American health care system is very opaque to economic analysis because of the high amount of subsidies and regulation all around. Competition is available in only a few areas. There has actually been an effort to keep hospital services from "duplicating" within defined regions, because of high cost of resources. This all points to the need for a national health system.

The reason we are seeing this debt resulting in insolvent Medicare is because the money that is being put into it is being used up 3x more. The debt is coming from citizens consuming health care beyond our means along with double counting from the Obama admin. by taking money, specifically for Medicade, and dumping it into Medicare. This plan gets rid of regulations and clears up an unnecessarily opaque structure.

Flawless presentation ! Prior to this clip, I thought congressman Ryan had one flaw during presentation. Regarding flaw, I am talking about Congress Ryan's rapid speech style: He just talks too fast. It's a seductive argument from Ryan until you investigate WHY Medicare trajectory is through the roof. It's all because of health care costs rising in general, and it's not the other way around. Do most people realize that Medicare has (until the 2008 recession) been met by payroll taxes, not digging into progressive income taxes? If we kept costs down we would not be having this discussion.

Spending $500 Billion on the new health law WILL HELP KEEP COSTS DOWN. In the US, we have consistently BSed about "rationing" so that we can pay for new med technology, at the expense of serving the health needs fairly & completely. The new law spreads the wealth and caps costs when the finally let it complete itself.

@prunar As a licensed health insurance broker, I know the reform law back & forth. It WILL NOT offer affordable insurance to anyone. There is virually NO cost containment features in the law. The whole thing is focused on accessibility to healthcare for everyone. Fine, that's great, but if insurance is too expensive for anyone to purchase what's the point of giving them access to an unobtainable product? It's unworkable in todays system and that's why states & company's are applying for waivers.

They ration according to triage, and not simply by denying an expensive treatment outright, hoping you die before you can appeal. Among the elderly that may mean not using hugely expensive new technologies (the GOP calls this Death Panel when carried out by a public entity). GOP was also behind banning US buying drugs as a single entity to save $. Don't you know US pays twice what other countries pay? We have to ration, question is HOW?

@prunar See but under the House Plan, we break up corporate health care monopolies, which in this case is a government run monopoly of 15 undisputed bureaucrats--choosing our health care FOR US mind you. The GOP plan breaks this up by encouraging other firms to enter the market. Basic economics shows that competition drives prices down. In the case of health care, we will actually see some business' emerging and specializing in certain areas. This plan is EXACTLY how we ration.

@donde2k For those here who do not know, the WAIVERS are limits on total dispersals which may not top out at LESS THAN $750,000, and since it is an INTERIM MEASURE, it becomes moot after 2014. Another red herring from the party of voucher vultures, the GOP.

@prunar Yes, the waivers are temporary until 2014, but if the new law is so wonderful and lowers the cost of health care for everyone while giving access to insurance to anyone... why are waivers wanted or needed?? Why are over half the states in this country in court trying to have the law deemed unconstitutional? @spkngrmn The new law phases out exclusions and limits, so it will make those who don't get insurance thru work or are too sick to work eligible for insurance even if they have pre-existing conditions. What good is insurance that is available only to healthy people? It brings in younger, healthier people to even out the groups, so that high risk pools don't exist to punish people for being ill. If "free market" health care worked to provide for everybody other countries would be doing it too.

Health care has a supply and demand problem. Shortages created by our own government regulations(fewer drugs, doctors/nurses and hospitals) are forcing prices to go up. This is great for the people on the supply side but bad for consumers on the demand side.
