I grew up to listening to Guy Lombardo starting back in the early 1930's doing the best version of Auld Lang Syne. Since he died there has not been a good version.
I had the honor of ringing in the new year by singing a karaoke version (in this key) of this song at a large town party. It took me forever to find out who had done this version of ALS, thank goodness I found out just in time.
Not from that era myself, but that tune for some reason always brings out a few tears, they can have the rock & rap for newyears eve, i will take the lambardo version anyday.
I loved watching Guy Lombardo on New Years Eve in the 70s when I was a kid. Enjoyed watching the drunk old people with their party hats dancing. I have had no desire to watch the crappy New Years coverage since he died.
Without Guy Lombardo, New Year's is NOT New Years! This rock crap is NOT New Years at all. They can keep this Dick Clark or whoever they have this year!
Guy Lombardo WAS New Years and ALWAYS will be! Thank You!
Bing Crosby was Christmas, Guy Lombardo was New Years. How uncanny they both died the same year and neither holiday has been the same since. My dads birthday was Jan 1. Man what I would give to just have one more drink with him. I sit here at the computer with tears in my eyes baby sitting my grandsons playing video games in high def. Life is still good, Its just not the same as High atop the Waldorf. Auld lang syne my friend as you play it in heaven. Salute'
I used to stay up and watch Guy Lombardo every New Year's Eve from the Waldorf Astoria in New York. At 12 midnight, they would play this great but melancholy song. Things just aren't the same without him anymore.
As a kid, on New year's Eve, I used to watch some old movie, any old movie, and watch it until about two minutes before midnight and switch over to whatever channel Lombardo was on, and listen to what he was playing, and think, "In this day and age, who listens to this crap?" As I write this, I have been playing "this crap" for over 25 years, like Guy did, the other 364 nights a year, for events of various kinds, and I have made a TON of money doing it. Is this a great country, or what?
Guy Lombardo was a childhood friend of family from the London/Ingersoll area in Canada. One of our family would
tell stories of calling him up every so often to chat about
their childhood days. Guy would insist on paying for the
telephone calls and visit for quite sometime. One time Guy's Italian father broke a violin over Guy's head when he attempted to "jazz" up a particular song. His father yelled at him, "Play the music at it is written!"
Brings back memories when growing up 50 years ago. would stay up and watch on tv to see all the people packed in. My father would say they were all crazy but deep inside, I think he wanted to be there too. Would give anything to spend one more New Years with my parents.
Thank you- this means a lot to me. I didn't realize how much I missed Guy and the Canadians-my best New Year's Eve since 1973- it's sweet again with Guy and the Canadians! Happy New Year!
Excellent Video for Tonight.I just may stay up past 12 am for the 1st time in years.A fellow on another video said"News Years Eve without Guy Lombardo is like Christmas without a Christmas Tree".SO TRUE.
@ pinkhouse, I agree . Guy Lombardo was new years eve. With orchestra , flowing gown and dancing! What this person tubes is not worthy!

What's the difference between the Guy Lombardo Orchestra and a Moose? With the moose, the horns are up front and the asshole's in the rear.

I'm not even from the era of this song, but this is the version that I always remember for Auld Lang Syne. It's nostaligic.

Same here. When I began business travel in the 70s I couldn't wait to see the Waldorf-Astoria because I'd seen it so many New Year's Eves with Guy.
Wish you could, too, ptcandy :( Love them and the memories!
