  • I think I was there but the problem is that when I was 15 years old ( at the time ) I was always high so give or take this rocks and I hope I was there!

  • :0 look how long his hair is here

  • OMG I keep saying how i hope he plays the Jazz Fest one day and I had no idea that he already has!

  • Ask 100 blues fans who is best and you will get just as many answers. The history of the blues has so many founders and masters it is mind numbing. Ask 100 blues fans who the best current blues player is and JB's name will come up time and time again. Simply amazing!

  • OMG who cares if he honors SRV by emulating him some. Pick any musician or band and I will tell you someone they have adapted a style from. Love SRV but dont you think he copied Albert & Freddie King? Shallow thinking! (Thanks to a friend who hosts a blues show) I get hundreds of demo cd's from around the country of new groups and musicians monthly. I challenge anyone to provide a specific example of someone better right now out there. Ask Buddy Guy his thoughts on JB...trust his judgment?

  • 1:50 - 2:13 makes me wet

  • I met a waiter in Perpignan, who told me about this guy,

I know man I am a little late, but your right, his fingers fly!

  • I met a waiter in Perpignan, who told me about this guy,

I know man I am a little late, but your right, his finger's fly!

  • bravo.

  • Guitrmn,

iwould put Joe B up against ANY guitar player you think is better. He will kick their butts back to mommies basement for more practice. And it is obvious that "john whats his name" is such an amzing guitar player no one has heard of him and those that have, can't even remembr his name. He must be something, eh. You have no idea what you are talking about here dummy. Get out of mommies basement and see him live or even just listen to him..Oh mommy is calling you had better go...

  • sorry but this is nothing special-people have been playing the blues for a long time-theres guys all over the place that can play like this-im sure hes a nice guy but it fails to impress me-john whats his face plays better than this guy,and he aint that great either-no-one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public and heres your proof-just sayin!!

  • @guitrmn10 maybe you should type in joe bonamassa bloodline on youtube . bb king himself says that he is one of a kind ....need i say anymore?

  • I play humbucker guitars, but have to admit that a persons personality comes through with single coils, plus more grit and noise from the instrument itself..

  • he gets the same sound out of the les paul.. the sound comes from the hands ! man %99 percent the man %1 the guitar and the rig whatever.

  • I love his tone on a strat. So much more character than on the Les Paul (which also sounds amazing -- don't get me wrong. )

  • I hope he gives thanks to SRV. The majority of solo was copied from him.

  • Great Music Joe, love how you work with kids, see you in Montreal. YEAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Clapton used to be god.....

Shame we don't see Joe use a strat nowadays

  • @simonvillette lol you're a fuckin idiot...To all you clowns who bitches because he doesn't use a strat all the time..get over it. A Stratocaster doesn't give you the blues, it's all about your fingers and your technique. If SRV picked up a Gibson, he'd still have his tone, because alot of the tone is in the fingers. And blues is not about have single coil pick ups on a strat. Blues is about feeling and having fun; irregardless of whether you're using buckers or single coils...Dumbasses

  • @MrApocalyte I don't consider myself to be either a fucking idiot or a dumbass. Read the comments before insulting the authors. I wrote 'shame we don't see Joe use a strat nowadays'. At no point in this sentence do I wish for Joe to use only a strat. I was lucky enough to see Joe live last year and he had a rack of about 15 gibsons. I would simply like him to play other makes of guitar now and then. Joe would make a broom handle with a piece of string play the blues. Grow up.

  • @simonvillette But the point is, why is it a shame that you don't see him using a strat??

  • @MrApocalyte It's a shame because a strat can be used to make magnificent music, just as messeurs Hendrix, Vaughan, Clapton, Knopfler etc etc have proved. Just as other guitars can do as well. Joe, as this video shows, is also a master of the strat therefore I think it would be nice for him to use a wider range of material for his shows. Nowadays his electric guitars for his shows are almost 100 percent Gibsons. He doesn't show his full range of versatility. Not that this stops me listening.

  • @simonvillette I didn't mean to sound harsh eh, so I apologize for that I was immature, but I have to admit it still it irritates me how you assume magnificent music is created with a strat. If Hendrix, Clapton and SRV had used a Gibson, everyone would think a Gibson is the best for blues/rock.

A single coil is ideal for blues, and I actually prefer strats myself, but I don't think using a strat would make him more versatile, give him a better a tone, or make him a better player.

  • @MrApocalyte I'm not saying that a strat is better than a Gibson, or that it is better for blues or rock. I'm simply saying that I think that Joe's (brilliant) live shows would be just a spot better if he used some other guitars. I'd love to see him dust off some of his 300 gretches, rickenbackers, teles, schecters whatever. The public can then decide if they prefer one sound to another. I personally have no preference. I'd quite happily watch him play a beat up acoustic for 2 hours.

  • @simonvillette

the gibson has this totally electric sound, for lack of a better desciption. He went through an entire fleet of gibsons at the show....everything but an SG and a non-reverse firebird!

  • Clapon used to be god.

Shame we don't see Joe use a strat nowadays.

  • Mix of SRV and Gary Moore;;;;; magic

  • @bandana32 dude chill out it actually does the tone is identical show some decency and stop hating on all of this guys videos, he has a lot of talent.

  • daaaaamn. sounds just like SRV in the beginning

  • 'you upset me baby*, he, its better write the name of the song on top, cause many people like me love this music, but dont know the name of every bluessong in the world....

  • meraviglioso!!!!

  • JOE C A N PLAY...GREAT PLAYER,GOOD GUY TOO!!! HE'S EVEN BETER NOW,

THAN IN THIS VIDEO...(Hard To Believe!)!!!

    KEEP PLAYIN' THEM BLUES JOE!!!

  • You upset me baby...

  • thanks for helping us spread the word friends. Please go to Joe's Official Channel and subscribe!

  • he has this wonderful ability to separate his styles. it's another great thing to be versatile like he is, but what i meant is he can choose whenever he wants to play in a stevie ray style, or his own style that he usually does with his les paul. and both of them sound amazing.

not every guitar player can do that. we just get used to the phrasings, its like our fingers are doing it naturally without thinking

  • SICK!

  • if he ain't da man, he'll do

    until he comes along

  • I like!

  • Joe Bonamassa looking like Rory Gallagher Playing Like Stevie Ray Vaughan

  • Joe in a Rory gallagher look!!!

  • This song was clearly very much inspired by SRV's "Cold Shot"...

  • @TurnAndTrustInJesus lol i was just thinkin the same exact thing

  • Joe B. - be the shit maynards!! Amazing chap- his playing goes to eleven.

  • Joe is the dogs bollocks and is the greatest live gig today.

  • @Islwynpaul And he's got unbelievable tekkers, shit hot!

  • gotta love that strat!

  • christ, hes playing that strat so well its gone super sayan

  • Fuckin shit, I luv this guy!!

  • he and ana popovic are the best contemporaries I know - has anyone more suggestions? welcome.

  • Anybody ever think he might have been influenced by Gary Moore?

  • Thats the problem with blues..no originality. I'm patiently waiting for someone to come out like a breath of fresh air with something new & inspiring.

  • @greasegat Listen to Matt Schofield or Derek Trucks.

  • Is he copying SRV or what? He's a want to be.All this is SRV licks.

  • @warhoops Blues is blues its all the same, just fricking enjoy it

  • @JWBails Your right!

  • so boring.....

  • Joe on this song reminds me of Susan Tedeschi's rendition of "Little By Little"--at least I think that's the song title.

  • very heavily influenced by srv

  • I love Jaz!

Who want to learn Japanese or Chinese?

  • 4:20-5:25 whoah, wtf??!!

  • at 3:00-those are volume swells, Roy Buchanan first began doing both volume and tone swells back in the late 60's, but who's counting?

  • @1954tele Robert Fripp was an early pioneer of this technique, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the early jazz players used it also. Steve Howe of Yes is one of the best at it, although he generally uses a volume pedal.Combined with digital delay it is a great effect.A part of the song "The Gates of Delirium",called "Soon",by Yes, is one of the best examples of the technique by him. Joe B. is obviously strongly influenced by SRV;comes through very strongly on this cut. Thanks for posting!

  • what a showman !1

  • how does he do that at 3:00?

  • he uses his volume he has on the strat

  • is it just me or is this guy better than srv ???!

  • @buchananstreet it's just you

  • @Kastralis

The pedal he's using controls the attack of the notes giving it that crying sound. Various companies make various versions:)

  • HE is volume fading. When he picks the note, he rolls the volume with his little finger giving it that whailing type sound.

  • Volume knob swells and then he uses his Boss DD3 delay pedal as he goes on.

  • blows my mind.

  • That's the blues ... recycled riffs!

  • We Montrealers can't tell the difference between Blues and Jazz. lol

  • LOL ... yeah but I'll bet you know the difference between off-sides and a two line pass (RIP in the NHL now) Go Pens!

  • sounds like Kings Highway too by KWS

  • not at all.

  • sounds like a kenny wayne sheppard song.......the good die young...to be exact.

  • hey what song is this ?

  • you upset me baby

  • Great playing. Yes. But have to be careful & not go over the top. Its gets a little boring after a while.

  • that is a rather SRV style solo but SRV also ripped a lot of those licks from his heroes such as albert king

  • this guy is gr8

  • DONOTTAWAGUITAR

  • so gutted he has taken strats out his rig :(

  • beautiful strat tones....

    be well, happy, and peaceful.

    Bela Ray

  • KILLER BLUES GITAR PLAYER!!!

  • camera is too slow for JB's hands :)

  • Why the hell did I get thumbs down? 2:12 to 2:55 straight outta fucking cold shot. The amount of SRV licks in this would make KWS blush.

  • He's just paying homage to SRV, there's nothing wrong with that is there? Trust me, Joe Bonamassa has created his own style.. he was purposely playing that solo like SRV

  • I wonder how you can play hard blues without any SRV influence even if you don't want to tribute him.

Plus I think it would be an honor for him to read that we hear SRV listening to him !

  • "The amount of SRV licks in this would make KWS blush."

Huh? There's a handful of licks in the whole damn solo that I'd call "SRV licks", and even that's a bit of a stretch, because the blues vocabulary being used here predates both Bonamassa and Vaughn.

  • I was at the jazz festival this year, it was sick. Unfortunately, I hardly got to see anyone preform.

  • Wow, note for note cold shot solo..

  • first class, .......

  • this is going to sound reall ybad but what did i say that i got 6 thumbs down for? i hoestly do not remember im not trying to be a dick

  • He isn't doing anything at all new, and he is certainly no genius, but I enjoy his performances anyway. I like his playing.

  • Nothing in blues is new. It can all be traced back to early 20th century or earlier.

  • Idiot.

  • Physician, heal thyself.

  • o lol my bad...

  • haha. that made me laugh.

  • man he was skinny here

  • Hope I dont get flamed...but I wonder if SRV hand't died...would players like Bonamassa, Mayer, Kenny Wayne, et al be able to get away with sounding like him? (I like those players, mind you)

  • Absolutely and don't forget, SRV was influenced heavily by other players, mainly Albert King. I don't think sounds so much like Stevie and has found his own voice, he's absolutely awesome live. Not sure about Kenny Wayne though, he started off as a virtual SRV clone. Mayer I can't stand, regardless if he's playing like Stevie or not.

  • May i ask why you cant stand Mayer?

    And to prompen3.

Well Thief is a harsh word.

I would rather call it borrowing.

Its like craftsmen using the same tool.

That doesn't mean what comes out in the end is the same though :)

  • His playing does nothing for me, I don't hear anything appealing in the notes he choses nor in his tone. And he sings in a style that would be more fitting to a boy group than a blues artist. There's just nothing I like about his music and I've really tried to find something I liked, so far unsuccesfully.

  • hes god and very melodic but bonamassa is way better in his playing and soul

    mayer is more poser

  • i agree dude,SRV's paying can kinda be simplified to Albert king and Hendrix, those were his idols and he played like a mixed version of the 2, but tstill did find his own middle ground/connecting point between them. and i dont think JB is a SRV clone either, he has his own style to me, especially if you listen to him now(i think the SRV clone status is a little more arguable in his earlier stuff tho, but not at all wiht his new playing). he is insanely good

  • Interesting question!

Maybe the flow of the bluez just flows on.

    undepending of the MazterGuitarizts?

A talent is always a talent!!

Of course we're all influenced by a whole life's listening to the best..in our class

The style is no essential, it's the

    MUZIC

A genious is always a genoius.....

  • @sirgerry Mayer doesn't even come close to copying SRV. This is almost down right plagiarism.

  • @cofree22 I don't see this as plagiarism, I see this as a tip of the hat in recognition to a founding father and a ground breaker. It isn't like Bonamassa can't play anything else! He's just having fun and exploring styles. I see nothing wrong with this and I'm sure Stevie would be very flattered. Y'all play nice now, y'hea? (Brothers)

  • I'm not really that big a blues fan, but this kid's just a fucking genius. Even if you don't like this stuff, it's still obvious that he's way out there alone. It's quite scary that he also seems to be getting better.

  • Simply awesome!

  • Yes, I was there man..

I've seen hundreds of blues axe men arround this place but this is the real thing

Joe taught every bod a lesson that night and showed us that guitar playing is all about the soul

that night changed my musical life

  • just starting to get into blues this is an awesome song.

  • thats awesome man, getting people into blues is one of joe bonamassa's BIG goals. its hard to listen to him and his playing and not like it though haha

  • yea man this is awsome so much better than angry thrash metal or death metal or scremo... there is emotion in the music and the guitar and its not just angry.

  • yeah i really like blues and rock music, but i do also like thrash and death metal (i like most all metal actually). i suppose thats because those other genres are also very emotionally and feel based in their own ways (i think they are emotional but just different emotions i.e. anger). so i suppose im attracted to music with emotion. its not limited to that tho, i like pretty much all kinds of music, i just like blues and metal most

  • SRV forever!!!

  • Why do people argue... Just enjoy the music for fucks sake!

  • that's a bullshit thing to say. Go fuck a hobo

  • the cold shot is sick at 2:13

  • one of the best for me

  • Always impresses me this guy!.

  • this whole song is amazing, but 1:45-2:15 is ragin energy!

  • Im going to get slated for saying this, but i think Joe's best playing was with Bloodline

  • Sounds great; I particularly like this arrangement. More SRV influence than Joe usually puts in, but nice too. I get sick of hearing the Eric Johnson stuff.....

  • cool

  • He puts 110% into it everytime and fans love it.

  • You upset me baby by BB King. He took it and rearranged it into this masterpiece.

  • what song is this?

  • You upset me baby

  • Wow. I'm gonna use this as a template and call it "how to play a solo properly"... the development is great, the climax, the drop to quiet, the follow up build up, having a band that punches on your punches ( not some lame 'pickup' band) and a proper outro. No overplaying, no fat, just the goods.

  • This is VERY much like 'so excited' at el mocambo.

  • Yep glad someone keeping music like that alive

  • it is he even stole som licks from it at the breakdown " around 2:00

  • The thief!

  • well all musicians are thiefs in one way ore another so it's all good ;)

  • amazing stuff - only a handfull of people that play this good with real power and soul..steve vai..chantel mcgregor..but not many.

  • ACE

  • I can remember seeing this video about a year and a half ago and thinking "He sounds too much like SRV" (Im a huge bonamassa fan now mind) but now when i see this video it sounds like Bonamassa, some of Stevies licks, but the sound is all Bonamassas.

  • He now refuses to use strats because of it.

  • This is good stuff...I haven't really heard him much before. I like the arrangement of B.B. King's 1950s hit, too. He obviously has a deep feeling for music. I must check out his CDs.

It's ironic that he's at Montreaux here and playing loudly in a SRV-based style. SRV and Double Trouble were booed at this event back in the early 1980s - and they weren't playing at anywhere near their usual stage volume.

  • Actually that is Montreal, Quebec. That is the Labatt Blues stage, I played on that stage 5 times. This Jazz Fest is definately a place anyone should go to once in their lives.

  • Thanks for the correction, songnow. I realised that I had made a mistake when I re-read the video byline which refers to Montreal.

Playing there sounds like a great experience - I envy you that! I'll try to get there some day.

  • I like em both i saw joe in memphis was wicked and since srv inst here no more anyways we gott have sumone around

  • Where is the Jazz in that?

  • It's not really but you get lots of different types of music that's related to jazz at jazz festivals all the time. And if there's one style that's most related to jazz it's blues.

  • Thank God for Joe Bonamassa.

  • When I hear Hendrix I recognise Hendrix, same for SRV, Bonamassa, Duarte, Sayce, Gales. They all have something different, like snow flakes. SRV cannot play like Hendrix as Hendrix cannot play like SRV, they all have their little "trade mark", Hendrix was out of space he brought something crazy and new, SRV as bind lots of blues style he learned from Albert King, Lonnie Mack, Freddy King, Hendrix, Buddy Guy, kenny Brurrel so it's hard for young blues guitarists to introduce us to something new.

  • Too much like another braindead snobby purist. You get a thumbs down from me wojtek...

  • lol before he was famous he evolved in my area i never thought he was this big he's like the new stevie ray of our era.

  • Well, the guy is certainly borrowing licks from Stevie's bag, but you think Stevie's bag was all his own? He borrowed too. And I think Joe (possibly) played some of these Stevie replica licks because he adores his music-kind of like how SRV did with Buddy Guy, Guitar Slim, Albert King, etc. I actually enjoyed how @ the 3:18 mark he plays a couple licks that are right off of a slow part of a "Cold Shot" solo SRV did on his Live @ Austin City Limits dvd. 2 me it's just a way of paying homage.

  • I don't like stealing real lead parts but he had fun and the crowd also.

Among the new generation he's a giant player. I wish I could play like him. Stevie was out of this world and unique.

  • Do you ever wonder why the majority of your comments gets massive thumbs down grga888? Bonamassa is certainly not a school boy or an amateur compared to SRV. Maybe influence and fame-wise, but technically I'm afraid Bonamassa might very well be the better player. Now, you're entitled to think that SRV spoke more to you. I feel that way anyway, but claiming Bonamassa is an amateur compared to SRV is ignorant at best.

  • @TGF87 He aint that good, just my opinion.

  • No offence, but blues is actually quite a limiting style.

There's only so many licks that could actually exist.

  • listin to a cat named johnny hiland, he expands everything about blues

  • haha yea so true, Joe tends to do that to when he bring in jazz licks etc, in this solo i do agree he really is ripping of SRV, but he does hav his own style, listen to some of more heavier tracks to see what i mean

  • Hi guitarsimon1...I feel that blues is only as limited as the player's imagination and expressiveness. Therefore - and no offense - I don't really agee with you.

  • Woah, did i say that. That was naive of me, sorry dude, you've hit it on the nail there. I read an interview with Joe himself, and he basically said that the blues could be anything the player shapes it to be.

A friend of mine said a similar thing, i asked him 'what do you think the blues is in essence', and he replied 'freedom of expression'

but yeah, you got it just right there, that was a silly thing of me to say, i guess i was speaking from a technical point of view, though a very stunted one

  • Thanks for your very quick response and there was no need to apologise..

If you haven't done so already, please listen to and enjoy Blind Blake, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red, Elmore James, Albert King, B.B. King, Peter Green, Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Derek Trucks, Hubert Sumlin, Alex Shultz, T-Bone Walker, Robert Lockwood (particularly with Little Walter & Sonny Boy Williamson) - to name but a few!

I like your friend's description - very eloquent.

    Take care, best wishes

  • at least their are people out their to keep SRV's legacy going.... it is a compliment to stevie they are... keep the blues alive

  • grga888,

why don't u jst dig up SRV and do dirty things to his rotten corpse.

    Joe Bonamassa rocks....

  • ....super..

  • strat!

  • Heart & Soul !! Brilliant!!

  • Ma alla fine, è così importante se sia meglio JB o SRV???
