  • he said he will continue to use his pencil as long as he can.

  • is there a sub version of this interview?

  • miyazaki looks really good here. as he has aged he has grown into the perfect look. his dark brows and white hair with beard has the same charming and refined effect of many of his characters,

  • It's odd to me that people think of drawn animation as "old fashioned" and ask directors like Miyazaki "How come you don't want to work in CG?" Drawn animation and CG are two different variants of the same species. While it's stretching things to say that they're two separate mediums, they are two distinct approaches to telling a story. One approach just happens to be more recently invented than the other, that's all.

And hand-drawn animation is Miyazaki's chosen medium. Simple as that.

  • @Marbles471 To me Hand Drawn is more creative :D

  • @futureanimatior that is too stupid. How is it more creative if it's the same damn thing?

  • @Marbles471 You're right. Wallace&Gromit and the Wer-Rabbit won an oscar and it uses one of the oldest animation technique in history.

    Who's old-fashioned now? lol

  • I love Hand Drawn Animation more than Computer Animation. But Pixar does good with computer animation probabily the only film though that I really admire in Computer Animation is How to train your dragon very good movie.

  • I want to do pencil animation badly does it take longer? Miyazaki is my biggest inspiration.

  • @Defictionalize They both take a really long time to make. If your going to do a pencil animation yourself you need to know that you will need extream a large ammount of paper. A 5 minute short animation video is like over 2000 pictures.

  • @Defictionalize I would think so. Im not sure i guess it matters how long and how much details and so on it all matters but i think its easier to use the computer because more opitions.

  • Amazing imagination!

  • Hand-drawn animation is dying art, sad but true. Miyazaki is one of the people who help keep it alive.

  • They should really just put subtitles on here. The voices going in and out are annoying. And also I like to here the japanese language. It's very soothing.

  • hey did anyone else realize he looks a lot like Colonel Sanders (creator of KFC). #LOL

  • @regigis ya, and i even noticed that when i first saw a picture of him! but ya, hes pretty awesome.

  • Hes not laughing for no apparent reason hes laughing cuz his microphone keeps switching off.. probably cuz he forgot to flip it on when he was gonna talk.

  • I use flash to animate, practically speaking I am something between an traditional animator and computer animator.I draw with a tablet, which is almost the same as traditional drawing. The thing is,it has a plus side to it.I can endlessly test my animation, instead of scanning thousands of papers each time. Also, this allows me to have a more leisurely approach, and animate for my own enjoyment too.I just wanted to say, computer animation isn't "evil" it can be like traditional animation, but easier.

  • @Jannto It will never have as much potential as a pencil and paint, pencil crayons or even crayons. Computer animation is... real, but not physically. When i see a characters forehead or the wall of a building that has been colored by clicking on a paint can then clicking inside the spaces, it just has no value. people can sense that.

  • his movies are amazing! The only turn off is that noah cyrus was a voice actor :I The role did not suite her

  • 500ncb I totally agree

  • BAD SOUND.

  • i prefer using pencil and using computer in someways to heip improving the graphics looks..For example i like the old captain Tsubasa but then they change the graphics coz they completly depend on computers for drawing and doing other stuff..so i don't like the modern way they use to do anime cartoon...i agree with mr. Hayao Miyazaki.

  • @ahmedao

agree totally. pencil & water color are more human,

  • i might pee on my pants if i see him.

  • His movies have impacted me in a special way. I love his movies.

  • chah! hes a freakkin genuis!!! i would pass out if i met him!!

  • hes so cool! i love his movies, hes very talented. =]

  • tlak i nitalian b**ch! :D hahaha

  • mi san is so cute.

  • i love how miyasaki will laugh for no apparent reason , he's like me. i laugh because i think of something funny and then everyone around me wonders why i am luaghing lol he makes me happy to see that

  • ^__^

  • inside joke. lol

  • Ink and paint all the way! It better embodies the soul of the creators!

  • i can agree with that but it takes a whole lot longer when you do it all without computer help , i think using some computer help can be good but i wouldnt want to take the joy away from do hand art on paper with a pencil and whatever

  • When and if I become a animator I will draw using pencil. I like computer animation for some movies but I always found pencil animation the best. 3D hurts my eyes so I would never do a 3D movie.

  • i want to draw art then put the picture on computer to animate them.

  • @LeeTheDragonRider I agree 3D, does amazing for some animated films. But 2D will forever be the best I don't know why some people can;t just see that. Walt Disney made some of the best 2D's ever made.

  • @futureanimatior What people call 3D is not such, it´s just a simulation, there are no three dimensions on a screen! It is better to say hand drawn animation to what people call "2D", and digital animation to what everyone calls "3D".

Calling hand drawn animation "2D" seems include the notion that one dimension is missing while "3D" includes that third dimension. Actually, it doesn´t, it just simulates it.

  • @MrOrlica People can call Hand Drawn Animation and Computer Animation whatever they like. You don't need to go all out and be a total smart ass about it.

  • @LeeTheDragonRider I hope you make good Hand Drawn movies :D

  • @LeeTheDragonRider you can use a tablet. it wont be 3D

  • @LeeTheDragonRider Do you animate now?

  • @LeeTheDragonRider I think the same way

  • Thank you so much for uploading this with English!!!!

  • ahhh this was great!! Thanks for uploading!!

  • he's genius, i love his films. from Mongolia Anar

  • THANK YOU!!! even HAYAO agrees with drawn animation

  • I can't hear.

  • YES!! :D He confirmed that he will make another film and then maybe more after that!

  • That's Awesome. I love all of Miyazaki's films.

  • Yeah, the change in volume can be a bit annoying, but for distribution to a wider audience, the dubbing into English is welcome.

FYI - This movie was heavily promoted in Japan and I am sure that there are tons of vids in Japanese for you to get Miyazaki-san's views.

  • plz translation japanese lol

  • Good vid, but to be honest I'd prefer it if it wasn't dubbed. I'm not prefectly bilingual but the sudden changes in volume are annoying. If you do have a version that isn't dubbed then please upload it.
