Its a form of symbolism. Notice how he calls her "babe" him saying that just demonstrates how he doesnt see or respect the law..."imaginery line with some plants". Thats all it is to him, he does not see what he's doing as breaking the law because to him the law doesnt exist. It shows you where is values are and how hes able to do what he does without thinking twice about it.
