Speaking as a lifeguard & Aquatics Instructor... I'd hate to rescue one of those girls if she cracks her neck and gets a spinal... the amount of training it took to prevent mishaps like that from happening alone... wow...
RubyKeeler, Esther Williams and many others have said that Busby Berkeley would literally KILL you to get the scene. To this day, seeing those women diving from those heights and landing 2 inches from each other gives me the chills. Almost 80 years later still awe inspiring and riviting to watch!!
There is a much better Version on youtube but without the soundtrack. Take the soundtrack of this video slow it down by 0.96 and it matches the other video. When I post the combination on youtube it gets blocked because of copyright.
I've seen most of Busby's numbers, but this one is a stand out. The overhead shot of the fountain (of legs) is unique. The sheer length of the sequence shows how well respected Berkely was early on.
I bet no one would be able to remake this film now, without all the CGI and nonsense. It would cost more money to perfect this as good as the origional.
Absolutely wonderful. The depression and millions in poverty, but if you could manage a dime you could escape for a few hours with this incredible entertainment.
Berkeley and performers like the incredibly talented Shirley Temple helped America, and the world, get through it all. Thanks for this.
Kylie Minogue was inspired by this music to a projection of an act of Aphrodite Les Folies Tour:) ... Look for On A Night Like This / All The Lovers:)
I have loved these old Busby Berkeley musicals ever since I discovered them in the '60s on a local old movie channel in LA. Of course, they were not that old then; like watching Star Wars, Indiana Jones or E.T. today. The Busby Berkeley production numbers are probably the longest (time wise) and creative production numbers in the history of film. (And all this was supposed to be happening on a theatre stage!) No one makes any thing this good in this day of quick, cheap and vulgar.
Thank you so much for posting this lovely musical number. I really have a great love for Pre-Code films and especially the work of Busby Berekley. He was a genius and so far ahead of his time as far as staging dances went.
so sweet

I wish I could have seen the faces of the people seeing it in the theatre at the time. Its still jaw dropping today, but imagine back then !!!

I cannot think of a finer Berkeley number than this gem, even "Shadow Waltz"

I love the number but the video quality is really terrible. Why would you post a video of this great production in such poor quality ?

@expos73 Someone had up "I Only Have Eyes For You" from a MINT PRINT but the powers-that-be took it down, of course.

Not to mention, a great fountain. Although watersports are not my interest, how did they get the stream so...

This is a very powerful number. Women in charge, and not a guy in sight. A nd the best overhead shot ever.

This must be Busby's masterpiece. More than Shadow Waltz. (?)
