They are also older and mellow now, they can't always be 'the party band'. Sorry guys, people change, and for artists of ANY KIND their medium also changed. Get the hell over it.
Ben came from The Roots, so he can play just as well as Dirk, and for the record the rumors of musical difference and tension between him and other band members simply is not true. He left the band to settle down and be away from touring.
in defense of brandon, he doesn't scream anymore not because he won't but because he can't. if you actually knew anything about vocals, you'd understand that.
also, yes, ben and dirk have completely different styles. build a goddamn bridge and get the fuck over it. keep in mind that when he joined, they never once pressured him to learn anything before make yourself. regardless of anything you feel towards either of them, you have to give ben the credit for trying. he does a damn good job.
Im a mad incubus fan and no offence, its great hearing these songs live but im sure they are sick to death of playing them. They've evolved, get over it. rant over.
It's just sad that after Ben left, i havent been able to listen to a full CD without skipping through tracks. I mean for all the stoner/mushroom-lsd heads, we appreciate Fungus Amongus/Enjoy incubus; rather, any incubus fan appreciates every and all albums one way or another. S.C.I.E.N.C.E is great, but the band doesnt care for it, they only played Vitamin at Detroit this year. Brandon and the band think the shit they made when they were 17-18 is foolish. Its sad but true. but i agree w/pluss
@dirk311s Agree with you dude. I like ben and appreciate what he's done, but Dirk was wayyyy better. SCIENCE is sick. and you're right... they don't embrace their older stuff. There's a video on here where brandon and mike are signing autographs before their live HQ performance and Brandon asks mike if he wanted to play SCIENCE and mike absolutely hated the idea, even the thought of it. They should realize that those pre-Morning View albums allowed them to progress and made em who they are now
@Boshunz "There's a video on here where brandon and mike are signing autographs before their live HQ performance and Brandon asks mike if he wanted to play SCIENCE and mike absolutely hated the idea"
and in "11am" segment, Dirk seems to navigate the band to what to play what in song, the "Chugging" part. In all honesty, I probably think the band got sick of the power hungriness of Dirk, although he is an amazing and talented bass player.Trust me, i know, my youtube account name is made after him. But ben is great as well. The music of incubus has grown, in a sadly manner for most 2001 and below fans. But theres nothing to do but appreciate the good tracks they come out w/ the not so great
i love incubus, have loved them since i heard make yourself when it released. i was only 10... The debate goes no where, no matter what fans say. You can have your pro's and cons with both musicians (Alex/Ben). With that said: Yes, a lot of the greats that people appreciate were composed when Alex (Dirk) was in the band. If you watch the Morning View Sessions DVD, you can see in "Dirk's Zen" that when he plays the acoustic guitar, he originated the verse/chorus of "have you ever" (continued)
Most of the people who think Dirk is more "talented" aren't musicians to begin with or they would understand all the intangibles Ben Kenny has brought to incubus. I love this old metal progressive shit, but they needed to evolve and not stay in 1997. Each Incubus album that was released seemed better musically than the last.
DIrk did two thing well. Slap and lay solid bass lines. Ben can do both those and then some. Hell, he can even play guitar or fill in on Drums if Jose was sick for a show, I bet. Easily the most talented musician in the entire band. They wrote "Dig" with Ben on the drums and he showed Jose the beat later And you guys are comparing him to the one trick "stuck in the 90" metal progressive bassist in Dirk. They were having differences on song writing and that's when he had to go.
@nicoesco First of all incubus flows waaaay better than ever before with Ben. And they mutually decided to have dirk out for a reason so id trust the bands decision. And Ben adds a lot of creative and spiritual energy to the band. And a crow left of the murder was my personal favorite album.
Sick Sad Little World from the look alive DVD is some amazing melodic bass playing. Ben can be melodic, aggressive and his groove is amazing. Dirk was aggresive and funk oriented, he was never melodic what so ever. Also, again Mike wrote all his basslines as Dirk couldn't be bothered writing his own.
Dirk is a much more talented and creative bassist than Ben? No way!....1. Dirk wouldnt write his own basslines, Mike them. 2. Dirk was told to leave because he refused to play different styles. 3. Drums, Guitar, Bass and Lyrics are all plain on the new album as thats what they were aiming for. 4. Watch ben playing stellar at red rocks, he totally makes it his own. 5. Ben adds amazing backing vocals also,
it's literally so funny how people think ben came in and called all the shots. Ben +1
people that are complaing about dirk and ben just be happy that even when incubus was having creative differences with dirk they actually found a new bassist and are still around to day creating wonderful music and its not like they dont acknowledge their old songs and sounds take this video for example i mean incubus is and always will be incubus
Dirk is so much more talented and creative then Ben kenney ever was in incubus songs. Ben kenney is an amazing musician and could probably play guitar and sing better than lance but Dirk is and always will be the more talented bassist. Stop saying they evolved. Have you heard kenneys bass lines on the newest album? Very plain.
@plus44fanatics They were simple, not plain. You don't always have to have some bass solo running through the song. His Bass lines off the new album fit what Mike is writing on the guitar and piano and they're also MELODIC. Somethhing Dirk knew nothing about. Look, if DIrk was so great then why was he ditched? He's a one trick pony. He can slap and make EVERYTHING sound overly progressive. Incubus ain't interested in making fucking S.C.I.E.N.C.E all over again. They've been there done that.
@iiiINSULT2INJURYiii call it what you want but they without a doubt lost something when Dirk left. Brandon doesn't scream when they play their old songs where they involve actual energy, which Ben would know nothing about. If you want to talk about talent and why Dirk was "Ditched", it's because they changed their style and Dirk didn't want to. there was no ditching involved. Dirk was way more creative and it took me hours to master his lines where Kenneys took me maybe 10 minutes. Dirk>Ben.
@plus44fanatics Yeah, they lost the art of being a young Immature band and finally grew out of that metal progressive style that was going on around late 90's early 2000's. There is real substance to there songs now. They don't remind me of Faith No More mixed with Red Hot Chili Peppers anymore. They have their own style now that seems refreshed and catchy. And they didn't really change their style. They grew up and Dirk didn't know how to so they got a more well rounded musician with Ben.
@plus44fanatics Took you hours to learn what songs? LOL Ben Kenney's shit is more involved, it' just fly's by much faster than what Dirk does. Learn "A Crow Left of the Murder" Bridge bass solo and tell me that is easy. or try "Look Alive" I find Dirk's stuff much more easier to play. And also, about Brandon's screaming which you prolly know nothing about singing.. Of course he doesn't scream that shit anymore. he's 23 no more, and closing in on 40. Science was a "Just a Phase".
@iiiINSULT2INJURYiiiAnd honestly, anyone who says Ben is not as talented as Dirk is just being spiteful because they like Dirk more and refuse to get over 1999. Ben can play the Bass, Drums, Guitar, Write, sing front, sing back up. There's not much the guy can't do. Now, that's called talent.
@iiiINSULT2INJURYiii haha wow dude, you've been brainwashed or something. Look Alive isn't difficult its just really fast paced at some parts. it really isn't that hard and if you actually played bass guitar you would know that. so Ben has a few difficult songs, would you like me to delve into Dirk's list? Medium, Redefine, New Skin, Certain shade of green, basically anything from fungus or Science for that matter because it is way more creative than anything Ben has ever made with the band.
@plus44fanatics I disagree. Those early songs aren't hard for me. That's shit I was learning when I was 16. I like their first couple albums, but if you're really a musician, that's not something you really wanna practice too. Incubus didn't have an identity at that point and Dirk was a big problem with where they wanted the music to go. Brandon didn't wanna make obscure progressive space songs. He wanted to sing more, less shouting.. someone who could sing back up. Dirk was holding them back!
the speed to maintain every note hit perfect at "Look Alive" speed is not completely easy. I wasn't saying it's impossible, but there's a few tricky parts with the timing..
@plus44fanatics I'm as big of a dirk fan as you, but at the same time I really appreciate what ben can do so I'm going to play devil advocate and list reasons why ben is better than dirk. 1)Ben can sing. He harmonizes with brandon so well and it really takes the singing to another level. 2) ben can jam and improvise. incubus never really jammed much at shows with dirk. They do it all the time now. 3)Ben actually writes his own lines. Mike has said that he wrote a lot of dirks bass lines.
@iheartmushrooms84 i disagree, the singing on the earlier albums(before Ben) were both creative and passionate especially live. Now they're sort of plain and reoccuring. i think your 3rd reason was a rumor possibly blown out of proportion or something along those lines. i find it very difficult to believe that Dirk would just refuse to write his own basslines anymore. again, i think it was just another "reason" why Dirk was "kicked" out of the band. Just saying.
@plus44fanatics They have evolved, though. Ok, DIrk is more "talented"? Define talented, please? Ben Kenney ca do EVERYTHING. Especially on the bass. Have you even heard Incubus play live? He is way more diverse can do more tricks than Dirk. Without Ben they wouldn't be the band they are. Ben Kenney's bass lines are very clever and and fit on the new album.. Look, you're not gonna hear slap bass on Promises Promises, dude. LOL Or any other moody song on the new album.
If Dirk was more creative he would still be in the band. The band finally chose to "grow up" and write organic sounding music that's vibrant and moody. Dirk Lance wouldn't even "fit" in this band. Brandon doesn't wanna scream anymore and ruin his voice. They are a much more complete band with Ben Kenney. The back up vocals alone are a big seller on getting a job in any band. singing harmonies and playing bass at the same time isn't the easiest thing. Dirk Lance can't do it.
@iiiINSULT2INJURYiii OH PLEASE. save me "their a more complete band with Ben" shit. their vibrant and moody? if vibrant and moody translates to simple and lacking emotion, then yeah you're right. Do they even need Chris anymore? cause they've completely abandoned their turntables. hes more of a part time pianist if you ask me. now they all wear matching white clothing in their videos and their live performances are sloppy and boring. sorry but its the truth. say what you want but they lost it.
@plus44fanatics got the admite your right about Killmore i liked him when he did some work son But i mean Thy're leanign into a whole new direction of Music i hope they just don't end bad. I think its time for them to complete the circle and Touch on one of the older styles maybe have a relavent cousin to sound of science or something. I just need their strong songs more.
@aaronc391 im not angry about their new direction. i even liked light grenades and wasn't completely opposed to that direction. but they completely changed from that album too and all of a sudden became really soft and worst of all.. poppy. the whole reason why this band was so good was because Dirk made it so mike could do his own trippy thing on guitar, but that facet has completely disappeared. listen, i'll always love this band no matter what they do but too much change can be a bad thing.
@plus44fanatics agreed i mean DIrk left though because he was ready to settle down for a while. or so go the rumors but i mean he wasn't active in the music scene, he was in cali. doing sound for video games I think that If they can touch base on the next album of more power more energy and creativity it will probably become a More thought out SCIENCE. or somethign new and Trendy.
@iiiINSULT2INJURYiii btw at least Dirk stuck with his roots. go listen to his other band. he didn't sell out. he still creates outstanding bass lines with a makeshift band. Im quite positive Dirk wasn't kicked out of the band. it was mutual. who was Ben before incubus so kindly let him into the band? Dirk started Incubus with the others while ben rode the coattails of their success and brought them down in the end. bens a great bass player, just not for this band.
Ben is a FAR better musician than Dirk, plain and simple.. an the guy actually sings! Bonus luxury. That's why he's in the band. Oh and he plays the bass with melody and grace and does it better than anybody around. I'm sure he could slap if he wanted too, but what he's doing with the thump of the pick sounds fine. With out Ben Kenney Incubus wouldn't have evolved the the way they have; specially with his singing ability that he brings.
@agustingarciap he wasn't talkin about the notes mate, ben's playing the same bass line as dirk but the sound of dirk's bass is different from ben's. you may have already known that, but just to clear things up :)
In six nights of these HQ shows, this is the only S.C.I.E.N.C.E song they played. (Granted, 3 of the 6 nights they played entire albums, front to back, but still). These HQ shows really made me fall deeply in love with Incubus again, and the songs I'm not a big fan of on INNW are better live... such an awesome band - glad they're back in full effect!
Let it be known I was the 2nd ever person to click the 'like' button on this video. Because in 10 years time, when Incubus have gracefully retired, all the boppers of today will be gutted they never had a chance to see these guys play live.
I love all incubus songs and members past and present they all added to the great legacy that is the band FTW wahooooooo!!!

@agustingarciap he wasn't talkin about the notes mate, ben's playing the same bass line as dirk but the sound of dirk's bass is different from ben's. you may have already known that, but just to clear things up :)

@mindinspace13 trying to be diplomatic by using a smiley at the end of your I-know-more-about-bass-than you-do post is a fail.

@mindinspace13 the different sound/ feel is not because of the bass, its because Ben is using a pick instead of playing fingerstyle

It's not the same without Dirk's fat bass tones

In six nights of these HQ shows, this is the only S.C.I.E.N.C.E song they played. (Granted, 3 of the 6 nights they played entire albums, front to back, but still). These HQ shows really made me fall deeply in love with Incubus again, and the songs I'm not a big fan of on INNW are better live... such an awesome band - glad they're back in full effect!

Let it be known I was the 2nd ever person to click the 'like' button on this video. Because in 10 years time, when Incubus have gracefully retired, all the boppers of today will be gutted they never had a chance to see these guys play live.
