  • The man was on ibogaine.

  • Nixon, on claiming victory in 1968, called Hubert Humphrey "a dedicated patriot, a decent and honourable man," Ed Muskie warranted the same evaluation as his top of the ticket. Brains, character, commitment. Lacked the mongrel streak as we say in Australia - considering the paranoia and poison of the Nixon era, it would definitely have been better (probably much, much better) had the man from Maine been elected. Mr Muskie was indisputably one of the great Secretaries of State in US history.

  • Ed Muskie was a good man but not a good Presidential Campaigner

  • MUSKIE: (campaigning in Wisconsin): He talked like a farmer with terminal cancer trying to borrow money on next year's crop."

  • Hey, thanks for putting this up. But I'm fairly sure that this is from the 1968 campaign, when he ran on Humphrey's ticket. As a long-time Maine resident myself, I am pleased that Russians have taken an interest in the guy!

  • Fascist. Pig. Enivorment does not exist, and all he did was lower MPG on vehicles because of stupid ass emission "laws" all of which were Unconstituional..

  • should of been a Muskie-Shriver ticket.

  • First of all, if I was an American I would vote for the democratic party.

Elections are won by the votes of the moderate people, not by the votes of the extreme progressives or extreme conservatives. McGov was too left, too progressive for moderate voters, so he lost from crook Nixon big time.

No doubt that mcgov is a very decent honest man, but this does not make a person the best candidate for president, I fear.

  • @AndreasAntoniusMaria I wish people were more extreme.

  • The Dems where so stupid to choose mc govern as a presidential candidate. So they lost big time!

  • Choosing McGov for the nom wasn't a stupid move. Letting McGov pick Tom Eagleton, a very bright but troubled young man who's history of alcoholism, mental illness and electroshock therapy treatments should have automatically disqualified him for higher office, that was the stupid move. Worst choice of running mate by a major party nominee until Sarah Palin, easily.

That said, Muskie, with his executive experience as a two-term Governor of Maine, would have been the stronger candidate in 72.
