The best way to eliminate leaks is the install the furnace and ducts correctly from the get go. If you have a qualified contractor do the work there will be no air leaks. I have not carried smack tape on my truck for years. The only time I will use tape if I am insulating an attic job. I think they should require a license to purchase smack tape, the would weed out a lot of the hacks out there.
@mufichman True enough, but you're not the only one out there installing duct work. Most people have no pride in their work, and cut every corner possible.
Looks like that 5 inch leek was caused by an air conditioner coil retrofitted to the furnace with the taper not being properly connected to the existing but modified plenum. Foil tape is a tool for hacks.
just repeat this process every 1 to 7 years...the average lifespan of tape . For a better sealing job which you will never need to do again , apply mastic ,cover the tape liberally and be sure to have some clothes on that you do not care about ...it could get messy . Start where the pressure in a system is greatest ...the unit than work your way out....
