In slavonian culture (i'm talking about russian culture) Red colour is the one of basic colour. Red is the colour of life, sun, fertility, health and also colour of the other world and mithical characters. The colour was widly used in devotions - wedding, burial, christening. Yes, we had Red flag in ussr time, after revolution. .Red colour of our flag also "make (made) us sad for the lost lives shed in battle for".... Just Cause, in other words revolution.
Thanks for the additional insight......I am looking at the 'Hammer and Sickle' flag with a different, and perhaps more correct, perspective. It was engrained in we Americans as a somewhat threatening icon of communism. It is a shame there has been so much spilt blood to commemorate. Maybe internet communication will reduce the chances of adding to the total!! best wishes
oh, please! of course your point of view is correct... but for the same americans like you. I don't wanna discuss it with person who even cannot to accept that there is other point of view. who didn't live in russia especially in USSR. who knows about russia (through the propoganda) only as a rival, the worst enemy. you have no ideas what live we had. yes, maybe they controled us too much, but...
I never really thought about that 'sun' thing before. I guess you do see it red more often than yellow! I somehow feel more intune with the Russia soul!!!! Wow.....YOUTUBE is great, isn't it!!! Best wishes......
Thanks for the additional insight! This song is such a part of American skating conciousness, but few people have any idea what it is about!!! Good that YOUTUBE can educate so many. The point about the color RED, is interesting....but we (Americans) equate Red with spilt blood!! It seems to have a more revolutionary fervor to Russians..Red stripes on our flag make us sad for the lost lives shed in battle for so many confrontations. Someday, they will all cease! best wishes
I will check my videos when I get home Thursday, but as far as I remember, this was just the Exhibition performance from the 1980 Olympics, broadcasted over the airways. Most of these tapes have just been lost to corporate mergers and buyouts. No one is real sure where anything is......shame...I will write again this weekend! 9/27 best wishes
Little guelder rose (Kalinka), little guelder rose of mine in the garden,
raspberry, raspberry, little raspberry of mine!
Ah!under the pine, the green one,Lay me down to sleep. ah lully, lully, ah lully ah lully. Don't rustle about me..(a snow laiden tree makes a nice private igloo!!!)
Chorus:
a little pine, little green one, Don't rustle above me...ah Lully lully, Lay me down to sleep.
Ah you beauty, pretty maiden, Fall in love with me.
Ah lully ah lully, ah lully, Fall in love with me.
The actual Russian words cannot be translated (or transliterated) into English as it involves many Russian expressions and words that have a double meaning, and no equivilant in other lanquages. Singers and dancers often explode into wild, girating, frenzied dancing when the song is played!! Here is an effort at the English words, but I think if there is a corollary in America, it might be "Don't sit under the apple tree, with anyone else but me" a 1930's pop hit! bit of a boy gets a kiss song
I did get an explanation of KALINKA, but apparantly there is no explanation. It is the best known Russian song of all time, but it is not a folk song. It was written for a show in 1860, by Ivan Petrovich Larionov (1830-1889). It became part of touring local folk groups, and was spread around Russia.
The song celebrates a snowball tree?? (which I think just means a tree so heavy laden with snow, that you can reach up and pull off a snowball!) See more in the above post!!!!
mmmm.....i thought Jerry Lee Lewis meant something quite specific with the expression 'Tutti Frutti", but I was really too young to know for sure......it is an interesting parallel, thanks for commenting....best wishes
Can anyone explain the music and story of KALINKA. Why is it so important to Russians? What should we be thinking and feeling as we hear it, and see it performed???? best wishes and love to Russian skaters everywhere!!!!!
Her face was so animated!! Wonderful to see someone having such great fun on the ice!! It does touch peoples souls! thanks for your comment, best wishes
By own, I mean she was just that great and skated the heck out of the ice! (belonged there!!) I have no real political beef either. Irina was magnificant!! as are many Russian teams!! best wishes

In fact, refren "Kalinka- malinka" does not have any meaning - "Guelder-rose, raspberry in a garden a berry" Kind of Tutti frutti ))))
