Takin Off is brilliant, and this is in a whole new direction.. he could've done the same bop record twice but Herbie has never played it safe.. every album was something new.
This wasn't his debut album. His first was Takin' Off (1962), and THAT was every bit a breath taking debut as this would have been. For some other great debut albums, check out Joe Henderson's Page One and Freddie Hubbard's Open Sesame!
Brilliant.
