The capacitor is a great idea. You can buy about 100 micro switches on ebay for $10 plus shipping, or I don't know if you have 99 cent only stores where you are but they sell a little 99 cent FM scan radio that has two micro switches and a lot of other useful parts inside of it.
The world does NOT run on US currency - I'll make it simple for you - 150 of our dollars is about 20 of yours. Try to remember that everything in the caribbean that is technology hardware has to be imported, and that adds to the cost - if you can get it for 5 dollars, I am happy for you - go to it.
Coffee thing? The only thing that is next to the LED is a tantalum capacitor - you can get them at Radio Shack if you are in North America, or just hunt round electronics parts places. You can also use other capacitors, but they are physically bigger, so they are not as convenient. Tantalum capacitors are also more accurate (not really a factor here) and also more expensive.

$150...Really. What made it so expensive?
Jontheking100 2 years ago
Trinidad currency, not USD. USD you're looking at around 10 bucks.

If you separate the circuit with the LED using a switch and add a spring, you'll have a pen that activates when you press.
JackOfSpades93 2 years ago
can you tell me the specifications of the led you use?
abrchubo 3 years ago
OH! My bad. Not US dollars-- TT. So about $5 USD a pen. Sorry guys. Nice job.
Dome6656 3 years ago
Nicely done... But $150 for 2 pens!?!?
I did more or less the same thing with dry erase pens but no capacitor and powered it with watch/calculator batteries--about $20 for 4 pens.
Dome6656 3 years ago
My base model is $5.50 shipped, on ebay. Select a pen from user shakespeare1212.

Great job, I've been doing a lot of research, I was wondering, should I get a capacitor just for safe measure?

Thats $150 TT (Trinidad and Tobago dollars). The exchange rate is roughly $6.3 TT to 1 US dollar which works out to about $24 US

I just built mine like an hour ago, the total cost for $9.36
deathsyth09 3 years ago
Multiply that by 2 for for two pens, and you come up with almost the same price that we paid.

Video quality is decent. Might want to put the presentation itself up on scribd, or similar site.
