God it just makes me sick how people can just leave their pets. They warned you a huge hurricane was coming! How can people be heartless as to leave these poor creatures who depend on you behind? Especially locked in a house or tied to a chain where they cant even get away?! I know to some they are "just animals" but they are FAMILY, would you leave your family behind? THANK everyone who helped save these babies and gave them a new chance at life when the families they loved left them for dead!
I adopted a Katrina dog from our local SPCA here in NH, 12/2005. She is in this video, she is around the 4:40 mark MAXine back then, now MAGGIE. I knew she had been treated for various infections but other than what I had seen on the news at the time I couldn't even imagine what she had been through. She was slow to trust us and to this day needs to take medication to deal with heavy rain or thunder/lightening storms. Maggie is doing GREAT. Thank you for volunteering to help the animals.

They are animals. I mean it's sad that they are suffering becuase I don't like animals to suffer, but human lives are more important. They seemed more invested in saving animals than men women and children.

Update on a dog in this video! The small brown dog with a cast on his leg was one I took care of! I sent him to my personal vet in Atlanta, where he had pins and plates put in his leg. 8 weeks later he went to West Palm Beach, FL to his new home...with the fireman who rescued him in Mississippi. His new Dad was with the National Guard and was told to leave "Ditch" behind, but he couldn't. I got the call to keep this dog safe until he could come home.. Ditch is now HUGE and much loved!
god bless all of you who took the time to rescue all of these animals. now i sit here and watch this video and i regret every day that i did not lend my hands to help the needy animals of New Orleans

that is sooooooo sad! if i ever lost my dogs i dont know what i would do. even tho this sounds a little crazy...I would help my animals in a storm before i would help myself. I actually cant stand to see animals get hurt more than i cant stand to see people get hurt
This is another terrific video. We too have been very motivated by what happened to the pet-human families in the Storm. The people at Animal Rescue New Orleans -- ARNO -- is still reuniting people and they're amazing. Our new video was created entirely by people affected by the Storm -- everyone donated their time because we still want to try to call attention to what's going on. that's very cool... I haven't been able to connect with many people that were at LaMar Dixon when I was after I returned to Chicago. the 2 people that I did rescue work in New Orleans with both live in California. It was so funny, though, when I watched the video! flashbacks! oh my god! I saw our van!!! hahaha.

I am a cat person, and the only dogs I love are Pits or Pit mixes. A few months ago I heard of a Pit mix, Zeus, who had come from Karina, and had been adoped back then But his new owner fell on hard times, and Zeus went to animal contron (NYCACC). He didnt find a home, so he was killed. He suffered through the water and starvation in New Orleans. Only to end up being killed for lack of a home in NYC. blame it on the petshop purse dogs. I do.
What can I say? This video is so touching. I cried watching it. You did a wonderful thing to help those poor scared creatures. We lost everything to Katrina in New Orleans and I thank God that we took our cats and dog when we evacuated. If we had left them behind they would have drowned when our house flooded to the ceiling. It makes me cry just to think about it. You did a heroic thing. Thank you so much for caring about the "beasts". You have earned many stars in your crown!!!!!

also wanted to say that Every 1 wanted 2 do the right thing but didn't know how or what. Sat in my living room that Tue night listening to the radio(no power)sobbing uncontrollably b/c I was helpless-45 miles away totally helpless. You couldn't get in the city. MPs with machine guns at the LaPlace exit. devastating. Anyway God love all people and pets affected and all those who gave their time, efforts, love and care 2 help. As a lifelong Louisianan and pet lover, it is sincerely appreciated.
Let me clarify the "no one in Louisiana would take them". They shut down the Gonzales shelter 3 days earlier to accomodate a horse show. No one in LA had time to find room at that time. The ones transported were ones that needed overnight accomodating. Thanks for your comment.
You are awesome but 2 clarify: "No one in LA would take them."Not true.I live here and volunteered at LD.Fostering was not allowed for fear of not reuniting-valid yet frustrating concern. They were only sending 2 other states and 2 organizations who had some kind of "official" capacity.1 of the HSUS vets okd me 2 foster dogs after 2 wks of begging only b/c he agreed animals were dying from the heat and he had my ID info. There was a list a mile long of local people wanting to foster.
8,500 were w/o owners. -1000 found their owners or a home. From that one shelter area, 7,500 adoptable cats & dogs were killed for lack of homes, mainly b/c many ppl think its ok to buy pets, while others languish in shelters & r forced to die b/c that available home was taken by a pet who was purchased. When u buy a pet,you kill another just like it in a shelter. It SICKENS ME that the USA hasn't banned buying and breeding of pets.
Wow!! U must feel really proud:) Alot of the animals, looked really happy. Maybe they were trying to say thanks with either those big eyes, that cute mouth sorta smiling....Good job!!=)
I hope that as time moves forward, as we remember this tragic event and swear that it will NEVER happen again-that maybe those affected can begin to heal.
No words can express my graditude to you and your fellow workers for what you did. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. "...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Raplh Waldo Emerson Terri you have succeeded!
starbabe58 says "god bless the usa"??? It was the USA government that caused the Katrina mess,& caused 1000's of pets & ppl 2 die,& those that didn't, were forced 2 live w/o food or water 4 days & weeks! The USA ABANDONED those pets & ppl! The President DID NOTHING for a week! The only time the trucks rolled in was 5 min b4 the President finally got his Hillbilly ass down there 2 speak and make a fanfair!THE USA ABANDONED THE GULF COAST.God bless SHIT.
A reminder that there are good people in the world, that will go to the ends of the earth to help an animal. God's grace be with you yesterday, today and always.

I hope that as time moves forward, as we remember this tragic event and swear that it will NEVER happen again-that maybe those affected can begin to heal.
Thank you for this video.

starbabe58 says "god bless the usa"??? It was the USA government that caused the Katrina mess,& caused 1000's of pets & ppl 2 die,& those that didn't, were forced 2 live w/o food or water 4 days & weeks! The USA ABANDONED those pets & ppl! The President DID NOTHING for a week! The only time the trucks rolled in was 5 min b4 the President finally got his Hillbilly ass down there 2 speak and make a fanfair!THE USA ABANDONED THE GULF COAST.God bless SHIT.
