Depends, what guitar are you using?

The select button is really hard to find on the x-plorer or whatever its called, and nearly impossible to hit without looking down. On the Les Paul (what Danny is using) the select is easier to reach and probably works a lot more than the x-plorer's select.

Hangthomas, those are called hammer-ons and pull-offs if your wondering, they are notes where you only have to strum once and can hit the colored buttons precise, pretty much like a real guitar, take buckethead for example.

Those notes with white centers are called hammer-ons (or pull-offs. Kind of hard to explain, but hammer-ons suffice for a name). You can hit hammer-ons without strumming, assuming you hit the note before it. If you have any Guitar Hero game, it'll tell you about them in the tutorials.
