This song was written as a response to the poem "to joy" by Friedrich Schiller, and Beethoven was so inspired by it, he was motivated to compose this masterpiece. He even said he was going to make something that would match the beauty of the poem, if it was even possible.
One of the things I thank Evangelion the most, is that it made me gain a love for classical music. While I've been expanding my music library, this track in particular was, and still is, my favourite.
Perfect when dysfunctional teenagers piloting giant bio-robots are stabbing themselves to death.
I pretty much have found all of the Evangelion OSTs ripped/encoded in FLAC on a site & the Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0 Special Edition OST done the same way on another site
This song worked brilliantly with the last 'proper' episode of NGE. Without the visual however, the song sounds different, not bad, but different. Thx for the upload.
Whew, that violin and cello duet at 5:05 is pretty rough. The contrast of such the lovely song and the scratchy soloist with a strong rumbling cello came on a bit strong.
You know, it's quite amusing when people refer to a piece of classical music as "song", especially when that piece of music(Beethoven's symphony, in this case) is anything but a song.
The proper term is symphony, a piece of music in sonata form that is written for orchestra. If the sonata is written for piano, it would be called piano sonata. For example, Beethoven wrote 9 symphonies and 32 piano sonatas. He also wrote songs(poems set to music), but they are properly known as lieder(German), or art songs. Classical music is very different from everyday pop music, because technically it is written in strict forms(e.g. sonata form, theme and variations, rondo, etc.)
Technically classical music demands a great deal of ingenuity, inventiveness and skills to write and perform. People usually regard classical music as yesterday's hit, but this is generally a misconception. Because even in the old days, classical music was largely accessible only to the elite classes in society (nobles, monarchies, rich people and intellegentsia etc.) It was only in the middle of 19th century that classical music gradually gained audience among the middle class.
A timeless artist composes music that transcends generations, genres, and classes: yet feeble criticism of a stranger's pleasure is the basis of your amusement. Insecure rants, spawned in jealousy, are ugly to any ear.
Who is jealous here? I agree with you that timeless music transcends generations and genres. Western art music (as I prefer to call it)has evolved over centuries and had been an elite music form (whether you like the term or not, it's not up to you) since the classical period. It is an art, and to fully appreciate a work of art you need at least a modicum of understanding of the basic vocabulary and background information in it.
Any serious listener would want to invest some time and energy in this knowledge acquisition process to make his or her musical journey more intellectually informed and rewarding. Most ppl would agree with me on that.
Very true as is true for all genres. I recently have been attempting to become more knowledge about hip-hop and find this to be especially true. If you understand some of the culture and background you appreciate the music that much more.
Perhaps not the best example, but the most current and easiest to make a comparison with.
i would like to kill the world while im listening this music :D

Joy all creatures drink
At the breasts of nature;
All good, all bad
Follow her trail of roses.
Kisses she gave us, and wine,
A friend, proved in death;
Pleasure was given to the worm,
And the cherub stands before God.
Before God!
