  • @Rage00Against They were in Winnipeg in 2010...hope you went!

  • @headingleyrocks I did go! I wouldn't have missed it for the world man. Now I moved out to Calgary, and hoping they come here. They usually skipped winnipeg, went down to chicago and came back up to Saskatchewan, so I have more of a chance for them to come here now!! I still have yet to see APC live though :(

  • @Rage00Against I am going to see them on Jan25 in Toronto, I want to bring a small camera with video capabilities. Have they loosened up about this yet? Do I need to hide it? What sort of search do they conduct before you get in? Is it anything like an airport search...your bags and body (arms stretched out and searched with a wand)? My first TOOL concert!!

  • @headingleyrocks keister stash that shit lol. ive Never been to a tool concert, but the shows i have been too they dont do it very thoroughly.

  • @dasmushroomcult Thanks!

  • @headingleyrocks If you're a girl, hide the camera in your purse, if not bring a chick who has a purse. They won't look through things thoroughly but if they find a recording camera they might take it away or not let you in. Tool is a hardass when it comes to their show being filmed. They strictly forbid it. I wasn't even allowed to take pics with my camera phone. I took a few but I was told to stop and put it away.

  • @Rage00Against Thanks =)

  • While I understand where he is coming from, I must say that I VERY HEAVILY disagree with him. I must agree with alnewberry; seeing a live performance online or on TV actually makes me WANT to go see them. Oh well, at least now I know why they don't have proshot videos...well except for that one of them performing Sober back in '93.

  • Hes such a ffucking douche

  • Nah I ain't sayin she a gold digga, but she ain't messin wit no broke nigga

  • hopefully i'll be able to feel that bigger energy in february!

  • Then why Salival?

  • This is funny because I used to be a real big Tool fan until I saw them live. Maynard sat by the drums the whole concert. No interaction with the crowd at all. The sound was really good. Come to think of it it was like sitting at my house listening to a Tool Album with 20,000 people.

  • With all these *^#^% holding their phone's above their heads to shoot video, it has become an UN-needed hassle blocking our view. With WI-FI they even cast it live. The G.Dead gave fans a corralled photo area. Europeans recorded concerts that would end up being sold in record stores by next day. I just went to see Orchestral Movers in the Dark, they record show & flash onto USB to sell when you leave. What happened to when you feared bringing in a camera for a memento shot. Camera OK but no J's?

  • Well I guess I shouldn't buy any of their albums then, since the sound will be lacking live without the production.

  • @Conflikt420 There are people that only go to live shows and don't buy studio music. Not a new concept.

  • Hold up Kanye, I'ma let you finish. . .BUT MAYNARD HAS ONE OF THE BEST VOCALS OF ALL TIME!!!

  • What an idiotic argument. Videos of performances make me want to actually go see the band live. Apparently Maynard thinks his fans are such idiots that they think a video is a replacement for a live show.

  • @alnewberry I think he just overthinks everything. He thinks too deep, and he probably does think everyone is an idiot lol

  • @alnewberry Never underestimate idiots...

  • @xxMMxKIDxx How well I know. ;-)

  • @alnewberry One does not simply record a Tool performance. You do not know about that of which you speak.

  • @alnewberry I don't think you got the argument. Almost but not quite.

  • I wish Tool would come to #SWFL so I wouldn't have to get my FIX on a flipping youtube video share ;) <3 bluskyeinmiami (#56627) aka DaniNinFL Member of ToolArmy.com 17 Feb 07

  • If you've been to a Tool show, you don't need a recording to remember it. You will never forget what you saw, heard, and experienced. I've been fortunate enough to see them twice, and no camera could capture the moments as well as being actually present.

  • you cant even hear what hes saying because of the music

  • an opinion is just that. an opinion. hes just sayin whatever comes to his head in an interview that he probably doesnt really wanna do. who gives a fuck? this guy is incredibly smart and talented, doesnt mean hes always right or gonna make everyone happy. believe whatever you want about anything. fuck it!

  • Hey Maynard why not tour more so your fans wouldn't have to rely taped concerts? You know not everyone lives in California or the big shot cities you tour to!!!

  • Wow, that was pretty illogical.

  • and i intend to keep it that way

  • just a troll

  • I agree with him and disagree!

I took 3 min od video in Wienna 2006 and about 2 min in Belgrade, thats just for the memories!

Hey Maynard what do you care?, you just do your part and let the rest of the people waste their money by buying the tickets and filming!

BTW. Here is one inspiration for you and i hope new album of tool!!!! Turn the CNN, FOX and other fucking BULLSHIT channels and lay the words on the top of their head with a 20t of hate!

  • I have to disagree with Maynard on this...anyone who's been to a concert knows they're awesome, when I watch a concert video of a band it makes me want to see them even more.

  • Must see band!! It's not a show it's a transcendental experience.

  • Tool has one of the best concerts I have ever been too

  • seeing iz beliving

    tool bdo gold coast 09

  • I am a fan of Tool and I do agree that being at a show is a unique experience, but not everybody can shell out the exorbitant prices for a concert ticket. Not everyone can go to concerts. Record a concert and let someone who can't afford or who can't othewise attend a concert have a small piece of the experience.

  • Why would I see the band live if I could just see a video on it? Because the experience and energy is totally different, that's why Maynard.

  • 937th comment ftw! Tool live was unlike anything else I've experienced. I would like to see videotaped concerts with clever angles, but nothing else replicates the vibrations, smells, and experience of seeing them live.

  • Yeah sure thing, I really like Tool, APC and Puscifer but c'mon I live half planet away. Don't I deserve to buy a live dvd performance? I'm gonna shit money outta my ass, fly across the planet and watch the concert? Maynard the USA is not the world, you've got fans all over the fucking planet. (This was not a hate comment so don't start bitching over it)

  • u cant film energy.

  • @GEEFLEXZ Exactly but you can record memories and that's why I think people filming shows is a good idea. Tool won't be around forever.

  • @Stinkfist43 actually he has a very valid point, other bands do it cause their sell outs their greedy and want the money

  • this dude is a fucking idiot. simple as that.

  • @TheBobaflex Coming from a Bobaflex fan that's pretty fuckin' funny. This guy is a genius, not everyone will agree with his opinion.

  • @TreverUndeadXpdX I'm not even a fan of the band bobaflex numbnuts, go fuck ya self trev

  • I agree with the first bit he said about the way most live videos are filmed - nearly all of them I've seen are shit. shoddy editing and shots. The most outstanding example of the way a live show SHOULD be filmed is the way the Grateful Dead movie was. The cameramen were all on stage right next to the musicians and truly capturing the magic or out int he crowd filming people dancing and having a great time.

If all live shows put to tape/dvd were captured like that I would be one happy camper.

  • i love tool, their my fav band. ive been to their concert, i try to find tool merchandise when ever i can although that's limited as well, and i have to say if there were videos of tool concerts i would buy them and would still go to their concerts when i could, so i agree with 00roastedlampsot00 and as much as i admire Maynard and consider him a rock god i also disagree with what he said. seeing the concert and watching a video of a concert are 2 diff experiences, both great

  • What about to those places where you have a lot of fans yet you don't go to their place? At least, they get to see you perform live in dvd's or something but too bad they don't have option... Better use their imagination instead. Bummer!

  • Ugh love Maynards music but he's such an undesirable person to be around as it seems. Fuck, now somebodys gonna reply that he'd never hang out with me anyway. NO SHIT!

  • I actually agree, The energy of seeing this band live is not something you can feel through any sort of Reproduction or video. It's an extremely powerful force when you let yourself become vulnerable to the power that is tool.

  • Watching or listening to live music allows me to hear tracks I've listened to alot, as different extended versions with special guests at times, extra drummers (if luck be yours.) A fan knows all their music and how it is composed. A true fan will go to any lengths to even hear them live so they can even have the chance to hear ONE track differently in some way or perhaps modified in some way they want to try out and in the process create something that makes YOUR understanding of them evolve.

  • If the tape is not sold - just passed out for free, etc - than performers should be OK with live shows being recorded.

  • I disagree, I taped some of dope live at the alrosa villa in colombus. ohio...To show the people out there that may have never heard or seen them live, how awesome they are live, I mean my camera sound sucked but you can get the energy they put out, just by watching them perform, thats the beautiful thing about recording video from a fans perspective, I hope he's not saying that in the perspective that he might lose money because someone seen a song of his and it took money out of his pocket!

  • @mooseemall even if he is talking about losing money..shouldnt he be worried about that it is after all his job and pretty much ppl arent buying albums anymore they are simply downloading them..making concerts i believe are what is keeping rock artists from going bankrupt..and no seeing a concert is way different from attending one

  • How many times does he say clever?

  • I HATE kanye-----

  • Wrong.

  • anyone else notice the postal service hat, well if its on maynard its ok

  • I'm so torn between Maynard's view and my own. I agree that it's best to see the band live at that moment, especially a band like Tool, but hell, it doesn't hurt to have a nicely produced DVD for the fans!!!

  • Tool live is an experience all of its own but I would would still buy a live DVD - Maynard don't you want my dirty dollar?

  • completely disagree with maynard

  • anyone who's ever been to a live show understands that it's not as exciting is a live video recording because you're obviously not zoomin around the fucking stage? i dunno but if you ask me this is a ridiculous reason to not record shows

  • Yea I love tool, but the fact that he says this and his stance on downloading music shows how little he actually has his finger on the pulse of what is going on with modern music and art. 1. videos and torrents are the reason that so many new incredable artists have even had a chance to be heard 2. Thankfully there are a few live vids of tool in the 90's so that we can see what it was like when maynard could sing the songs....

  • You see that! You rap fucks ain't shit! (Except the legends like Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop, Ice Cube, etc. They kick ass.) Kanye was shown AFTER they interviewed Tool. Suck on that Kanyack!

  • @buzzardkiller92 The next tool album will have lyrics penned in by snoop dog. including the two HOT singles "Hot Rollin Smokin Bitches & Weed Remix ( DUB dubble dee OG remix [pass the blunt vol.2])" and "I beat my girlfriend vol.9" featuring Marshall "Slim Shady" Mathers with limited appearances by his life-partner Dre, MD.

  • Live videos are a tool to get people to your shows Maynard. Only a tool would not realize that.

  • how did they just go from TOOL to Kanye West? come on!

  • TOOL FUCKING KICKS ASS LIVE

  • why see the band after seeing a video....because TOOL fkn ROCKS

  • I would come to every show but you guys are never in my back yard .. he is right but fuck bring the energy to me ..

  • Ok, but, tour more often please !

  • I also want to say for the record to all these people filming these vids, STOP FUCKING ZOOMING IN ON MAYNARD AND DANNY OR ANY OF THEM!!! The best part of their show is the overall experience. The visuals going along with the music. You're missing the point of the show and you people can never hold a steady zoom anyway. Pisses me off.

  • @Sgurd Your mistaken, what you "heard" (because you obviously haven't seen them live) has nothing to do with him not wanting to be recorded on video. Tool shows have always been about the energy, the experience, the music, and not the band members themselves. And he's spot on about how the videos don't capture the overall experience. I still watch some from time to time but I will NEVER miss a Tool concert because nothing beats actually being there.

  • Takes it a little too seriously it seems. From what I've heard, the last show they played in Vancouver, Maynard sang in the back, barely able to be seen. All because he didn't want to be video recorded.

So because some people can't afford your ridiculous ticket prices, you have to ruin the show for the people that can afford?

  • this is an absolute true story. a friend of mine went to a tool concert like a decade ago and was in the crowd video taping of the band as they played. about half way through the concert maynard himself shined a laser pointer on him and security came through the crowd and kicked him out of the show. so yea... maynard takes that seriously lol

  • this is retarded. just put on a good show every time so people dont see bad videos of it.

  • I disagree. What if Jimmi Hendrix was never filmed? Think about it.

  • I dont know what language they were speaking but im pretty sure the lady said "turn the channel now before you have to hear about kanye west.."

  • @TheFeeez21 Best comment ever.

  • @TheFeeez21 lol!

  • A Perfect Circle Tickets with NO jacked-up fees! Only at Ticket Pimp! Find us on Twitter @TicketPimp

  • I have yet to see Tool live, but they are by far my favorite band! I'm glad people were able to shoot videos and put them up on youtube, because it's giving me a far greater appreciation for them after hearing how great they are live. Usually I'm pretty iffy about seeing live music because a lot of musician cant live up to what they do in the studio, but Tool is the opposite and I can't wait to see them!

  • Seeing live video, and knowing the band is... GOOD live, makes me want to see them live more. Disagree Maynard.

  • if i told someone "hey tool's playing in town in a few day wanna come?" and they reply with "naw man ive see them live on youtube" id remove their nipples with a butter knife

  • @DyingFetusSkinless please continue, what would you do to them next?

  • Tool never released a non-bootlegged or non-promotional concert DVD.

  • What about fans that live 6000 miles away from LA and can't afford the thousands of dollars it would cost to see a show live? Maynard you're a douche.

  • @toolhead22 you realize they do tours right?

  • @toolhead22 They perform all over the world. I have to drive 8 hours 2 ways when they tour. Its worth the time and the money. For people in Africa? Well.. they were fucked to begin with so Tool is prolly not at the top of their list.

  • maynard is wrong about this

  • Oh....I just videotaped some of APC last night in Ottawa...guess I won't do that again lol

  • Soooo, if recording a show means less people will come to the shows, what effect does listening to the recorded music have on their shows? By Maynard's logic, releasing CDs should also be detrimental to the fan's enjoyment of their performances.

  • @BassmanSW Then how would people know they even exist.

  • @BassmanSW so by your version of his logic bands should no longer release cds the thing that gets their music out to the public real smart smart ass, he has a valid point in saying that recording shows would narrow the demographic of people willing to pay to go see them live but if they dont release cd's how the fuck is their music supposed to get out?? think the entire scenario out before placing ones input.

  • @BassmanSW Well that's just awful logic. He's talking about the experience of a live performance being taken away by watching a video recording of alive performance. Studio recordings are not the same as their live performances. How does listening to a studio version affect the fan's enjoyment of Tool's live performances?

  • i see where he's coming from but i think he has it totally wrong... every tool video i watch just makes want to go see them live even more!

  • Yet tool releases concert dvds. Maynard's clever at acting. He'd make a great used car salesman :)

  • I like his USPS hat

  • "and I get less money."

what about the people who want to look back on the concerts they attended?

  • "and I get less money."

  • He's right, today's concert filming is to put 38 cameras around the venue and for two hours cut from one camera to the next every 1.5 seconds. I hate that shit. HDNet does this and ruins every goddamn show.

  • Fuck that cunt kanye west at the end. Fuck him. I would be overjoyed if he died today, tomorrow, or anytime very soon. Not because he's black, but because he's a retarded jackass. He does everything incorrectly. It's all attitude. His attitude makes him a great candidate to be tortured and murdered. Maynard on the other hand, is fucking awesome.

  • @FUCKYOUIAMOVER18 they both act the same what the fuck are you talking about lol. The whole "I'm not racist but..." thing screams insecurities.

  • @TheMadChilidogger ur honestly saying kanye is the same as maynard?? a pop plastic untalented money whore versus a real musician?? sorry but simply because kanye is black doesnt mean we cant criticize him lil wayne and that thing niki minaj are the things that maynard is referring as the music industry collapse..

  • No he's right. They shouldn't film live because then what's the point of paying to see a band if you can just look on youtube. Its taking away from the fan and

  • we don´t know cause you`ve never came to sudamerica!!!!...come on!!!!!....what are u waiting for!!!!!?

  • As it happens, I disagree with absolutely everything he just said.

  • @00roastedlampost00 Me to, i think maynard can really go over the top sometimes

  • @00roastedlampost00 likewise.

Anyone who has ever been to a concert and watched a video of one knows that they are nowhere near comparable.

All a video of a concert does is let someone who was there relive the moment or let someone who wants to be there see how the band performs. When I watch a concert DVD, I feel so pumped up and start longing and wishing that I was at that concert.

Also, not all of us can go see the best band in the world =\

  • @00roastedlampost00 So you would rather watch a video of a concert than go to the actual concert?

  • @HeavyMetalMushrooms No, but like any music fan I am limited somewhat as to concerts I can actually attend; it goes without saying, particularly regarding the kind of band that tours every 7 or 8 years or so.

Sure I don't hold the same views as Maynard on this subject - fine - but the problem lies in the fact that these views actually alienate those same fans, and demonstrate little to no appreciation of the obvious fact that everyone here would love to see the band live and can't.

  • @00roastedlampost00 I hadn't thought about it like that. Not many good band come to where i live, so whenever i get the chance to go to a live show i do.

  • @HeavyMetalMushrooms Besides that, what he said about concert footage doesn't wash at all. Music and film are both art forms in their own right; great music and a beautifully put-together video compliment each other to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

  • @HeavyMetalMushrooms Cont. Sure, the live concert experience is a completely different kettle of fish - any mug could tell you that. But how many people managed to secure tickets to Stop Making Sense, or Cream at the Royal Albert Hall? The film is for the enduring benefit of all those that couldn't.

  • @00roastedlampost00 although i understand what maynard means, I have a live dvd of tool, and i've seen them play live twice, once i even drove 12 hours to see them. The dvd really doesnt do a justice on their live performance.

  • @00roastedlampost00 Glad to see at least one other person who can think for himself. You're one of the few who doesn't eat all of the shit that comes out of this man's mouth as if he were the Second fucking Coming. I can't tell you how many times I've run into some little shit who has ingested so much of Maynard's jizz, he couldn't have an original thought if his pathetic life depended on it. You say one thing that runs counter to Reverend Maynard here, and you're the scum of the earth.

  • @billbenblue *herself.

  • Came***

  • God bless the video stopped before that asshole cane on!!!

  • Please never again defile musical genius like Tool by even showing the face of a talentless clown like kanye west next to them. Thank you.

  • @Tikayyan Nice : )

  • nobody truly gives a shit about anything he does except his singing and lyrics. he needs to shut the fuck up.

  • @gleader big man.... biig man.

  • come to Argentina and we do not see the videos :/

  • Look at hos old videos, see why he says that? But yeah, and what about those of us who can't afford to go to concerts? I used to party with Maynard and can't even afford one of his shows now!

  • cool stuff,

but dudes, have you heard about this new Phenom!!! LizZard?

seriously this is some stuff to be follow and enjoy like a new addiction in the ROCK/METAL world

something from the same planet where come from TOOL i think

    search

    LizZard The Orbither

    and ..woaw..

  • There are people that simply cannot go.

People with advanced ALS is one good example.

However, I highly doubt he was talking about that. He is just talking about the entire experience. The professional camera cuts and angles DO make it seem contrived and takes away from the experience.

So I can see both sides and I am sure he can too, considering what went down with his mother and all. Don't forget about that.

  • so then come to fuckin portugal, since i cant buy any live stuff!!

  • well that explains why the name of the band is "tool". let's start here. i hear a band is playing at a place i like, but i've never heard of them. first place i go is youtube. half of the time i find them there and if i like em enough i'll go and see em. videotaping concerts is a research tool for other people to become fans.

  • jackass. i love the guy, and i'd really like to see him live. but you can't expect everyone to have the means to come kiss your ass. even if it is sugary.

  • I didn't hear a fucking thing he just said...was totally mesmerized with his mouth

  • I dont really care how he feels bout fans taking vid.. I pay to see u.. And I if I wanna bring my cam and get some vid for the hell of it then I will.. TOOL rocks hands down best band ever but you cant stop the fans!!!

  • @MIZZTOOL You're an IDIOT! Seeing TOOL is a spriritually awakening experience and if you can't respect the artists by not taping then it SHOWS you have ZERO respect for them or their music. Regardless if you paid to go or not, its THEIR material and should be RESPECTED as THEY see fit. If you were a TRUE TOOL FAN you wouldn't disrespect them like that.

  • Seen tool live and i would still go to any future concerts but i would like some concert dvds to watch at home when they are not around

  • Hm, I don't think I heard him make any reference to fan recordings. To me it sounded like he was focusing on organized, large scale recordings.

  • I disagree. I've actually gotten into many bands by watching their shows on dvd. As a result I've seen them all live. That's kind of like saying you have the songs on record, so why go pay to see them live. Live music is still alive and people will go to shows regardless of the artist's taped performance. As far as people video taping on their cell phones or whatever, I think that's stupid. But I do agree that you should always see an artist live. It's a whole different art.

  • PSH. I've seen the live videos, they are shit. The person recording is usually shaky, or you can hear them yelling, or something. But it's normally horrible quality.

LUCKILY, This July I'll be getting tickets to see A Perfect Circle. Just a few rows from the stage.

    Fuck Yes. :]

  • fuck kanye west dumb mother fucker can eat my cold shit

  • I think that is good for tool. Tool uses alot of visual art and it would be better just to see them. When it comes to other bands I think they should film it because festivals are expensive as fuck and not everybody can go to them.

  • Love these guys...but they really need to lighten the fuck up. Sick of this pretentious silliness? Get over yourself a-hole & quit pretending it's a bigger deal than it is- Axl Rose

  • i was ready to drop 500-600 bucks to go see a tool concert butt sadly they were sold out

  • I understand his view, but only when it comes to processed, edited shit spewed out by the record labels to market as a DVD. I don't agree with him about random footage captured by fans. There is no way that a "bootleg" is edited in such a way that would make me say: "Hey, you know... I just saw their live show on youtube from the tour 2 nights ago. I don't think i'm going to be buying a ticket for when they're in my neighborhood next month. I'll just get my fill from the bootlegged video on YT"

  • kanye, what a punch in the face

  • This is just about one of the only times I've questioned Maynard. Watching a live Tool bootleg only makes me want to see them 100x more than I already do. I would never ever ever NOT go to a show if they played anywhere remotely close to me. Maybe Maynard doesn't have enough confidence in his fans...?

  • Then release a live DVD already you dick hole! We've been waiting like, what? Twenty something years. You sit a stationary camera sitting at your balls, I will fucking buy it just to hear some good quality live Tool AND I will come and see you live. How about that?

  • As for any other excuse, your limitations are only self-imposed.

  • If Tool doesn't play around where you live and you enjoy their music enough to pay any price, go fly your asses to where they are playing.

  • I'm sorry maynard, imma let you finish, but if it wasn't for youtube and bootleg videos I wouldn't be able to see one of the greatest bands of all times.. ALL TIMES!

  • Trust me Maynard, you have nothing to worry about. You're shows are still waaaay more bad ass in person.

  • The reason we, the people, would like for you, Tool, to make a video of your concert, is because YOU DONT COME AROUND OFTEN GODDAMMIT! But I appreciate the response. I figured it would be along those lines. Good argument.

  • Although I fully understand his point of view, I've gotta disagree. I think this is just one of those ways in which Maynard can get a bit pretentious. I can think of dozens of artists off the top of my head that I have seen live, or will pay to see live based on what I've seen of their performance in recordings.

Plus, Tool rarely play around where I live, so unless I'm willing to wait another couple years, I'm not seeing a live performance anytime soon.

  • I understand his point of view but they never fucking play around here so for me a real professional DVD would be nice. The New Meshuggah Alive DVD was done with great quality.

  • jesus, someone needs some editing skills....Kanye is a whiny bitch

  • I love Tool but have always hated this. I agree that there is a COMPLETELY different and indescribable feeling of watching the band perform live rather than on a bootleg video, but I still love watching the bootlegs. If it wasn't for the bootlegs, I wouldn't have known how good they were live, which wouldn't have convinced me to buy a ticket and go to their shows.

  • cool its on norwegian nrk 1 :)

  • I think he's referring more to those professionally filmed Live DvDs. I could never see Tool doing one of those. They just aren't "back-stage" kinda guys.

  • From mother fuckin Wolfmother... To mother fuckin Tool... To... ugh GODAMNIT GAY FISH!!!

  • I never knew maynard was a mailman..

  • tool is the best band i have ever seen live....never a let down!

  • @MsAmytha my body crumbled last time i saw em live, i let loose and the show was an unforgettable tangible experience

  • @MsAmytha They sound better live than studio. Maynards voice bounces off the walls; however far away they may be

  • hey, I'd LOVe and KILL to see you alive ANYTIME..but you never come to south america, how are we going to be part of this experience?

  • One of my goals in life is to see one of Maynard's bands live in concert. Let's just hope I can before he retires from preforming.

  • I think he was more or less just explaining one aspect of the filming of live shows. He obviously knows that not everybody can go and see them live, everybody knows that..for those people who have a legit reason for not being able to, that's plenty okay. But, obviously the filming of a live show is nothing compared to actually seeing the band live, I'm not sure how anyone can disagree with that. Besides, people don't need those clips to discover the band....use the actually music itself..

  • I love maynard, but he completely missed the point of why shows are filmed. What if you are unable to see the band? Yes, he made some obvious points and yes its obviously a different experience, but come on maynard, dont be so short sighted.
