  • or you could go to the hardware store an buy the insolation board that has the shiny back. it works much better cos you dont get little artifacts in the light like the alluminum foil!

  • I was just wondering, what would you need the light reflectors for? is it so that your videos wont be dark?

  • you look like tay zonday in the thumbnail

  • does that really work? honestly?

  • Try using a polystyrene board... it works wonders...

  • A white piece of bristol board glued to a sheet of cardboard works wonders as well. Anything thats white and semi-sturdy works best. I fond aluminum gives off too much of a light dropoff. When using white fabric/paper/etc you get a natural diffusion in the light being reflected

  • how do you make a fedora hat??????

  • that wasn't a fedora in the video...

just buy one, you can get a decent one made of 100% crushable cotton for like 40 bucks. :P

  • just buy them , and if you dont have the money , theres an How-to episode on Threadbanger

  • lol, the end is funny, ah ahh ahhh

  • thanks for these awesome quick tips they really help!

  • scrunching up he foil first and then spreading it out disperses the light much better creating a soft light. Using a mirror DeagleBeagle would create uplighting shadows.

  • why are all you guys giving him crap? he's awesome and is trying to help us all out! great job, keep it up!

  • In my opinion I use photographic paper / card that gently reflects the light much better.

  • A white card is better. Paper on cardboard works. It will give you very soft light, great for a fill light.

  • aluminum doesnt relect that good, maybe a mirror wood be a good reflector try that

  • a mirror reflects a bit too much....you might as well just shine the light right on the subject.....the point of a reflector is to controll the light and the foil does just that.

  • do you actually do any filmaking?Lighting is very important and this was just a clip from the end of one of there episodes.

  • Yes :S I know lighting is important it's just this was so obvious... shiny reflects light. duh...

  • ya, watching these without sound is funny, probably better, what's with all the "Indy Mogul" everywhere, its too flashy, and the information isn't that great.....whatever

  • Hehe...It is!;O;D

  • watching these videos without sound is funny XD

  • dude that was genius XD

  • lol

  • haha

  • haha

  • OR...

you could go buy some of those mirrored sunshades you use in your car for about $3. Plus you get "shiny" side, and a more "diffused" side, and about four of them that pack away really easily...

  • or u could NOT use money and do wat he says =P

  • Yeah...I've tried that...Not a good idea at all. I've had my photographer assistant hold it while doing a beach shoot and the wind was blowing it every where and not to mention, it doesn't reflect as much as aluminum.

  • hurray!

  • hmmm.. can i use mirror..heheheheh

  • Me personally? I love Vegas Video.

  • ok.

  • WTF?

  • IS Adobe and Final Cut (?) cheap to get?

  • no just download it illegally off mininova dot com

  • no. i believe Final Cut is around $1000 and I think Adobe is about half that price.

  • Which is better to use?

  • it's a matter of opinion. i personally prefer Final Cut, but then again, it was the first high-end editing program I used, so I might be biased, cause I'm more used to it. i know a lot of people who prefer adobe...it's up to the specific editor.

but they're similar in a lot of ways. i believe Final Cut and Avid Pro are the most popular when it comes to affordable high-end editing software

  • It;s R2D2

  • Done that b4, me and my brother do that on the grill when we want our steaks extra dark:3

  • Oh my god. This is just so cool! Indymogul.. 1 thing: YOU RULE!

not much more to say about you. :D

  • NOOOOO CHAIN LETTERS!!!!

  • Wow, you really appear fluorescent & luminescent now.

  • you can also get one of those large car windshield reflectors from a dollar store or anywhere else cheaply and use that, it's durable and folds easily.

  • Those are great. Get the kind that have silver on both sides, one shiny and one dull. The dull side is more generally useful because it does a better job of diffusing the light so it is not focused. The shiny side gives a more focused effect, watery if you move it.

  • Good tip. I had no idea. Are you in film school or soemthing?

  • Nope, no film school. Just the school of DIY.

  • A human sized sangwich! I gotta see this

  • You don't have to wait long!

  • You ever do any fantasy work? Idea maybe you could all so some magic effects, like spellcasting effect?

  • those effects are done using combustion, maya, adobe after effects etc.

  • now THAT'S a useful tip, if you've seen my latest vid (and I know you have, as you already looked at it for feedback on shooting angles) you'll notice that one angle was usually really dark, and the other one was really light.

now i might get them all the same, or at least closer ^.^

  • Jernov, You should test this technique while shooting a video response to one of Indy Mogul's vids...eh? What do you think?

  • hah, Who knows ;)

  • Thanks fool! I needed to know how to make these!

Thanks you so much Eric for you damn cheap ways to make stuff!

  • Glad to be of help! Check out Monday's episode for info on how to make a human-sized sandwich :D

  • ...a human-sized sammich...

    Eric...

I have no damn idea what goes through your mind on a daily basis...but it's gotta be damn cool...

  • awesome tip! in the film industry, sometimes we use what is called a "pizza box". it's a small chunk of flat styrofoam that is shiny on one side and white on the other. to make one on the cheap, tape paper to one side of the cardboard and wrinkle and smooth out aluminum foil for the other side (tape it duller side up).

great show, and i love your website.

  • The great thing about DIY filmmaking is that there are so many innovative ways to make stuff that people in the industry pay WAYYyy too much money for.

Glad you love the show, and if you've got any other awesome tips we'd love to hear about 'em and include them on the show.
