  • when did you first start kendo? i really want to try it some day.

  • @TasteForDisaster I had never done it before I moved to Japan in 2004, and got into with the JH students I was teaching.

  • What's the kendo poster on your wall?

  • @Tabzaqu the large wall hanging behind me in most of this video is the school crest and kanji for the Jr High where I used to teach English - Taisha JH.

  • @Tabzaqu weird - I just saw this comment again many months later, and I realize that you mean the kendo poster behind me that I'm pointing to at the beginning - it was for the ALL-JAPAN kendo competition that was held in Izumo in 2004, the year I came to Japan.

  • wait till u have to take the dan test -.-

    soooo tiring and hard

    and training with dans :O

  • i think jason should say im not fat im just big boned

  • your Japanese is good!!

  • this was very funny to watch. great job in making this. as a student new to kendo myself, you basically did all the things I did (vocally, that is), lol. awesome job.

  • good to see your channel again, I lost it once and forgot the name ^^

hmm, say goodbye to belly if you do much kendo hehe ^^

    be well !

  • Lol, it's soo cool!! It's great how the sensei and all the kids were so helpful in the video. It shows they reall respect you. Great video!

  • yeah - the teachers and students are all fantastic and I had a great time that day.

  • gonna watch the kids beat you with sticks! zettai na!

  • 6:30 ;-)

I so envy you Jason for having this great experience.

  • Great video!

  • thanks! glad you liked it. :)

  • soooo cool when they all speak together

  • Awesome! Looks like lots of fun! Painful from what I hear! ^-^ I am excited about part two!

  • why does this remind me of a chris farley video?

    Fun video Jason.

  • i just started practicing kendo last september. I will probably have to wait for another 5 months before I can actually wear bougu.

I sort of can't wait.. hahaha...

nonetheless, kendo is a great and enjoyable sport! :)

  • yeah - most of the time when I worked out with the team after school, I would just do the warm up drills and stroke practice and then when they all suited up, I would just watch or go lift weights. But I did suit up more my first year with the team and it was really fun, altho I never did get very good.

  • Cant wait for part 2 :)

  • That was really cool Jason. I can't wait to see part 2.

  • Well that was interesting video. Thanks for the informative video on the uniform/clothing of Kendo.

    -Billy-

  • なつかしい~!剣道がだいすき。でもさ、本当に久しぶりだよな~。まあ、稽古やりたい・・・

  • ありがとう :)

  • looks like you had a lot of fun =D

  • hahaha! Great Video! Thanks for sharing!

  • That was so cool...... Thanks for the video.....

  • thanks for watching - part two in a week or so. :)

  • awesome vid jason. i can tell you and the students had a great time with this. I know you miss them. You'll be back soon i know. can't wait for the next one!

  • I think the seiza is the hardest part of kendo lol, every time i've tried the seiza it's felt as though your feet shouldn't bend in that direction

  • oh yeah hakama takes so long to put on lol

  • Approximately, how much would the gear cost in North America? I think Kendo ranks as one of the more expensive Combat Sports/Martial Arts in terms of cost of equipment.. And how would you clean the equipment?

    I like this post.

  • go to the links in the side for some pricing or try allcombat(dot)com or e-bogu(dot)com.

I used to dry clean my hakama and keiko-gi. But kendo is a smelly sport. :)

  • hehe you remind me of Big the Budo from Kinnikuman.

  • great video! loved it!

  • Luv the beatles poster at the start and music at the end XD

  • great vid.

why can't you show your students? they seem to have quite a fun with you.

can't wait to see part two when they beat you up :)

  • i try to limit the exposure of my kids for privacy sake, but for this video they gave me permission to film, so it's all good.

  • The best audiovisual classroom ever!

I must stand up bareheaded to show

    my respect, Jason.

  • Awesome sport, in what other sport are you allowed to hit people in the gut with a wooden sword and yell DOUGH? :D

  • One of the best video's I really like the videos of you interacting with people.

  • nice vid. cool to see all the individual pieces names! I added them all to my flash cards so thanks for that. Kendo and judo are the two clubs I have never joined... I guess knowing 0% of the rules lessens my interest.. but i will eventually

  • yeah - when I do my "impressions of kendo" vlog, I'll talk a bit about the subjective nature of the scoring, which still confuses me to this day. I never got into judo at my school, but my kendo kids were always some of my favorite kids.

  • should of yelled out 'henshin' with a before and after shot.

  • It's interesting being fat in a Japanese school. In elementary school, some kids squeeze my sides and say "Metaboru!"

  • dude - if they say that to you - then I would be a sumo to them. :)

  • Very cool!

  • can't wait for the next part ^^

  • haha, can't wait for part 2.

  • One of your best vids. Looking forward to pt 2 =)

  • thanks - I hope to have pt 2 up in the next week or so

  • Thats great, as a kendo practitioner (past 5 years now), I can understand how difficult it is to get the bogu on originally.. Also yes, your right, it is very hot! I sweat a lot inside my bogu. Can't wait to see part 2.

  • cool - thanks!

  • I used to do Kumdo, which is basically just the Koeans rip off of Kendo, we use all the same gear and techniques, and they compete in Kendo tournaments. I'm now learning JuJitsu/Judo.

  • patio87// Kumdo = Kendo. It is the Korean pronunciation of Kendo. It is not a rip off. They are the same thing.

  • They're not exactly the same thing they have different kata.

  • awesome vid, i was always curious about the attire worn during kendo.
