@Tabzaqu the large wall hanging behind me in most of this video is the school crest and kanji for the Jr High where I used to teach English - Taisha JH.
@Tabzaqu weird - I just saw this comment again many months later, and I realize that you mean the kendo poster behind me that I'm pointing to at the beginning - it was for the ALL-JAPAN kendo competition that was held in Izumo in 2004, the year I came to Japan.
this was very funny to watch. great job in making this. as a student new to kendo myself, you basically did all the things I did (vocally, that is), lol. awesome job.
yeah - most of the time when I worked out with the team after school, I would just do the warm up drills and stroke practice and then when they all suited up, I would just watch or go lift weights. But I did suit up more my first year with the team and it was really fun, altho I never did get very good.
awesome vid jason. i can tell you and the students had a great time with this. I know you miss them. You'll be back soon i know. can't wait for the next one!
Approximately, how much would the gear cost in North America? I think Kendo ranks as one of the more expensive Combat Sports/Martial Arts in terms of cost of equipment.. And how would you clean the equipment?
nice vid. cool to see all the individual pieces names! I added them all to my flash cards so thanks for that. Kendo and judo are the two clubs I have never joined... I guess knowing 0% of the rules lessens my interest.. but i will eventually
yeah - when I do my "impressions of kendo" vlog, I'll talk a bit about the subjective nature of the scoring, which still confuses me to this day. I never got into judo at my school, but my kendo kids were always some of my favorite kids.
Thats great, as a kendo practitioner (past 5 years now), I can understand how difficult it is to get the bogu on originally.. Also yes, your right, it is very hot! I sweat a lot inside my bogu. Can't wait to see part 2.
I used to do Kumdo, which is basically just the Koeans rip off of Kendo, we use all the same gear and techniques, and they compete in Kendo tournaments. I'm now learning JuJitsu/Judo.
when did you first start kendo? i really want to try it some day.

@TasteForDisaster I had never done it before I moved to Japan in 2004, and got into with the JH students I was teaching.

I think the seiza is the hardest part of kendo lol, every time i've tried the seiza it's felt as though your feet shouldn't bend in that direction

go to the links in the side for some pricing or try allcombat(dot)com or e-bogu(dot)com.
I used to dry clean my hakama and keiko-gi. But kendo is a smelly sport. :)

It's interesting being fat in a Japanese school. In elementary school, some kids squeeze my sides and say "Metaboru!"

patio87// Kumdo = Kendo. It is the Korean pronunciation of Kendo. It is not a rip off. They are the same thing.
ompbrecords 2 years ago
They're not exactly the same thing they have different kata.
