@hemmelight I can't remember the name of the chord, but Åkerfeldt said in some old (Blackwater Park years) interview that was one of his favorite chords. The very first chord in The Drapery Falls is the same style. And it *is* a great chord.
Can anyone explain to me the difference between a normal PRS and a SE PRS? On the main website of PRS they don't really explain the difference very good.
The SE's are made in Korea using a production line process with standard woods and materials.
The "normal" PRS's are made in the USA by master luthiers with higher quality materials and some specialty and exotic tone woods and techniques, and more attention to detail. It takes a lot longer to make a regular PRS model than it does to crank an SE out on the assembly line in Korea. They're both great quality guitars, but the SE's cost a lot less.
mikael doesn't know his theory, but still writes mean riffage. fredrik is such a g, doesnt show off about knowing insane theory, but then rips your face of with gods theory
Heritage isn't a terrible album, but I wouldn't call it a good album either. It's interesting on the first listen, and seems incredibly innovative.. But as it moves forward, it just feels bland. And incredibly un-Opeth. This might as well been a Mikael solo album.
Nonetheless, this whole song is amazing and one of the only ones I still listen to or even enjoy anymore off Heritage.
I thought this album was amazing the first few days, too. Then it hit me.. it wasn't. Sadly.
"We don't know theory or anything, but this is a combination of lydian and phyrgian dominant" Sounds liek you really don't know theory. These guys are amazing!!
I love their music! It's been my favourite band for years, still is.
I like the metal Opeth more, but I really the last album though. I tried playing Master's Apprentices frim tabs. Starts out pretty easy, but gets way too hard for me later on.
why wont PRS make signature guitars for hard-rock/metal guitarists other than SE's... Dont get me wrong the high end ones are fine anyway, but a couple of high end metal signatures would be much appreciated!
"even we don't know anything about theory and stuff....but this is a combination of lydian mode and phrygian dominant...and ends with a diminished run starting on F." lol, No theory knowledge? riiiiiight
@bubywashere I know, I just thought it was ironic that he would say that they don't know any theory, and then explain how the next passage was based in the lydian and phrygian dominant modes. lol
@fru1tbooter14 I guess he means that Mikael doesn't know theory whatsoever, Fredrik does...but Mikael write the riffs so he plays them by pure logic and musical instinct
Fredrik knows a lot more than Mikael, but I think they mean they don't use "theory" when they're writing -- and then after they write it, they will use theory to explain the riffs in lessons.
@fru1tbooter14 anyone who reads a magazine like Guitar World might pick that up; Fred's not going to talk about harmonizing the scales with chords, explain the note relationships, meters, the tonics and outside notes etc. He's just combining two scales and doing a run countless metal guitarists might do at one time or other. The statements are really all about technique , rather than musical construction.
@fru1tbooter14 I think he meant to say that they don't know everything about theory ha ha. Though I think Frederik probably knows more about it than Mikael since I think Frederik did some formal training in the past and also taught guitar to students.
@fru1tbooter14 i think what he meant was that Mikael doesn't write based on theory because Mikael basicaly knows none. in a lesson once, he was asked, "what chord is that?' and he replied "i don't know but i use it all the time" Fredrik is more of a theory oriented player but he mainly uses it for breaking riffs down rather than writing.
@ARTOFWAR2008 Lol, you need to go listen to Opeth. The riff out of context sounds odd, but as a whole i think you'll dig it. That is... if you like prog metal.

One of the best and only riffs on the album. Just because its not major scale doesnt mean its ugly. Your ears need tuning.
DerekBallesty 3 months ago 68
@DerekBallesty häxprocess, i feel the dark and folklore? But youre right...only because something is dissonant only a bit it is not ugly.
