@BjornRiis thx for answer. I'm lefthanded and the only pickguard for my strat that I can found is 3-ply but Black/White/Black which is in my opinion ugly :(. Should I get 1-ply Black to customize my guitar like Gilmour's strat?
just realized after re-learning this solo, (thanks to you), after many years of forgetting, (haven't played it since 94!!!), that the solo he constructs here is very similair in form to his solo on 'time';
slow sustaining fuzzed out bass lines turn to bluesy bendy riffs to arpeggiating and outlining the chord progression to an all out fury of fire and flash!
Very welcome to have a listen to AirwavesJoxfields Vegetable (Elephant ) Man with Joxfields tribute-to-David-Gilmour's-ca-1971-playing guitar at 1.59. If you make a visit; hope you enjoy it! Cheers!
Hi Bjorn, been listening to all your solos on here. I love how some people think you should be some kind of juke box and play gilmour note for note. Kinda missing the point. Like you I like to throw in my own licks here and there although you manage it more subtle than i do. Loved your turning away solo, think I'd better get my finger out and learn it all the way through (some of it's on the brink of how fast I can play) Anyhow thanks for educating me with your excellent web-site, Your the man!
Man your guitar is beautiful. I was at cross iron mills in calgary this year and got the privelage of playing gilmours black strat and all i can say is im jealous. Good work though
Awesome job man ! Love your vibrato work + your SITE is Absofuckinlutely outstanding and i just have to say Thank You ! You make my guitar playing more advanced with all your tones and backing tracks ! Thanx again =) If u haw some time, check out my cover of this. Stay tuned !
Thanks! The bass side should be slightly lower than the treble side. What's important is the lenght between the strings and pickup pole. On vintage style single coils like the Fender CS69 that I'm using the bass side should be about 2.3mm off the pole and the treble about 2mm. See the info from your pickup's manufacturer for details.
Not mean enough for Pompeii version. This sound more like post Wall Gilmour. Les over driver more fuzz. Great playing though, and good feeling! Thats what made Dave so great... It was all about the pauses and phrasing.
This is not how the Pompeii Echoes solo goes and I don't mean in terms of position regarding string and fret. I mean in terms of technicality, some tones are simply missing. It seems that no one on youtube can get this solo right.
Bjorn...amazing job as usual. Thanks for posting. Look forward to more of these in the future. Hope the second album for Airbag is going well. Take care..Dave H.
@BjornRiis hey in the pompei version of echoes it sounds like gilmour is a quarter step up or something? is this the case? when i play along i sound flat and im in perfect tune and my intonation is fine.
@MrReverendgreen If you haven't already, then pay attention to where you are picking the string if it's near the neck you're gonna get a much deeper sound but in this case with much less character, this solo is being picked at the bridge pickup thats why the start sounds so wonderful.
@MrReverendgreen I've looked in to it some more, and it is tuned up about 3 quarters up, at least the high e is tuned 3 quarters up, I haven't figured it all out yet but I will when I have the time. It may not make sense to you that it is half a tone up, but it was different back then, I don't know why, but an e is different now than it was 40 years ago.
@MarcBeckK it would make perfect sense except for one thing...the keyboards. if roger and dave tuned up it would make sense...but then if they did that it wouldnt math the keyboard? im thinking maybe the track was sped up a bit. sometimes that changed the pitch in the old way of recordin
@MrReverendgreen I'm pretty sure the track is not sped up, because it is a live recording and - Bjorn would no more about this - I think the first time they sped up anything was the synthesizer on "On the run" DSM. I would guess that Wrights piano is tuned up too, though it would complicate things a lot(it might just be how the tone was back then). I just know that when I tune my guitar to Gilmour's strat on Live at Pompeii, the tone is half-3/4 quarters of a tone up. The rest I can only guess.
It's not tuned up or down at all but the soundtrack on the film is slightly above normal pitch. I think the original cinema version and some early VHS versions is correct but the later VHS and DVD versions are pitched higher. Floyd has never owned the rights to this film and has many times said that they're not pleased with sound.
@BjornRiis Oh, so that's how it is. Thanks for letting me know. Oh and by the way, the thing about this solo that isn't like in the video is in the beginning of the solo, when you go to the 19th fret and bend, when you bend down again Gilmour plays a note that sounds nothing like where his fingers are. And no one seems to be able to do this, do you know what he's doing? If this is too poorly explained I can tell you the exact tones tomorrow.
I don't know why people gave you a thumbs down. You're totally right. Very well played (which on youtube is rare in itself), but there are some minor differences from the actual Pompeii version. The camera angle is the same in the film, so it's not too hard to compare them (as well as my ears).
My first comment didn't do justice. You are a legend! I forgot to mention how invaluable your information has been in finding the right pedals for me, aswell as saving my cash:) Legend.
Wow (and maybe oops), I just realised who you are man! I visit your site daily. I got a classic 50's mim black start with 8 screw black pickguard just recently after reading your gear guide. It's my first maple fretboard in nearly twenty years playing. I'm thinking it would be a good a time as any to quit my job and justify my first ever strat. Brother I forgive your choice of shirt and thank you. You made the best site ever on the net. Never again shall I settle for bass duty.
Awesome man!!! You can play for sure man. I love your whammie bar technique (I haven't even got a spring for mine so very envious right now) ha ha but dude!?! what a shocking shirt!? Just kidding man, seriously though, what do we all do once me nail all his solos? High five pompeii guy...
The best I've seen. Whoever mentioned re-doing it with this effect and that effect.....post your own effort and then you might be in a position to comment.
Can You tell me where Gilmour does this mistake ? At what time in the "Echoes part 1" track from Pompeii ? Or in the movie ? What time is it ? Thanx ;)
Excellent work on the solo! This is spot-on from the Pompeii DVD and glad your uploaded it. Thanks for your web site as it's the best one for David Gilmour effects, settings, etc.
5 stjerner herfra! Way to go brother! :)
I just wanted to thank you for posting your videos. I enjoy watching them. They are simply amazing. It seems so easy to play like Mr. Gilmour does, but it is not. You are a great guitar player. Would you try to play "Marooned" some day for each and every Pink Floyd fan of us? I think that it would be a great experience, not only for you, but for us too. Have you ever thought about it? Do you agree guys? Greetings from Mexico, City.
Bjorn, love the videos and especially your website, I have learned so much from you! I have seen some tab for this solo and they suggest a different tuning (half step up, I believe). Are you using the standard tuning? Take care!
i have an analogman sunface BC108 and a EH deluxe memory man on order, would i be able to pull off a decent version of echoes with just those pedals or would you recommend me getting something else? also, what settings are you using for those pedals? it sounds awsome man!! deadly strap BTW.
Depends on your amp and pickups. The Sunface, or any fuzz, can be a bit thin and harsh alone. To get that smooth early Gilmour tone you'll need a powerful amp that can boost the pedal and it also helps adding a booster, like a Tube Driver or Colorsound Powerboost after the Sunface.
Takk!
Tone is right on the money man. Your website is great too. Have you ever played with a " tone Bone British rock tube distortion peddle"? Do you get this tone from a big muff?
whats up bjorn love your website and your playing, have you tried the analogman modded tubescreamers? if you have what can you tell me about them, are they worth it etc.. thanks
man this are the best pink floyd guitar covers I ever seen. BTW how does the bridge pickup sound? im looking for some pickups for my 1978 strat:D so do you think these things will shine in a 1978 strat? thanks for the cover^^
i wonder if you started the whammy bar on the second bend - lot of ppl are doing it - doesn't sound bad

i have an analogman sunface BC108 and a EH deluxe memory man on order, would i be able to pull off a decent version of echoes with just those pedals or would you recommend me getting something else? also, what settings are you using for those pedals? it sounds awsome man!! deadly strap BTW.

Hei! Kjempebra cover! :)
Cydonia170 3 years ago
Takk!

Tone is right on the money man. Your website is great too. Have you ever played with a " tone Bone British rock tube distortion peddle"? Do you get this tone from a big muff?

Thanks foryour kind words! Never tried the pedal... On the clip I'm using a green Sovtek Big Muff.

man this are the best pink floyd guitar covers I ever seen. BTW how does the bridge pickup sound? im looking for some pickups for my 1978 strat:D so do you think these things will shine in a 1978 strat? thanks for the cover^^

Thanks! Fender Custom Shop 69 will sound very nice on a 78 Strat I think.

Terrific. I play a version of this, but I play it with delay, reverb, and fuzz.

Well yes... Jimi had several of these in different colours. David got his from his wife Polly in 2006. She bought it at an auction.
