Actually, I thought this too until VERY recently, when I read the strong anti-Christian sentiments of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Franklin and others. Many thought the Christian faith was false or corrupted by man (the latter of which I would agree with) but that religion was a critical human right to be respected and un-touched by the government. The 10 Commandments formed the basis of policy because they make SO much sense, but his nation is really based on capitalism and free enterprise.

The separation of church and state only restricts the federal government from declaring a formal national religion. People are free to worship how ever they please. However the US itself was founded under christian ethics/morals. Even true christians will acknowledge man is free to chose whatever god/religion he choses to worship (and a true christian will NOT condemn a man for choosing his God). You should check and make sure because I just re-read both documents and the First Amendment to the Constitution says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . ." The phrase "separation of church and state" is generally traced to an 1802 letter by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists.

The amendment just says basically the Federal Gov't cannot legislate a national religion or require it's citizens to worship the way it wants them to (which is why the original pilgrims/settlers fled Europe. The constitution says "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States".
