Its like a more durable smaller mobile home, if you welded two of them together side by side or on top of each other you would have a good sized place that's self contained. You could literally drop one of these somewhere by truck or helicopter and call it done.
A non-insulated shipping container is much like a old non-insulated log cabin, minus the air leaks. Thus it's got a bit of an improvement over that form of traditional low impact housing. And they are quite easy to insulate inside and out.
A pre-insulated model is nice, but i'd rather get a traditional container and frame it in, that way you don't loose any surface area when you go to cover the metal walls.
i want to build a shipping container home...im already designing multi functional small furniture, rain water collection, biogas heating, solar water heating , and LED solar lighting system...the idea is to finish the inside of the container with only the very best building materials, granite counters, cherry floors, ect...thus making it very high end yet inexpensive, comfortable and long lasting. Maximizing outdoor living spaces for a larger feel
folks have a real hard time wrapping their little brains around the fact that you can turn a s/c into a house, use your imagination and the configurations are endless. just like a normal house you have to put systems in so that it is functional and livable. what really bugs me of this video is the guy promoting a web-site that explores the very idea of creation dwellings but is opiniated about this one ???? really bad coments on his part.
@veufcliquot you are correct. I just had a meeting with a captive audience and discussed shipping container dwellings and the people could not imagine or grasp the possibilities. When I discussed that it would be a great way to have temporary shelters for homeless people, or people struggling after a natural disaster, the comments were "not in my backyard". I was very dissappointed. It is going to take a few years. People like "braggable" homes.
Excellent! Sign me up for one for use as a cabin. I don't think I'd want to live in one full time but as a cheap vacation cottage or as a non-rustic cabin or something, this would be great. How did they insulate it? My guess is that it is a refrigerated shipping container for goods that need to be kept cold, so the whole container is pre-insulated to keep in the cold of a refrigerator unit.

Search for states/counties with no building codes, not really necessary but save a bunch of money and bureaucratic hassle. And go look for owner financed land. Ebay has some to get you started. Ie, Missouri, around 8 acres $16.000 m/l. 50% down, 6% interest, $90/month for 10 years.
@CriterionCoIIection where do I obtain the money to buy the land, youll proly say "get a job",where do I obtain a job to get the money to buy the land, dont even get me started about my job search, thats a touchy subject for me right now
@TheGamerOnWii oh shit im so retarded, get a job,why didnt I think of that!?they just hand those things out like candy now adays and land is so cheap, maybe if i wasnt so lazy id have myself a homestead by now.(sarcasm)
I like this type of house,i.e. insulated container. Cleaver idea keeping the exterior looking like a shipping container. It would be great for a hunting camp.
Some insulate external cladding on a standard container welded to concrete piers these homes would serve well has hurricane and flood resistant structures in areas where insurers wont insure properties.
You could even place more insulate on the inside behind the dry wall if need be with drop down awnings cut from the side of the container to insert windows.
With the excess of containers in the US from China the containers should be cheap as chips.
I am all for green, but some eco-people are just wierd. I have seen houses built from multiple shipping containers as a good use for a used product, but to live in an actual shipping container is just nuts. Not to mention composting toilets...where you crap on sawdust like wild animals.
@v12tommy actually, most of them are very well insulated with nice hardwood floors, insulation, walls, windows, pluming, running water etc, AC and toilets lol. just depends on your budget.
@blooddonor70 sorry, by wild animals I was referring to barn animals like cows and horses. Still gross to me. Maybe that is why tree huggers smell all the time too.
@fr3d420 I've gt two of them. They smell alright like Cedar the floors are made of it. Smells like fresh cut cedar. I kimd of like it. I use them for tools sheds and storage at the goat farm. Those insulated ones would be great form homes. Bury them under ground and no tornado or weather event will ever bother you! As long as your not in a flood plane!
great, why dont more people do this instead of buying regular ship containers and adding the expense of self insulating?? where to get that great of a deal on the shipping container? im in the same area.

I wonder how good these containers would be for making a subterranean home or at least berm.

@Horathgar42 a lot of people use them for underground shelters, wine storage, or just basements.

Since these containers are made of metal would it not be dangerous to live in one during a thunderstorm?

@udollsbabygirl1 No, not if the container is grounded.

It's a refrigerator container, so it probably does have that much insulation.

@brewswain
It's achievable now with spray on insulation paint. It costs a lot more though.
