Thanks.

  • Maybe a touch of vintage gear like Sta Level is OK for coloration, but without much compression. Brick-wall limiters are only part of mastering sessions. A mastering engineer will have a much wider choice of those plugs anyway. Look at gearslutz they all prefer Voxengo Elephant or Pro-L to Waves.

  • Everybody has their way of working but any mastering engineer will tell you you should have nothing on the mix buss when you export (or mix in real time with an external analog board).

  • @SonicFarmAudio

Nor entirely true. If you put a compressor on the 2bus for a particular sound, you should keep it there.

If it's for loudness, leave it to the mastering engineer. I know at least a few major mastering engineer that would agree to that.

  • I like the presets you made for the waves plugins. The are a great start point for me when I am mixing. Thanks for doing these videos !

  • You the man !!
